Is Angela Raynor a liar or is it all anti Labour media bias?

1000 replies

CormorantStrikesBack · 10/03/2024 12:33

I’m well aware how anti Labour a lot of the main stream media seem to be so I wasn’t paying much attention previously to all the stuff about how she should have paid capital gains tax on her house, etc. she was adamant that she didn’t need to.

So it seems like she said it was her main residence so not liable for capital gains tax. But her husband and kids lived in a house a short distance away apparently for the first five years of their marriage which is unusual. A neighbour who lived next to her “husband’s” house said it was the main family home and Angela definitely lived there.

I’ll be sad if she has lied. Always thought she was on the side of the ordinary person. I guess the police/tax man might have a hard time proving anything though regardless of the neighbour’s statement. If all bills, etc were in the individual names there’s no evidence.

Can’t stand the woman but to me just proves she’s like the rest of us although most won’t admit it
if they could get out of paying an tax they would

CurlewKate · 10/03/2024 12:44

I don't know. However-and I don't want to do whataboutery, but seriously? Her making a profit on one house compared to say, for example, Jeremy Hunt....

ThreeFeetTall · 10/03/2024 12:48

I assume this will result in the conservative government better funding HMRC to investigate this sort of stuff?

DGPP · 10/03/2024 12:50

She is brilliant and will bring about real change in this country. A proper investigation will bring about the truth. But it’s nothing compared to the swindling Tories

Oh I’m sure most politicians are doing everything they can to line their own pockets…..having shares in companies, getting payment for “being on the board” of a company which then gets some lucrative contract, etc. it’s all disgraceful. Not sure Hunt has been accused of anything illegal though?

This is just the same old Tory slurs but a rapid right wing press.

Amazes me that Rishi is talking about scrapping the welfare system in exchange for scrapping national insurance...while spinning this crap

Don't we have enough poverty.... poorest country in Europe now and they are talking about scrapping national insurance.....are they living in an alternate reality.

Its time to return our politics back to normality and stop this endless attack on the poorest paid, the sick.... because it wont stop there.

Teddleshon · 11/03/2024 09:20

What’s Jeremy Hung alleged to have done that would be illegal?

Bromptotoo · 11/03/2024 18:34

Was a cock up; bad advice?. No intent to defraud. Can be sorted

CormorantStrikesBack · 11/03/2024 18:39

I don’t think it’s a cock up/bad advice. She either lived a separate life from her husband kids and didn’t lie. Or she lived with her husband and kids and lied. 🤷‍♀️

After the last few years where Tories have lied and profited millions, Angela Rayner is chicken feed. I don't know if she was honest or not, but I'd have her over any Tories. At least she knows what it's like to struggle.

Takoneko · 11/03/2024 19:11

I know someone who has a set up like this. She and her husband married nearly a decade ago.
He owns a home on one side of the city, she owns a flat in the other side, far closer to where she works. Their family home base is his house but her primary residence is her flat where she stays during the week. She doesn’t live a separate life from her husband and child but does maintain her own home. She won’t have to pay CGT when she sells the flat and I see no reason why Angela Rayner would have needed to pay CGT on her house either. It’s not a second home, she didn’t rent it out and she and her husband didn’t buy a place together until after it was sold.

Bromptotoo · 12/03/2024 08:39

While the Mail and other outfits pushing this would have us believe she knew where she lived and lied it's not that straightforward.

Generally, if you own real property , sell it and make a gain it's subject to CGT at the point of sale. There is an exemption for the home you live in. As a married couple you can, at least generally speaking, only claim that for one home.

But, like lots of things related to tax, it's not actually quite that simple. When Rayner married her (no ex) husband they moved into his home. Her brother lived in hers rent free. They were, I think allowed a period of time - months maybe years - to decide their main home before tax on disposal would be payable.

When her home was, eventually, sold there was a gain but things like repairs and improvements can be offset. According to tax expert Dan Neidle the tax on the gain could be as much as £3500 or as little as zero:

iamwhatiam23 · 12/03/2024 09:24

Shes typical Labour, a do as i say not as i do hypocrite! At least we all know that we are voting in selfish, money grabbing liars if we vote Tory 🤷‍♀️. Labour are wolves in sheep's clothing!

Which is why its such a stupid thing for a well paid public official and candidate for high office to reporting wrongly.

That is what I find surprising - not that a politician was being economical with the facts on their tax return but that it was so stupidly done and on income which is more likely that others to be checked.

C8H10N4O2 · 12/03/2024 09:35

The nonsense around MP second homes is largely the fault of voters who want good MPs but don't want to pay for them and the heritage of the Thatcher government who encouraged an expenses free for all so they could pretend MPs were not getting significant pay increases from the public purse.

If they were senior managers in large corporates (which I think is the link to their salary) they would obviously be able to claim expenses for work travel and for long term work travel the company travel group would lease suitable accommodation and transport. That way everything is above board, subject to auditing, declared to HMRC, subject to HMRC limits.

Instead of which we still have the farce of MPs renting their houses to each other to work around the rules on main home and avoid tax by flipping at will rather than genuine change in work location.

CurlewKate · 12/03/2024 09:41

Just goes to show what a dirty vile campaign this next election is going to be.

SomersetTart · 12/03/2024 09:47

It's another donkey field story used by certain sections of the media to focus on small issues and distract from the real problems voters should be concerning themselves with.

CurlewKate · 12/03/2024 12:13

@SomersetTart Exactly.

Bromptotoo · 12/03/2024 15:20

Her problem I think is that neither she or her then husband knew this might be an issue. Both were ordinary people on PAYE including her MP salary. It's not, I think, an issue with a London home and a constituency home. Two places in Manchester.

As Neidle says it's an oddity in the a tax system that's mostly working at an individual level that on this issue married couples have only one property.

That's a really low standard though. Being a liar and cheating the tex system, but not being as bad as the tories in terms of corruption, is a bit shit

Jesus christ. They are ALL as bad as each other - just because she sounds like she is about to have a scrap in the local pub doesn't mean she is immune from taking the piss. Her and Lee Anderson are both sides of the same coin.. trotted out to be the 'voice' of the common plebs.

She is embarrassing and her conduct on twitter is awful.

They really aren't all as bad as one another and her views are as far from Lee Anderson's as it is possible to be.

Compare Angela Rayner's voting record with Jacob Rees Mogg and then see who you think will do most to help the ordinary person in the street.......or the 'common plebs' as you describe them.

Here's Angela being completely not awful on Twitter -

A Twitter user with the name ‘LoveSals’ wrote: “How on earth did Angela Rayner, who left school, pregnant, at 15 with not even one GCSE, rise to the top of the Labour Party? I despair!”

The politician replied: “She worked hard. Despite being written off, with support and determination she turned her life around, per herself forward to serve – and was elected. Too many people are told they’re not good enough and get held back from fulfilling their potential. I’m proud of who I am.”

Well the police don't think she has committed any wrong doing in terms of where she was registered to vote, which in turn suggests she did not dodge CGT when she sold her property.

It is Rayner btw. So many of her detractors spell her name incorrectly. Funny that.

Just another example of politicians and their 'don't do as I do, do as I say' approach to us. All parties are the same and none impress, with the only way to rate them being a scale of less awful!
