September 2014 - Babies turn 1!

First birthdays are starting to arrive and our babies are becoming toddlers! What will the next year have in store?

DD didn't lose weight when she started getting about, but she is putting less weight on. Still big, but slightly less big now.

This morning she made her was all the way upstairs on her own, without me noticing. Oops. "Mum, why is DSis upstairs?" my son called as he was getting dressed. I guess we need to start being a lot more diligent about closing the stairgate.

We have been had several steps taken several times and have for a few weeks. I don't consider her to be 'walking' though. When my eldest started walking she did first steps and was off - walking everywhere straight away. DD clearly isn't doing that. I don't really think of her as walking. She can take some steps, but her usual form of movement is crawling (and climbing!) not walking

Thanks Lil! How are we at the 1-year mark already??

Glad to hear it's not just DD getting thinner. When she started crawling she also started bulking up but walking must burn more calories. I guess running will burn even more!

DD didn't lose weight, but she stopped gaining when she started moving about of her own accord.

She's now cruising around the furniture and will stand holding on with just one hand, but she doesn't have the confidence to let go entirely yet.

Kisses are given on demand now, which is mega cute

Can't believe there are already babies turning one. DS has another 6 weeks to go. The last year has absolutely flown by, unlike the 9 months of pregnancy before it!

Ah topsy, I often think of how time was dragging this time last year!

DD is also gaining weight more slowly now she's crawling about, no sign of walking yet though!

Team - baby kisses are so cute! I'm always asking DD for kisses but she rarely obliges!

Not been on the thread for a while, so much to catch up.

Can't believe some of the LOs are already turning one. J's birthday is September 23rd so he has a little way to go yet.

Mobility wise, he is crawling, cruising, climbing and standing - and letting go with one hand. He is lots and lots of fun - I love this stage. Sometimes his babble sounds like words ie "hello", "dinner", "wheres (brother's name)" but I'm not sure if this is pure fluke or if he's actually talking. He does seem to understand a lot, and answers "yeah" and "no" - although again, this could be a fluke. He knows everyone and will point if you ask him where people are.

He's such a happy little man, and very outgoing. We recently had lots of family down, and he really enjoyed socialising with them - even though they are people he has barely met.

We have the 10 month check today. I feel bad as since I have been back at work, I haven't had him weighed since the end of May . I had been going fortnightly up until this point.

Have any of you attempted a hair cut yet ? J is well in need of one, but I don't know if he's too young ?

I typed a long post and lost it. So frustrating!

Ok, trying again. I havent posted for ages.

DS is crawling and cruising. He can let go with one hand and stand alone and is very quick at stair climbing. He babbles a lot but has no words as such, plenty of dadada etc but not really in context. He can wave and clap hands if you ask him to. He has an obsession with balls and wheels, anything that spins (so glad we have a child lock on the washing machine!) and loves chasing after the cats.

Im due to get him weighed in a few weeks but he does look longer and leaner to me since he has been mobile (as do the cats!).

He has been in his bedroom for the last 3 nights, so far so good, he was in with us for a lot longer than people seemed to think was right but we have no regrets.

I have trimmed the back of his hair myself twice as he was getting a mullet!

Ooh a new thread, and almost 1 already. Fastest year ever!

No chance of a haircut here, though it is finally starting to grow. Maybe in another 6 months or so.

team how's the milk ladder going? I still haven't started yet, waiting for his allergy test results to come back.

No kisses here, tho he does approach open mouthed to bite my face - does that count

Its my shoulder that keeps getting bitten. There were 6 teeth at last count.

Biting here too as opposed to kisses. But still only 2 (very sharp) teeth!

Not walking either, but cruising, crawling and climbing, and yesterday he started pushing his walker but getting frustrated at hitting deadends

So yesterday after a fun very long day out, when we came home and after ds was put to bed, I spent a little time with dh looking at the early days photo ... Remembering all different things and telling ourselves well done for making it !!!! :)
The first few days and specially his birthday, one year ago, was both the worst and the best day of my life. I never before experienced the great, great feelings I had when I first met him... But just minutes after that it turned to an unbelievably difficult day with us not knowing what is going on and eventually having an explanation and seeing a baby in cube with very many wires and needles attached to his tiny body; it was very scary but I never lost hope...

Each day everything got better and better afterwards; he was very strong and recovered soon...

We also looked at photos and remembered all those difficult days with terrible reflux, colic and painful hours that he just cried and we could not do anything to help him.

And of course all those lovely and fun moments we had together with him doing new things every day...

He is now like a tiny little person and he is an absolute joy. I love him with all my heart and would not change the world with the experience of being his mum...

Completely off topic here but please tell me I'm not the only one finding August hard work? In my head it was going to be a lovely sunny month and we were going to go out and walk / play lots in the sunshine before I go back to work next month. In reality it's rained / been overcast more days than not so going out had been tricky, almost all the baby groups have disbanded for the summer, and nearly everyone I know is working (or have gone back to work in the case of most of the baby group mums I know), and I am on the last dregs of my savings so can't afford to do much. Oh and DH is having to work most days from the office that's 40 miles away so he's leaving at about 7.30am and not getting back until 6.30pm. We're therefore stuck in the house on our own more than I expected and days seem LOOOONG. It doesn't help I guess that Jessica doesn't nap much and also keeps getting up early (5am this morning!) so finding ways in the house to entertain her until bedtime at 7pm is proving draining. Plus, well, I'm getting quite lonely tbh. Last week it was Friday and I was chatting to someone I bumped into and I realised that it was the first face-to-face conversation I'd had that week with someone that wasn't DH or Jessica. I'm actually starting to look forward to going back to work things are getting so bad....

yes yes yes to august being tricky. We have just been to center parcs and whilst b loved it, dh was a bloody nightmare. he made himself think he would hate it before we went, so he did. took it out on all of us. hardly did anything with b, just sat and moped and grumbled. really awful, so I found it really stressful. We went with friends and i kept apologising for his behaviour. was so cross, now I just feel hugely let down by him. he kept saying how it was his holiday and how he wished we had gone to a cottage in Scotland so he could climb mountains.

The days of holidays being about him (or indeed you) are gone now. I guess he just has to mourn the fact. Unless you are lucky enough to be able to afford a holiday nanny then holidays will be based around children for, urm, probably the next 15 years or so!

In fact, with baby still being little at the moment, this year may be the last where you get a chance to have more grown-up elements to your holidays.

Holidays are quite stressful events for us - keeping the children entertained and having a fun and exciting time is very draining for me and DH. But holidays are not about us anymore. The purpose of our holidays is to create memories and good times for the children, not us. So it ends up being the very opposite of relaxing or a 'holiday' for us. But that is what it is now we are a family. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I agree Fate. And actually, if you let yourself, you can experience things from childhood all over again with your children. But holidays are harder work now because parenting is work and is constant. Gone are the days of pool lounging (and mountain climbing!) I'd be annoyed too Holls, sorry he brought your holiday down!

I know what you mean KitKat. My baby groups are still going through the holidays luckily, without them I'd go mad! The weather has not been good though it does feel a bit of a wash out summer.

We went to paradise wildlife park in Hertfordshire today - it was excellent! I'd recommend it to anyone nearby!

Hello all, it was E's birthday yesterday and his party is tomorrow, thank you for the birthday wishes :)

I adore my amazing little boy, when I think about this past year and wonderful he is I just can't believe how lucky I am, I can't wait to see how my cheeky chappy develops :)

kitkat I am having the same August as you! I have 3 weeks of mat leave left and should be squeezing every last bit out of it. A lot of baby groups have stopped, saying that they often clashed with naps, grotty weather has restricted us and DS gets very bored indoors all day. On top of that I hurt my ankle a month ago and walking a lot leaves me with an aching/throbbing foot every night! Sorry, am all doom and gloom today! Happy first birthday to all the babies and hope the party is great cookie

Last night DD slept through from 6.45 until 5.30!!!

She did it once before about a month ago, so this is only the second time ever. Let's see how tonight goes...

Also, someone seems to have stolen my baby and replaced her with a really cute small child. When did they suddenly grow up?!
