I see a thread was started in Chat, but it's obviously more appropriate here. I've been in an American forum where someone wondered if it's of international interest.

Right now it's so early that there's no predicting what will develop, whether it will snowball into something catastrophic. Oddly, after a few hours, it's still not known for sure if they caught the shooter, which is strange, as they supposed knew where the shot came from. I'm already running across some odd conspiracy theories.

What an appalling thing to say. CK’s death at the hands of an unidentified shooter is dreadful. A tragedy for him and his family. Worse is that it will be exploited by others trying to build on the divisions in society and politics of which CK was undoubtedly a major part.

Just a few weeks ago a right wing MAGA person murdered a democratic senator, her husband and dog.

The major issue here is guns AND division. Of all the comments from leaders that have seen, it is those on the left that are condemning violence and calling for unity. It is Trump who is blaming left wing radicals in the basis of no evidence and demanding retribution. Tragically I can only see things getting worse.

No, sorry I should have been more clear, I was referring to the thousands of jeering, taunting and celebrating comments on social media.. including on his widows instagram account. Just breathtaking cruelty.

There’s a great breakdown of this on the New York Times but it’s paywalled. I wasn’t lying in the slightest - all the evidence shows that right wing extremists are the overwhelming majority of violence in the US. I’ve listed the political leanings of the most recent political assassination attempts above. 6 out of 7 were right wing.

The hyperbole is ridiculous....we don't know who shot him yet, so we can't just assume it was a left wing perpetrator. It was probably a crazy person, as it usually is in these incidents.

We are living in times of intolerance on both sides of the political divide.

No one deserves to be assassinated for their political views. These acts are the opposite of democracy and run counter to freedom of speech.

Having been politically to the left for the majority of my life (and now politically homeless), I find the intolerance of some of the left wing posters on here totally shocking.

I'm talking about the wider opinion. On other threads on mumsnet and in the wider media there have been some abhorrent posts and opinions.

I'm from England and I can assure you there are lots of us here gutted about Charlie Kirk! We also have a very clear divide between left and right wing politics here and us conservatives saw Charlie as the voice of logic and reason. I've been crying about him today and for his daughters who will have woken up without him this morning. I'm so sad.

That's very unnecessary. I didn't know much about Charlie Kirk before today, but he was obviously influential in right wing circles which is what the OP was referring to.

i follow the director of FBI on twatter and he said an arrest has been made. Nothing further. Another video shows an elderly white man being arrested at the event but god knows.

It's a terrible thing when anyone is killed through mindless violence, particularly when it could be prevented through adequate legislation and enforcement, and a move away from hate speech. BUT - Charlie Kirk's death is a direct result of a culture he advocated for and was paid for doing. He even said himself that having the Second Amendment was worth gun violence. He just believed it would never happen to him.

At the same time, it’s deeply disturbing to see a man who openly championed gun rights being honoured, while children continue to be sacrificed to the grotesque illusion that unrestricted access to firearms equals freedom. To deny the connection between figures like CK and the epidemic of gun violence in the U.S. is an act of extreme naivety and dangerous ignorance.

Presumably killed because of something he said or did, but we don't even know which thing he said or did that motivated the shooter.
Perfectly possible he was killed for not advocating for gun rights ENOUGH in some person's opinion.

If the US tras are anything like the tras in the UK then no, because threatening violence seems to be the tra thing. This is just the next level and because of all the banners I've seen in the UK news threatening violence (decapitate a terf, the only good terf is a dead terf etc etc) it doesn't surprise me at all.

It's a very sad state of affairs imo.
