Right-wing American Pied Piper Charlie Kirk assassinated

I see a thread was started in Chat, but it's obviously more appropriate here. I've been in an American forum where someone wondered if it's of international interest.

Right now it's so early that there's no predicting what will develop, whether it will snowball into something catastrophic. Oddly, after a few hours, it's still not known for sure if they caught the shooter, which is strange, as they supposed knew where the shot came from. I'm already running across some odd conspiracy theories.

So many people on social media confidently saying he was this or that

I don't understand why it even matters? If he turned out to be a democrat that doesn't mean democrats support political violence. Same as if he turned out to be a republican. Why do we think one lone lunatic is representative of a political group?

He could claim to be left wing or anti-fascist or whatever but he certainly doesn't align with anything I believe in. People are saying "he looks like one of you lot" when really they should be saying "we want unity and peace and nothing to do with this".

Edited

It matters because as soon as the shooting happened people like Mace and Trump, among many many others, immediately tried to lay the blame on democrats. Loudly and firmly. Truth matters. They were wrong. Mace has now changed her tune, no more calling for the death penalty.

Robinson went to Utah State university for one semester in 2021.
Fairly flimsey upbringing if it is undone in 4 months.

Unless you are suggesting the electrical apprenticeship programme at Dixie Technical College, Utah is a hotbed of lefty activists which seems unlikely.

A bleak day for left wing politics. Their veil has slipped in no uncertain terms.

I think we can now all agree that the left are a huge risk to society. This cannot continue.

It’s not a left wing issue/problem. It’s Americans obsession with the second amendment and the ongoing’thoughts and prayers’ every time there is a mass shooting. They put their right to own a gun higher than their children’s safety at school.
In the US more under 18’s die from gun crime than any other reason.

Why are early twenty year olds the same as their parents? There’s another thread on someone who is upset their dc have gone to a march.

There’s nothing to say any 22 year old mirrors the older adults’ views.

I was responding to a post stating that he had been brought up conservative and must have been manipulated on campus. I pointed out that a single semester at Utah University seems unlikely to have such an impact.

He had only been speaking of his view that had concerned his family recently.
He was at Utah University over 4 years ago, so unlikely that establishment is the issue.

Probs online influence and not college at all.

Can I ask a question about 2A?

I've read a lot of pro gun arguments by people who lost ancestors in the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust and other atrocities or suffered tyranny in communist Poland, China etc

They argue that the 2A prevents such tyranny from taking place in the US.

Does this argument hold? What do others think? Not decided yet myself.

It’s a weak argument when they have elected an incredibly authoritarian president

My own grandfather fled communist Poland after WW2. I don't really think guns would have stopped the Soviets in that case : many Civilians were armed but the Warsaw Uprising was arguably a doomed endeavour given how huge and better equipped the Soviet army was. Many Poles now, historians and otherwise, think that it was a tragic waste of young lives for an unachievable goal.

Would widespread gun ownership have stopped the Holocaust? Mao? Franco? Mussolini? Pol Pot? Idi Amin?

But he’s not anti-murder. He explicitly said he thinks that school shooting victims are a necessary consequence of having the right to bear arms. It’s not a strawman just because you disagree.

Do you think road deaths are a necessary consequence of having the right to drive? Or should we ban cars because they're dangerous?

That is, in fact, a straw man argument. Cars weren't invented to kill people, but take us from place to place. If people die it's because of accident, drunkeness etc, or sometimes deliberate, but that would be a human fault. Guns were invented to kill. That's all. The right to bear arms is all about the right to kill. You could say buildings can fall down and therefore we shouldn't have buildings.

Maybe I’m reading this wrong but did others know something would happen.

TheJoyOfWriting · 13/09/2025 15:26

The argument that widespread gun ownership would stop tyranny always seems to have the flaw of assuming that gun-owning Civilians wouldn't use their guns to back up tyranny or replace one tyranny with another.

The Jan 6 insurrection was based on this arguably. The people there mostly sincerely believed that Trump HAD been reelected and that Biden was a tyrant. But by all evidence Biden was elected so by trying to force Trump back in they were actually supporting tyranny.

No I’m not saying he was the shooter.
His words indicate he was aware something big was happening.

deckchairmayhem · 13/09/2025 15:34

Anyone think Trump will declare a state of emergency, suspend civil rights, and inaugurate a dictatorship.
His body language sorta looks like he's mulling it over.
The amount of coverage for the assassination of a fairly ordinary, though notable, right wing activist is unreal, unless it's in the context of an up and coming coup d'état.

A bleak day for left wing politics. Their veil has slipped in no uncertain terms.

I think we can now all agree that the left are a huge risk to society. This cannot continue.

Wondering about that veil? I mean, now that it’s been confirmed that, much like with the majority of these types of crimes, it was a white, conservative male from a religious, conservative home, that statement looks a tad silly, yeah. I’d be embarrassed too.

Haven’t seen a lot about his ‘hit list’ on here. Another of his achievements 🙄

Journalist and college professor Stacey Patton goes viral by penning a stunningly powerful statement about how she was on Charlie Kirk’s “digital hit list” and recounting the horror that he inflicted on her

We cannot allow this tragic assassination to whitewash Kirk’s legacy…

“I am on Charlie Kirk’s hit list,” Patton wrote to her 215,000 followers on Facebook. “His so-called ‘Professor Watchlist,’ run under the umbrella of Turning Point USA, is nothing more than a digital hit list for academics who dare to speak truth to power. I landed there in 2024 after writing commentary that inflamed the MAGA faithful. And once my name went up, the harassment machine roared to life.”

“For weeks my inbox and voicemail were deluged. Mostly white men spat venom through the phone: ‘bitch,’ ‘cnt,’ ‘n*r.’ They threatened all manner of violence,” she continued.

“They overwhelmed the university’s PR lines and the president’s office with calls demanding that I be fired,” Patton wrote. “The flood was so relentless that the head of campus security reached out to offer me an escort, because they feared one of these keyboard soldiers might step out of his basement and come do me harm.”

“And I am not unique,” she added.

“Kirk’s Watchlist has terrorized legions of professors across this country. Women, Black faculty, queer scholars, basically anyone who challenged white supremacy, gun culture, or Christian nationalism suddenly found themselves targets of coordinated abuse,” Patton wrote.

“Some received death threats. Some had their jobs threatened. Some left academia entirely. Kirk sent the loud message to us: speak the truth and we will unleash the mob!” she continued.

“That is the culture of violence Charlie Kirk built. He normalized violence. He curated it, monetized it, and sicced it on anyone who dared to puncture his movement’s lies,” she wrote.

“And now, in the wake of his shooting, there’s all this national outpouring of mourning, moments of silence, yellow prayer hands, and tributes painting him as a civil debater,” Patton continued. “But the truth is that Kirk and his foot soldiers spent years terrorizing educators, trying to silence us with harassment and fear!”

“And now the same violence he unleashed on others has come full circle.”

“But what i find especially jarring is the dissonance in public mourning for a smug white man whose life work was actively hostile to certain groups,” she continued. “Kirk spent years demonizing LGBTQ people, mocking gun survivors, spewing racism about Black folks, and pushing policies that literally shorten lives.”

“It is so revolting to watch a bipartisan wave of grief sweep over this hateful racist as if he was a neutral community servant,” she concluded.

This is pure unvarnished truth from Patton. Charlie Kirk did not deserve what happened to him, but nor did his victims deserve the hell that he unleashed on them. If Americans are going to build a more peaceful future for ourselves we must condemn political violence while also condemning the hateful, bigoted rhetoric that made Kirk a multimillionaire.

Where has it been confirmed that the shooter is a conservative? Male and white, from a religious, conservative home yes - but where is it confirmed that he himself had conservative views. I've not seen any official reports of his views - just a heap of rumours - including the latest from unconfirmed FBI sources about him having a transgender partner.

Oblomov25 · 14/09/2025 16:29

I am still very very saddened by this. I loved watching him debate, so skilled, so intelligent. So sad, so very wrong.

I particularly liked his 'you can't change sex, women have xx chromosomes arguments'. I didn't agree with all his views. Certainly not on Trump or abortion but he was so incredibly intelligent and quickwitted and so calm and pleasant in the way that he debated. I loved watching him, even if I didn't agree with everything he said and all his views.

and I knew about his relationship with his wife and I thought they were just an absolutely gloriously beautiful couple and I am so sad that she lost her soulmate at the young age of 31. It's just the whole thing, I find horrific. and I actually saw the video where he was shot in the neck and it's just vile. leaving his two children behind. I just I just can't get over it. I just I'm so very sad about it. Such tragedy.

Every unnecessary death is a tragedy but this death is no greater than the deaths of children in America schools - their deaths don’t get national attention. Flags aren’t flown at half mast across the country, Trump doesn’t attend their funeral or make a plane available to bring their bodies home. They just get the standard message of ‘thoughts and prayers’.

As Americans are obsessed with the second amendment, nothing will change and the same news stories will be repeated each month.

This is the best analysis I've seen so far. Seems the guy was permanently online in gaming communities. An incel living in his basement.

I still can't get rid of the feeling that there's more to this than meets the eye. Why hasn't anyone been arrested? Is it because there are fears this was an organised assassination by much more powerful powers?

I mean, it was on a university campus. There must be CCTV cameras all around, it doesn't take long to view all the people who are visiting that day, and track some of them back to where they came from. I mean the fact they haven't been arrested Anyone is absolutely staggering.
