17 weeks and I think I'm losing/lost the baby

Had another thread about midwife not finding the heartbeat and how I'm having a scan tomorrow, but I'm having cramps today in my lower back and down my thighs as if I'm about to come on and really sharp pains in my right hand side. I'm convinced I've lost the baby and my body is starting to catch up. I have tried phoning my midwife I don't think she's working today as no answer, I'm too early to go to the ward. What can I do? Or do I have to just sit tight until tomorrow? Sad

Ring 111 my love and make yourself a cup of tea whilst you’re waiting to get through. Let us know what happens.

OopsImDoingItAgain · 20/03/2022 14:12

I haven't gone to A&E for the headbutt because the pain eased throughout the morning and when I did NHS 111 online questionnaire it advised self care. Just after 12 I started having the cramps and the back pain. I phoned my maternity unit who won't see me before 20 weeks, EPU was shut and NHS online seems to suggest seeking urgent care if you have severe bleeding, extreme pain and faintness. I don't, I have uncomfortable cramps and a sharp pain in right hand side but not what I would describe as extreme. I haven't known what really to do it feels weird to just sit here while this might be happening but from what I gather that's what should actually happen at this stage?

Ring 111, they are likely to suggest a&e. Was it the maternity assesment unit/ward you contacted? I'd keep pestering them on MAU as well. I work in obstetrics/EPAU and we don't scan ladies past 15 weeks, so it's unusual they would refer a 20 weeks/2nd trimester to Early Pregnancy.

JamieNorthlife · 20/03/2022 14:14

Op, call 111 but Im guessing they are going to advise you to go to A&E.

You are worried and in pain, you should go to A&E and get checked. The only issue could be if they don't have access to the EPU scanners on sundays but they usually have gynae/Obs on call anyway.

ChloeHel · 20/03/2022 14:20

OP I’m going to be harsh now…stop making excuses and take yourself to A&E!

You are clearly worried and its something that should be assessed! As PP said, she had the same symptoms and it turned out to be a bladder infection, which would need to be treated! It may very well end up being nothing at all and just a normal pregnancy symptom, but you aren’t hurting anyone by attending and it’ll save your sanity for the next 24 hours.

As a healthcare professional I am urging you to get yourself looked at. You don’t need to worry that your symptoms may not be “extreme” enough to be seen by A&E, that department is there for a reason. Myself and all the other posters have advised 111 or A&E. You came for advice, please do take it :)

EarringsandLipstick · 20/03/2022 14:23

Oh OP, I'm really sorry. You're having such a tough time (I've seen your other posts)

Please go to A&E. Can someone mind your toddler? Can you get DH to come home?

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 20/03/2022 14:25

When I had round ligament pain I was convinced I was mc.
Hoping things are OK for you op.

Graceviolet1 · 20/03/2022 14:37

A and E won’t be able to scan you. If you aren't bleeding there is no need to go to A and E. As a healthcare professional, ChloeHel should know this..

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 20/03/2022 14:41

I'm sorry you're so stressed
If it is a miscarriage (IF) there is likely nothing that could be done so you just need to wait for your appointment tomorrow. I know you'll have a stressful wait but that's how it is sadly. I really hope it's good news.

LightSpeeds · 20/03/2022 14:45

I was just thinking too that the sharp pain sounds like round ligament pain which is VERY painful but normal.

Try to relax (easier said than done, I know). I had lots of pains (some very bad) in ALL my pregnancies so I'd say that really, bleeding is when you need to worry.

You've had a really tough day but everything really is probably OK. However, get to A&E if you think you need to although be aware that it could be one very big long additional stress that you could do without.

(I had a mc at 16 weeks and pain was not the first symptom.)

Thinking of you...

ChloeHel · 20/03/2022 14:49

@Graceviolet1 no they can’t scan her and not once did I say they could but they can refer her to a department that can!

Justwingingit2005 · 20/03/2022 14:50

A and E won't offer a pregnancy ultrasound.
I had pain in early pregnancy and was told with no bleeding I needed to wait until epu was open unless the pain was agony.

Bakeacake131 · 20/03/2022 14:56

@GeneLovesJezebel

Ring 111 for advice. Pains in one side could be ectopic.
It’s not going to be ectopic at 17 weeks!
OopsImDoingItAgain · 20/03/2022 15:00

The sharp pain has eased but still having that about to come on my period feeling, just that dull ache in lower back and thighs I always get before I come on. I'm waiting for the blood and keep needing the loo but nothing is happening. I'm needing to go to the toilet every hour or so with the pressure and every time I think it'll be the baby I end up having another small bowel movement not sure if it's just from the pressure. Sorry tmi but not googling whether it's another sign or not. That is what I thought about A&E, the maternity unit said it wouldn't be and online seemed to echo that. I'm not trying to make excuses just trying to do the right thing Sad

Oh bless you. I didn’t see your other post re: head injury but it sounds like you might need to just wait for your appointment tomorrow. Is it first thing in the morning? Unless you start to bleed, in which case a&e.

I’m sorry you’re going through thisFlowers

BrutusMcDogface · 20/03/2022 15:04

When I miscarried, I had regular contractions. As you’ve had a baby already, you should hopefully be able to recognise if you have contractions (and hopefully you won’t).

Maybe you just have a bit of an upset tummy?

Lou98 · 20/03/2022 15:06

@OopsImDoingItAgain from your last update it really does sound like it could be a urine infection that needs treated asap when pregnant

ChloeHel · 20/03/2022 15:07

Ah OP I do understand the stress. But if I was in your position I really would want any form of help possible and I’d be going to A&E regardless of how major or minor my symptoms were. I hope you get the help you need and hope you have good news tomorrow :)

CaMePlaitPas · 20/03/2022 15:11

This sounds like round ligament pain but obviously you know your body better than I do. I'm 18 weeks too and recently my nether regions have been full of pressure, like it's about to explode. This is normal and I recognise it from my first pregnancy (now on my third). Some shooting pains in my back and sides too and I recently had that "my period is coming" type feeling, which passed within 24 hours. It's completely bizarre.

I echo other people with regards to A&E though, if you don't think you can wait listen to your body and go in.

TrooBloo · 20/03/2022 15:21

Sending you love OP. This sounds like such a scary situation and it must be awful to be in limbo like this. I hope your scan goes well tomorrow xx

OopsImDoingItAgain · 20/03/2022 15:21

I rang the maternity unit again who have said if I go in now they can do some observations and try and find a heartbeat but no scanning facilities are available and I have the soonest appointment tomorrow anyway they said it'll be more anxiety for you if you come in now and we still can't find it and you are still waiting until tomorrow for anything to be confirmed. They said it could very well be ligaments and stretching and to just try and keep calm and phone them back straight away if any bleeding does start. They said they are meant to advise A&E if in severe pain but that really there isn't much they could do and would probably just admit me pending scan in the morning so if it is period cramps rather than severe it is probably best to manage at home. I want to go in just because I want them to find a heartbeat but they are right it'll set me off more if they still can't find it and if nothing can be done I'd rather be in my own bed killing time until tomorrow morning then on a ward in a constant panic Sad

irishfarmer · 20/03/2022 15:29

I don't really know what to advise, it's good you called the midwives back.
I have had some awful stretching/ ligament pain since about week 12 ish. Hopefully it is that.

Also this might sound weird, any chance you have covid? I have covid right now and even though I have had pain in my hips/ bottom for weeks it has been really bad since I got covid. I can hardly walk!

Whatdramain2022 · 20/03/2022 15:37

Have you got your appendix OP? My DD had appendicitis when pregnant. When I had a mc at your stage, it started with contractions, just like labour, which of course it was. The bleeding came later and it was really heavy and gushing.

Kaw10 · 20/03/2022 15:40

OP I honestly think you should wait until tomorrow, you have your scan anyway and it doesn't sound like anyone can do anything else tonight. Put the TV on for your toddler, put your feet up, order a takeaway for dinner and try to relax. Tomorrow you will have answers and all the stress of running around tonight won't help anything.

TheSweetestHalleluja · 20/03/2022 15:46

I'm sorry you're going through this pain and worry OP.
