Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Bloooodeeeehellll. I hereby solemnly swear nerver ever to joke about going to hospitals again.

At 10 R had bad diarrhea and started vomiting. Not spitting up, proper vomiting, streams. Then he went all pale and completely limp. Wouldn't cry or react - I pinched him, I poked him. All I could think of was to keep him awake, as he kept wanting to close his eyes. He was so limp and went blue in his face, I was convinced he was going to die. Called the ambulance, who was here really quickly. They gave him oxygen, and checked his heart etc. He started crying on the way to hospital (but was breathing through all this at least). Left the hospital at 1am, with doctor having checked all. Apparently this happens when they vomit sometimes - they even stop breathing. Wtf??? My heart won't survive a next time. Honestly.

Bring on that first aid course, I need all the help I can get!

Phew. Had to get that off my chest.

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 09:39

Sal - you poor thing & R (obviously). Hope you never have to go through that again. I´ve got goosebumps just thinking about it BTW "temp" doctors are called "locums"
Peachy - what´s DLA? As far as I´m aware the 328 euros is the standard payment but can go up depending on the severity of the disability.

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 09:41

Peachy - have you managed to get out the front door yet?

SalLikesCoffee · 02/10/2008 09:55

Thanks Soph! I need that. Think I should keep one locked up somewhere, my heart won't take it again!

Locums - yes, that's the word I was looking for. Every single one I've met here has been really good.

OMaLittle · 02/10/2008 10:00

Sal!! You poor thing. You must be exhausted, apart from anything else. Has DH taken the day off/can he come home early? What did they say it was? Just a D&V bug? God, I can't even imagine. Huge hugs.

Soph, you and Scorpio have really defibrillated this thread, thank you!

All well here, DD2 sleeping SO much better (though quite crabby in the days - seems to be either/or!) and expressing is going OK and I think we'll make it to six months on exclusive bf which I'm happy about. DD2 having a one-off session at nursery next week on Tues am, have offered to go into work but if not, hell, I'll just go and have a long indulgent coffee with the papers somewhere.

DH took the girls to his parents on Sun, it was bliss! Naturally I missed them loads and was hanging around the front door for about half an hour from 7.30 because they got stuck in traffic on the way back.

We are going to Lanzarote instead of SA, prob won't be that hot (Soph? I'm Scampmum, by the way, in case you think someone random is being all chummy - no, we have HISTORY) but SA was just going to cost WAAY too much (like MORE than the extra two months' pay, and I already bought the Phil & Teds!). We are hopefully going for a little villa in the hills and to just chill and go for walks and car explorations and lie in the sun (fully clothed) and read while the kids have their naps. Heaven.

SalLikesCoffee · 02/10/2008 10:06

Oh btw, the medic in the ambulance said that we should always keep an overnight bag ready for ourselves and R, as it happens so often that you have to rush to hospital with children! Surely not?! (I'll keep it ready, but sincerely hope it'll just take up space.)

R fine this morning, feeds fine etc. His hands are freezing, so I'm now obviously a bit paranoid. I refuse to read up on internet, as I've got a faint suspicion it'll say something about heart problems (as they kept asking if he had heart problems and listened for a heart murmur, which he didn't have). I don't care whether I'm wasting money or not, am going to make a private appointment to see the paediatrician again so that he could check him out. Even if not necessary.

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 10:09

OMaLittle - aahh, that explains the chumminess then Bet you´re looking forward to your hols, when are you going? Pleased DD2 sleeping for you. I´m having a semi-relaxing morning tomorrow as the physios at the hospital I take same 3 mornings a week are on a course. It means I can drop DH & DS1 at school then do some leisurely shopping for DS1 party on Sunday before dropping Sam at nursery and coming to work. Actually feel exhausted already

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 10:11

"I take same 3 mornings ..."
I obviously meant Sam ..... my god I´m forgetting by children´s names now ... heelllpppp!

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 10:13

Sal - hopefully the paramedic meant that they take so many children to hospital often and the parents aren´t prepared as you do have to dash off. Not that you will be rushing off to hospital regularly. Have only had 1 mad dash to hospital with DS1 - scariest moment ever!
Going for break now, back soon xxxxx

SalLikesCoffee · 02/10/2008 10:16

Oma, a villa in the hills sounds amazing!!! Strange how adventure holidays have now been replaced with dreams of quiet relaxing. That's now my idea of heaven.
Good to hear things are easier for you now. And well done for having done the 6 months exclusive that you wanted so much!!!

Yes, the doctor said that it's "99% sure" that it's just a bug (at which case I wanted to go on about "what about the 1% chance ), but managed to shut up.

Dh couldn't take the day off, as he has a really important meeting that couldn't be moved. If R was still ill, I'm sure he would have skipped it, whatever the consequences work wise, but he's fine this morning. I'm letting him sleep - poor thing looks exhausted. I'm so tired I feel like crying (ok, really I am crying but I think it's delayed shock) but can't sleep. So I keep on sneaking up on him checking whether he's breathing. So glad it's almost weekend.

SalLikesCoffee · 02/10/2008 10:23

Yes, Soph, you're right. In retrospect it was kind of funny - I've had a bath earlier so had to change back into "day" clothes fast - grabbed whatever was nearest. Only when we were walking into A&E did I bother to check whether my jeans are actually buttoned up. It was - which is a good thing, as I wasn't wearing any underwear!

Dh on the other hand (I went with ambulance, he followed in car) grabbed whatever was near the front door, so he arrived carrying the camera!!! lol, they must have thought we're loonies.

scorpio1 · 02/10/2008 10:54

Ooh Sal, hope you're ok. at bag ready though - have only ever been to hospital twice in six years like that. (R had seizures)

Think im having a period - whoop whoop!

OMa hope you got my email and have a nice break.

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 10:58

Morning Scorpio Does that mean the next one will be on the way soon

LOL at your DH Sal carrying camera, please tell me he had clothes on

scorpio1 · 02/10/2008 10:59

Was walking through town yesterday when the police stopped a woman (who looked, um, a drunk? is that polite?) and she a massive kitchen knife in her hand walking fast down the street! loads of police and handcuffs etc. Someone got killed (stabed) a mile from mine too last weekend. Live in small cornish town.....so weird, and horrible. Scary.

scorpio1 · 02/10/2008 11:00

Soph it takes me forever to get pg anyway when im not BF, so who knows!!

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 11:04

It´s one of my favourite days today. Chips for lunch and for the next hour and 10 mins there is no-one in my library. Am going to put the radio on now ... bliss

scorpio1 · 02/10/2008 11:05

oh yes i remember your chips for lunch days

im off to the pub tonight, pub is doing a deal on bottles of wine, yay!

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 11:08

Scorpio - scary indeed!
I´m getting very broody again, which is worrying as I´m not the broody type. The worst thing is that I know we definitely couldn´t afford another one and the house just isn´t big enough - although could manage if the boys doubled up I just have to keep justifying why we can´t have any more

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 11:08

Sounds like my sort of pub

scorpio1 · 02/10/2008 11:11

i'm always broody! 1 more for me, then no more. dh can get the snip!

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 11:14

Does anyone have any savoury non-dairy recipes for grown-ups?

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 11:16

My DH wouldn´t even entertain the idea of going for the snip. However, I can´t blame him as I wouldn´t want to get myself sterilised.

scorpio1 · 02/10/2008 11:18

oh i wouldnt want to be, but he says he does, and that he wouldnt want anymore children after our fourth, which i agree with. easiest way for everyone as hormonal contraception doesnt agree with me very well. and we would have 5dc...

SalLikesCoffee · 02/10/2008 11:24

Famous last words Scorpio, we'll be hearing of Little Scorpio in the next couple of months, won't we?!

Scary about the stabbing! I don't know it I'm only noticing more now, but it seems to be more and more common. For example here where we live - it's supposed to be safe, but the amount of car windows that's been smashed recently is just ridiculous. To be honest, I won't walk around alone at night anymore. (The shorter way to get to our flat is through a little park - but I now always take the long way round if I'm alone and it's dark.)

Soph, I fancy your chips! It's cruel to tempt me - suspect it's either bread or (oh, the shame...) instant noodles here.

Soph73 · 02/10/2008 11:24

Wow, 5 dc don´t think I could cope with that many
