Pregnancy after miscarriage

Hello,

I just found out I’m pregnant again (very early days, 4w today). I had a mmc back in April which was diagnosed at almost 12 weeks but baby had stopped growing at 8 weeks and then I fell pregnant again but had a natural mc at 5+5.
This time I am taking progesterone pessaries and aspirin. Anyone else pregnant after a loss? I’m so scared about mmc but trying to relax as much as possible.

I’m pregnant after a miscarriage in March at 7 weeks and terrified.
Iv previously had a mmc blighted ovum diagnosed at 10 weeks but Sac measured 6 weeks. I also have a son and daughter who were conceived after my first miscarriage.

How are you feeling? Dates of my last period say I’m 4 weeks 5 days but I’m pretty sure of when I ovulated so I think I’m 5 weeks today.

Wishing you a healthy pregnancy xx

Cafeaulait27 · 28/09/2021 09:33

Yes, I had 2 mcs - first one at 9 weeks but measuring about 6.4, after seeing a HB at 6 weeks on scan - very traumatic and painful mc at home where I passed the sac and could see the very small foetus in it, buried it in the garden. Second mc a few months later which was only at about 4 weeks, kind of like a heavy period.

I’m so sorry for your losses. I’m pleased to tell you though that I am now 37 weeks with my third pregnancy! I also took progesterone in the first trimester and have taken 150mg aspirin throughout this pregnancy. It’s certainly worked for me, I hope it works for you too.

I worried loads in the first trimester, but we held off having an early scan as it didn’t reassure us the first time as we lost the pregnancy. Everything was fine! We then worried until the 20 week scan, but after that things got much more relaxed and I was able to enjoy being pregnant a bit. Little things could still make me spiral though - I’ve been in a few times crying my eyes out worrying about reduced movement. Definitely always call triage if you are worried at all.

Good luck 🌈

Hi @Lucy8721 congratulations and you are one week ahead of me then. Do you have any symptoms? My boobs are a bit sore and I’m terribly windy which I think is mainly a side effect from the pessaries. I am trying to think positively but can’t feel excited and scared that the progesterone may mask a mc/mmc. I am aware we are so lucky to be pregnant again (ttc #1 for us) so trying to look at the positives and that this is a fresh, new start/chance. I hope all goes well for both 💐

@Cafeaulait27 that’s great to hear congratulations! You are almost there now and thanks for sharing your experience. I totally get you re scans as we also saw a heartbeat at 7w with the mmc and it gave us false reassurance. However I think I can’t wait til 12w and would also want to know whether everything is ok so I think I will be the opposite and have lots of scans if I can.
I am a midwife myself and know how important it is to go get checked if you feel something is not normal so you did the right thing by going in. I hope all goes well the last few weeks, you will be cuddling your little rainbow baby very soon ❤️

@Selena33 totally understandable! I think I got paranoid that an early scan might cause bleeding and I have a phobia of bleeding during pregnancy now due to the miscarriages, I was so worried about irritating anything or having a scan without a medical need that I decided not to. I did however find it really helpful to have a scan at 16 weeks as it was such a long wait between 12 and 20!

thank you! I’m anxious now about something going wrong at such a late stage, I just want to get the baby here safely! The baby is moving around so regularly and feels really strong so it does feel like everything is ok in there. Just trying to pass the time! X

Lucy8721 · 28/09/2021 10:58

I don’t really have any symptoms apart from slightly sore nipples. I feel like Iv had a couple of waves of nausea but not sure if I have imagined it! Congratulations on your pregnancy :) I’m just so nervous and feel like I’m not allowing myself to get excited about it at the moment. My children are 11 and 9, it feels like the first time is pregnant all over again xx

Selena33 · 28/09/2021 12:00

I can relate to that too @Cafeaulait27! I feel like I’m overcautious about everything. And yes it’s such a long wait from 12w to 20w especially as it’s too early to feel movements!
The last few weeks can really drag for many women as you are just so ready to meet your baby. I’m sure everything will be ok, just try to keep busy like you say to stop the mind from worrying!

@Lucy8721 It really is very early for us to feel symptoms and some people don’t get many at all anyway so will see how it progresses.
I can’t feel excited either but I think that’s normal. I hope the weeks go by quickly for us! Are you thinking of getting any early scans?

Lucy8721 · 28/09/2021 12:08

Ideally I would like to get an early scan around 8 weeks. I’m just trying to take each day at a time now and relax as much as I can. Will you get an early scan? X

AwkwardPaws27 · 28/09/2021 12:36

How did you get the progesterone prescribed please - GP?
I've had 3 miscarriages, last one in August, & just found out I'm pregnant again (no period in between but think I'm around 5 weeks?).

I asked for progesterone at the EPU last time when the bleeding began but they said no.

I don't know who to ask... I've been referred to a recurrent miscarriage clinic but apparently the average wait is 45 weeks.

Oti21 · 28/09/2021 13:13

Congratulations everyone!

I have just found out I’m pregnant after a miscarriage too, will only be 4 weeks tomorrow though so still very early. I’m trying to act sane but I’m worried about everything a dog jumped hard up on to my stomach yesterday and that made me panic and I’ve just been invited for the Covid booster jab (NHS) and I’m too scared to go for it just now even though i’m pro vaccine.

@AwkwardPaws27 I was wondering the same about progesterone and asprin but I wasn’t sure if my GP would even consider it.

@Selena33 have you been prescribed asprin or are you buying it yourself? Did your GP prescribe the progesterone?

Selena33 · 28/09/2021 13:14

Good plan @Lucy8721 I am going to ring epu when I’m about 6w and ask for a scan and then see how I feel afterwards but I’m thinking I may want another one possibly after 8/9w as that’s when I had the mmc.

@AwkwardPaws27 congratulations and fingers crossed for you too! I did ask the consultant with my last mc and she agreed to it but you could try gp too. I know it really depends on who you talk to and their views unfortunately. Otherwise you can pay for one private consultation and they should prescribe it (would also be the quickest way). 45 weeks wow that’s terrible! Best of luck xx

Congrats @Oti21! We are about the same as I’m just 4w today so super early and I know how you feel. At this stage baby is very tiny and well down in the pelvis so the dog jumping would not do anything. Sending you positive vibes!
I self-prescribed the aspirin, I’m taking 150mg and taking full responsibility for it of course but I’ve heard so many positive stories and I do think it won’t do any harm so may as well try. I asked for progesterone during my last mc at the epu and was lucky to have a cooperative consultant there.

OP posts:
Oti21 · 28/09/2021 13:52

Thanks @Selena33 the sane part of me knows that haha but I’m just a bit paranoid. I was thinking of doing the same with the asprin as I’ve read lots of positives too. I’m also going to ring the epu and ask for an early scan but almost don’t want to jinx it so not sure when to call. We aren’t telling anybody so it’s nice to speak to people in a similar position. x

Selena33 · 28/09/2021 16:55

Yes same here we aren’t saying a word to anyone so it’s nice to find some support online and people who can understand 🙂
I think 7 weeks it’s a good time if you want an early scan as by then they should see a heartbeat otherwise sometimes may be too early and leave you more worried than reassured, unless you have any pain, bleeding, etc. I was thinking of having a very early one at 6w but not sure yet, I guess will decide in the coming weeks. Wish we could fast forward to 20w 😜

bez91 · 28/09/2021 18:55

With you OP it's so so hard! Do try and see if EPU will scan you early if you can.

I've had 3 MCs in the last 18 months; natural MC at 7 weeks, MMC at 11 weeks and natural MC at 5 weeks quite recently. I recently got a positive test and I'm 7 weeks pregnant tomorrow.

I am under the recurrent MC clinic and also managed to get progesterone and high dose folic acid despite them not yet running any tests on me. They scanned me early at 4+6 (they wanted to go off LMP even though I told them I ovulated mega late) and couldn't see much then last Wednesday they dated me at 6 weeks as expected and we saw a heartbeat.

The reassurance quickly went away and now back to wondering if everything is ok, it's hard and nothing you can explain to someone who hasn't been through it themselves but you're not alone 💕

Oti21 · 28/09/2021 19:28

The EPU said they would scan me at 6 weeks if I got pregnant again and I’m very tempted to take them up on that offer and book a private one for a couple of weeks later. I just feel much better when I have information. It took 4 weeks and 4 scans to confirm I was miscarrying last time but I think it was clear based on the information from the first scan I just didn’t understand it properly at the time. Would be great to fast forward!

TinyTickler · 28/09/2021 21:10

Hello all, hoping this a rainbow pregnancy for all of us.

Very early days for me - 4 weeks tomorrow after a missed miscarriage at the end of June. Very anxious!

Selena33 · 29/09/2021 09:14

@bez91 sorry for your losses, it’s so tough. Congratulations on your pregnancy and that’s great! Sounds like everything is going in the right direction ❤️ I hope weeks fly by for you but I totally get how you feel… that’s why we are here, hopefully we can find some support in one another. Are you having another scan or waiting until the 12w one?

@Oti21 I’m just like you. I would rather have bad news than being in limbo especially after the past experiences. I felt so cheated in a way when I was told at almost 12w that baby had stopped growing at 8w! I know scans can only tell us if things are ok at that exact moment but I think I will feel better if I know what’s happening from time to time. It’s annoying, I’m working hard on trusting my body to do this but it’s not easy.

Welcome @TinyTickler I’m also 4+1 hope we are lucky this time 💐

So sorry for your mmc OP, but congrats on your new pregnancy. I had a mmc December 2020 and then fell pregnant again March 2021. We booked an early scan at 8 weeks and I was absolutely full of dread before hand and all the way up to waiting for sonographer to find something. Thankfully there was a little blob and heartbeat but it took a few days to sink in. I was stunned/shocked but any relief came later. Miscarriage can take away the early joy of new pregnancies but I told myself that was ok as my brain was just trying to protect me from any more heartbreak. Once we got past 12 week scan and that was OK I felt better and have been able to enjoy (for most part!) this pregnancy. I'm now 30 weeks and all well so far. Those first few weeks were very tough and looking back I just had to ride out the time which felt loooong. Look after yourself OP and wishing you well for your new pregnancy journey Flowers x

bez91 · 30/09/2021 08:38

@Selena33 I'm waiting for the consultant I was under for RMC to look at my notes to decide if they want to rescan but I've booked a private one too for in a couple of weeks at 9 weeks.
Hang on in there, the waiting is just horrible and you feel like you went to fast forward time to the next appointment/scan or 9 months!

Oti21 · 30/09/2021 19:23

My EPU aren’t doing reassurance scans because of the impact of covid on staffing so it may be worth checking your local ones if anybody was hoping for one. They usually allow people to get private ones there too but these have also been stopped too!

Selena33 · 04/10/2021 13:00

@Seasalt1984 congratulations that’s amazing :) Not that long to go now, hope you get to enjoy these last few weeks and thanks for sharing your story

@bez91 that’s right time just goes so slow when you are counting the days!

@Oti21 thanks and that’s not good. I know my local epu unit has been giving the same care as pre covid (I also work at the hospital). I actually called them up today and I have a scan booked for next Tuesday when I will be 6w. Also I had an ectopic 5 years ago (that was my first pregnancy) and then went on the pill since starting to ttc this year. That’s probably the reason I don’t have to fight for an early scan!

How is everyone feeling? I’m so bloated and gassy it’s crazy. Also constipated and sore boobs however I do think it’s mostly side effects from the progesterone pessaries. Just 4+5 today!

OP posts:
Oti21 · 05/10/2021 21:42

That’s good you have your appointment booked @Selena33 I’m going to book a private one but seeing how long I can hold out 😬 I’m also holding off booking in with a midwife just in case.

I’m going a little bit mad over analysing every tiny thing but overall actually feel ok! I do have very sore boobs and have had all sorts of random twinges and aches (arms, legs, back) but they seem to have settled today. Would really like to fast forward a few weeks!

Selena33 · 06/10/2021 17:14

@Oti21 I totally get you. I’m really dreading the booking appointment as last time it was in vain however it is worth getting in touch with the mw around week 8/9 so they have time to book the 12w scan for you. I’m also waiting as much as possible before I tell her and in regards to scan I will update here and depending on how that one goes I will decide if/when to go for a private one.

I also have random cramps etc but glad you are feeling well, most of the time symptoms don’t kick in until 6weeks if they do so will see!

@Selena33 let us know how it goes Smile

I have a scan at my EPU this morning. I have had pressure on one side and didn’t feel very well yesterday. By tea time I had some very sharp pains so phoned my EPU who told me to go in. Dr did an internal which they said was all ok and they have booked me in for a scan this morning just to check the location of the pregnancy as I’ll only be 5 weeks. I had brown spotting on wiping when I got home and one really tiny dark red clot which has made me worry all night, although no real spotting this morning so have everything crossed it was just the internal and some old blood…

My stomach has also been upset over night and the pressure/pain seems to have resolved. Strangely I was hospitalised with similar in my last pregnancy but the conclusion was they weren’t related. I’m usually completely healthy so worried my body just isn’t happy with pregnancy!

DP is supportive but fast asleep and still haven’t told anybody else, sorry for the essay but I do feel better just writing this down.

Hope everybody’s doing ok x

Selena33 · 07/10/2021 08:43

Hi @Oti21 sorry to hear you have been feeling a bit poorly. Best of luck for today’s scan, keeping fingers crossed for you 🤞🏼
