Reading the Spectator is a guilty pleasure of mine. But this:

Perhaps Tory MPs will reflect that had they kept their heads they could have had Boris Johnson doing this – and with an outside chance of somehow pulling off a miraculous recovery in his standings.

bangs head on table. The writer doesn't get it. Forget about Brexit versus Remain and Left versus Right. People with the character if Boris Johnson shouldn't be running anything regardless of their politics.

Outside chance?! Fucking hell, Johnson really did have a cult like hold on some elements of the right didn't he?

The Tory party didn't get rid of him because they wanted to. Instead he got chance after chance, and remained in post long after the public had turned on him. They got rid of him when they finally realised that he was now irredeemably toxic.

The polls suggest to me that the public might have noticed that the Tories are irredeemably toxic.

TomPinch · 19/10/2022 09:11

I hate to say it but with Johnson in charge the Tories were competitive in the polls, and that is all they care about.

All the sleaze, the lying, the partying etc and they were still competitive. Very depressing.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 19/10/2022 09:13

They weren't. They got slaughtered in the June byelections, one of which had been a safe Tory seat with a 20k majority.

True, but in July they were polling low to mid-30s. Not great, but a retrievable situation from their point of view and in that sense competitive. They're 10% below that now.

By-elections can't turn on things that aren't an issue a month later

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 19/10/2022 10:01

It's pure right wing copium to think Johnson was going to be able to rally public support again, that the situation was retrievable despite what was obviously going to be an escalating cost of living crisis. Some of them just have this bizarre idea that he was Teflon and that because he pulled off the general election trick once that means he'd be able to do it again. By all means right wingers can make the argument that they might be on track to lose fewer seats under Johnson than they are now, but that's all it is.

This.

They were polling low to mid 30s and falling. Personal opinion polls were through the floor. Not quite the basement levels of Truss but still insanely low.

They may well have got it back from that level but it needed a new leader. They picked the wrong one.

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/10/2022 17:18

That should be ‘personal opinion polls of Boris Johnson’

ScruffMuffin · 19/10/2022 18:42

How much longer can this shitshow continue for? I envisage other ministers resigning in the coming days.

From Twitter

Number of Tory MPs giving up. One texts “what’s the point. Let’s call an election and all go back to our lives”.

ScruffMuffin · 20/10/2022 11:14

I wonder if today is going to be the day.

Things seem to be getting ever more heated in Parliament and sadly Chris Bryant's tofu comment is probably accurate. Like a PP said, if Larry the cat were in charge of No. 10 and the civil servants were left to their own devices, we wouldn't be in our current predicament. The same could be said of tofu.

MidnightConstellation · 20/10/2022 13:40

Today is the day.

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/10/2022 13:42

It Woz The Lettuce Wot Won It.🥬🥬🥬

MidnightConstellation · 20/10/2022 13:43

Very odd. She seemed to have a smile playing round her mouth for much of her statement. She’s a very strange woman.

She really did

ChocFrog · 20/10/2022 14:02

Aaaaand she’s gone.

Wow

jgw1 · 20/10/2022 15:33

Who gets to eat the lettuce?

PerkingFaintly · 20/10/2022 16:02

So the answer was "No, she's only got 6 more days".

@harryjonesxx
cant believe she came, she killed the queen, she crashed the pound, and she left.

InMySpareTime · 20/10/2022 16:09

@PerkingFaintly I think technically she has another week until her successor is chosen, so the 17 days was fairly close.

ScruffMuffin · 20/10/2022 16:52

I can't believe she was doing her silly little smirk during her resignation speech. There's something severely wrong with her.

Croque · 20/10/2022 16:54

They really need to change the rules for guaranteed annual income for ex PMs. You should have to have done a minimum 1 year of service as PM to qualify.

It was as if she was laughing at everyone. Really strange.

I thought it was three months so she won’t get it?

Oh, I hope so!

PerkingFaintly · 20/10/2022 17:10

Yeah, just watched that resignation speech. There's something very odd about her repeated giggling smirk.

Johnson did Duper's Delight, Patel had a very unfortunate Resting Home-Secretary Face. Truss beats them both.

I thought it was just an unfortunate facial expression when people first mentioned it but... it looks more than that.
