To be fair, she only did exactly what she said she would do. Those who should be truly ashamed are those who voted her in to do it. There’s no getting away from the fact that the Tory Party is stuffed full of idiots. It’s not just Liz Truss who shouldn’t last much longer.

I wonder if there will be a change to the party's method of electing a new leader after this debacle? Like returning to the system where leaders were only elected by the parliamentary party.

It was largely the party membership which voted her in and wouldn't listen when Rishi Sunak (not perfect either of course) pointed out that it would all go tits up.

Truss knew what to say on the hustings, but her agenda was totally unrealistic and undeliverable.

Quite. Rishi did tell them how it was all going to go down but they voted for her anyway.

Yes, but Rishi is not one of us, so I could never vote for him.

Wow that map is showing a labour win for where live although only just over a percent in it, always been Tory for 50 years I’ve lived there

Same here. A constituency that has never not had a Tory MP is showing a sizeable majority projected for Labour.

Katyaadlerscoat · 18/10/2022 08:09

Apparently conservative party members have changed their minds and would now vote for Sunak. They should be put in charge of choosing a dessert.

TomPinch · 18/10/2022 08:12

Perhaps the markets will treat Sunak as the dessert, having devoured Truss and Kwarteng.

She even said of Macron I don't know whether he is a friend or foe and she has been Foreign Secretary FFS. Utter hopeless idiot. It's all a game to people like her except it not it's our lives, our country, our futures.

I just can’t understand why the party voted for this ridiculous woman rather than Sunak. Hard though I find it to believe, racism seems to be the only credible answer. So so depressing.

SHOULDN'T, obvs

Katyaadlerscoat · 18/10/2022 08:44

"Ridiculous woman" is right.

I don't think it was related to race at all but the aesthetics of being a high net worth individual in a cost of living crisis. Not helped by the non dom issue. He was also slightly tainted by working for Boris when they wanted a wholesale change of personnel.

Truss was a new face and a gamble which hasn't paid off.

I honestly don’t think it was, or not entirely. She said all the things they like to hear: low taxes; no handouts; bloody French/foreigners etc.

Unfortunately for her and her dwindling core supporters, she finds herself out of step with the prevailing mood in the country and her own party.

There was a time when it would have gone down a storm.

vera99 · 18/10/2022 09:01

Dominic Cummings has described Truss as “about as close to properly crackers as anybody I’ve met in parliament” oh and the "human handgrenade". Quite.

I don't think it was racism. The members who are largely far more right wing than voters or MPs - Truss delivered the kind of budget that suited them.

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2022 09:06

Agree with pp it was more likely to do with more right wing and also the Johnson issue and too wealthy. Plus Badenoch polled well with members due to policies.

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2022 09:07

Cummings us no great shakes when talking about blowing up the economy - he’s taken part too

Agreed - he was the 'evil mad genius' that put lead in Johnson's pencil - he would be in my Nuremberg Trial lineup. That said he's off-the-cuff insider remarks ring true.

He’d be in my line up too but blaming him for crashing the economy is a bit of a stretch.

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2022 09:13

He’s a key factor in the Brexit win - if you think Brexit wasn’t a good idea he’s there too

Admittedly just doing his job but still. Who knows how it would have gone without the very effective Leave campaign

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2022 09:15

Plus partygate of course

Still he’s got his blog. Not a fan though

Lonelycrab · 18/10/2022 09:31

Cummings was always just a mercenary I think, no real morals, just followed the money and influence and made sure he did well out of it. He even said himself Brexit might not work. It worked for him though and that’s all that really mattered.

red4321 · 18/10/2022 09:32

I know Cummings is fairly odious but I think he may be an evil genius. He has a better grasp of politics than most of the cabinet. A disruptor in the mould of Elon Musk.

Same for George Osborne. Another person who was loathed by the public but was savvy when it came to politics.

Not saying they're likeable (they're not) but they're willing to challenge the status quo. Perhaps not always a bad thing if the public wants real change?

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2022 09:35

Brexit he just did a good job and hit the right lines for a win. I doubt he cared for it beyond let’s see if I can win this.

Partygate was motivated by emotion imo and in the end succeeded. As one person goes an impact in British politics is pretty high. His aim was always chaos though which doesn’t help us.

vera99 · 18/10/2022 09:37

If only he could have built a bloody time machine with all that talent. Latest Cold War Steve.

Cummings is an idiot.

He's a disruptor who likes to wreck things, in the belief that it's the current system (any current system) that's holding back Utopia.

But like most egotistical wreckers, he doesn't have a realistic concept of what the replacement will look like – never mind how to get there.

So we're just left with his wreckage.

It's Student Union politics – complete with handing out all the posts to his mates.
