eggandketchup · 28/05/2008 12:56

Hi all, this is my second attempt on MN ( my 1st help question was last nite which i got a reply to and was made to feel very welcome)and was told about this thread this morning

My DD was born 11 days overdue on 16th April at 9.3pbs so is 6 weeks old today and is called Jasmin. My 1st at 40. Am hp as larry as thought i was never going to have kids caus i hadnt met anyone i wanted or trusted to have kids with until i met my bf 1.5 years ago.

It has been great reading through this thread as it telling where i am going wrong when it comes to feeding at nite. I am bf
and am trying to get her settled in her moses basket between 9-10. The problem is that she was and still is half waking up every 1-1.5 hrs and i am giving her a dream feed which takes 15-20 mins and then putting her back, therefor meaning i am getting up 4-5 times a nite sometimes less sometimes more.Am knackered..... Thanx Scorpio as i now know that i need to feed her fer longer and will try nudging her tonite to encourage a longer feed. Also will not change her as often. She is waking up properly mostly around 6ish and doesnt go back to sleep if im lucky until 9 or 10ish for 2 hours. Sometimes has a nap in the afternoon. I find that she will most times go to sleep if out walking with her in the pram or oif we go out in the car..am limited there as i dont drive.

Its all so hit and miss and dont know if im doing alrite or not but she mostly seems hp enough.

Other than that she is quite agood baby and only cries when she wants or has done something and then stops when it has been dealt with.

She started smiling about 2 weeks ago and is now trying to laugh which is really funny caus when you laugh at her she trys to back it can go on for ages and she looks really pleased with her self. Am feeling so proud of her.

Am in awe of you PFJ.

Love it that i was told (thanx sis) about MN as i already dont know what i would do without it. you all a lovely font of info which is like golddust to me.

VictorianSqualor · 28/05/2008 13:00

Welcome eggandketchup, add yourself to the list

One thing about sleep, at night, yes do the big feed thing, but in the day, don't worry about getting her to sleep, you have the luxury of no other children driving you bananas so chill and let her routine guide you. Enjoy her.

ThePFJ · 28/05/2008 13:15

Thanks eggandketchup.

I totally agree with the 'enjoy your baby' advice. It took me a little while before I didnt feel so depressed and started to really spend hours cuddling and interacting with my baby everyday. Now, no matter how ill he gets me and baby Jack have a very strong bond and last week he smiled back at me for the first time and I closed the door in our hospital room and just cried and cried.. I was so happy.

scorpio1 · 28/05/2008 13:20

Today, we received a dress and 2 t-shirts in the post from MIL for Millie. We havent spoken to her for 4 weeks, for various reasons. We are going to have to ring her now, aren't we. Arse.

Sal22 · 28/05/2008 13:21

PFJ! But you are coping so amazingly well, he's very lucky to have you as a mom! Good luck with everything, and of course also the move.

And welcome, eggandketchup

Quick question: Any tips on how to help baby get rid of his constipation??? Poor thing is in agony, he's had 2 big (and a couple of comfort sips) bf's this morning now, i've even given him some lukewarm water, but still no movement since around 10 last night! Oh, I'll have to take cover once it's all going through...

Sal22 · 28/05/2008 13:23

lol scorpio. damn gifts.

scorpio1 · 28/05/2008 13:24

will dh do that later

scorpio1 · 28/05/2008 13:25

sorry

will let dh do that later

eggandketchup · 28/05/2008 13:31

PFJ
Stress can also be a cause of eczema so when you do get Jack home hopefully it will just disappear.

I am loving every second with Jasmin and am just going with the flow with what she wants to do through the day. Itry to take her out for a walk every day, doesnt always happen, just for the fresh air and she tends to conk out from the motion. But am def going to try longer feeds at nite. Wow have forgotten what sleeping for more than 2 hrs is like hehe.

scorpio1 · 28/05/2008 13:34

do you feed her in bed in the night? i hardly wake up for it anymore! i feed her then plonk her back in bed

eggandketchup · 28/05/2008 13:42

Sit on the edge of the bed to feed her all proped up on pillows, havent mastered lying down and feeding her, not quite sure how to go about it
Also caus im so tired am also hardly awake and am scared that would squish her if was able to do it that way.

eggandketchup · 28/05/2008 13:48

Mean by hardly awake not having had a proper deep sleep, am always in that zombie like state where not in either state.

scorpio1 · 28/05/2008 13:50

i practised in the day; i am a first time bfer too. i just sort of stick it in her mouth!

eggandketchup · 28/05/2008 13:57

Like the sound of that.... will practise today and take no prisoners and stick it to her.

VictorianSqualor · 28/05/2008 13:59

The chances of falling asleep and squishing her are minute.

As long as you don't have a quilt covering her and haven't been drinking or smoking, or have taken any drugs that are likely to affect your sleep state (i.e. are sleeping heavier than normal) then it's quite safe to have her with you rather than sit on the edge of the bed.

Look here at the research done.
FSIDS are even supporting it now, as part of the unicef baby friendly hospital guidelines.

I wonder if those of us who had CS's find it easier to BF laying down?
Thinking about it, I learnt how to BF, laying down, the first time either of my boys latched on I was laying down just after my section.

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 28/05/2008 14:07

the 2nd time she fed we were lying down and as you know i had vb.

sorry 1 hand typing

Piccalilli2 · 28/05/2008 14:18

PFJ, so sorry about everything you're going through with Jack, I'm amazed by how you're coping.

Zoe is smiling although doesn't get much chance to practice as she's too busy eating.

eggandketchup · 28/05/2008 14:22

You know its quite funny caus when i think back over the last 6 wks, i tend to bring Jasmin downstairs when she wakes up in the morning to let bf sleep as he is working lates atm and gets in 12:30ish. Quite often after feeding her sat on the settee all propped up against me, we both drift off to sleep for an hour or two and i always feel really refreshed after these. I am not scared of moving and squishing her at these times, in fact i find that when i wake up i have hardly moved and J is the one who has snuggled into me.
Is this maybe on a par with the shared sleeping? if so then def will try lying down feeding.

thanx VS the article is great and puts my mind at rest.

VictorianSqualor · 28/05/2008 14:25

There is also this one.

OP posts:
Sal22 · 28/05/2008 14:26

Nappy changed, everyone's happy again now

Not sure about cs - it does make sense, as you'll be lying down for longer I guess. But I can only really remember feeding lying down in hospital once or twice, whereas most of the time I was sitting up when feeding. But I was only shown how to do it sitting up, so maybe it depends on the midwife if you're a first timer.

Sal22 · 28/05/2008 15:12

Not that you have to be taught how to of course, but I just think you'll be more likely to continue the way a "professional" showed you if you can't get another way right.

VictorianSqualor · 28/05/2008 15:24

I think you do kind of need to be taught, and that maybe if you're 'taught' (shown?) how to do it laying down first it's easier, because when you're sat up it's a totally different way to do it, your boob falls straight into babies face, which is doesn't lying down.

Also breast size must make a difference, I'm a 38DD so not tiny, but in comparison to the sizes some people go when feeding, not that big, if they were much bigger I'd have to arrange myself differently.
