Truss must go now. So refreshing to listen to MPs asking difficult questions in a civilised manner and accepting Jeremy Hunt's confident and reasonable replies. I suspect there will be dark times ahead but the Tories could do a lot worse than him.

Agree, he’s nailing this, calmly and patiently.

truss will be the shortest tenure prime minister in uk history I think?

Jeremy Hunt reminds me of when we bring interim head teachers in to steer failing schools....

I'm starting to wonder about this. Or the world has ended and we are all living in a computer simulation run by Dominic Cummings

😂After a few drinks I'll be driving to see if I'm drunk.

Andrew Marr pouring a proverbial huge bucket or ordure all over her head just now on LBC no pity shown.

Well, it's 14 more days now. <pedant alert>.

I was hoping for "Will Liz Truss really last only 17 more minutes?" as a title!

Reminds me of when we need a POA to stop a mentally unfit or fast-declining relative having access to bank accounts or making rash decisions against their own interest.

Not much blue left on that map.

Disappointing. I was really hopeful that the day had arrived when the Scots nats were a bigger party than the Tories.

Blossomtoes · 17/10/2022 18:56

Wow, this used to be Major’s seat and one of the safest in the country - it’s now predicted to turn red. My mind’s blown.

Depends on how much tactical voting for the Lib Dems there is.

For example, in 2019 the Tories narrowly won Brecon & Radnor from the Lib Dems. The map has the Lib Dem vote going backwards and the Tories holding the seat because of that. I think it's more likely that the Lib Dems will win it.

There will be plenty of other seats like that.

TomPinch · 17/10/2022 19:14

It also has Tiverton & Honiton as a Tory hold with Labour beating the LDs into third. Again, unlikely, as it's currently a LD by-election gain.

The Lib Dems came second in a whole swathe of rural south of England seats in 2019 and poll much better in those places than nationwide. The predictions of the Tories being reduced to say 20 seats would be premised on a) moderate Remainer Tories switching to the Lib Dems and b) Labour supporters voting tactically to get the Tory incumbent out. In theory the Tories could lose them all, as that's how FPTP works.

Topseyt123 · 17/10/2022 19:20

I also thought she looked very unwell, and as though she would rather be just about anywhere else. It really was a shocking sight.

I know it is very largely self-inflicted and that limits the amount of sympathy I am prepared to express, but she needs to step down. How close is she to a full on breakdown?

For the sake of the country, and of her own mental and physical health (I wish her no personal ill) she needs to go.

QuebecBagnet · 17/10/2022 19:25

I can see Hunt becoming PM before long

He may even be the de facto Prime Minister now, behind the scenes.

by a looong chalk

current record is 118 days. I think Truss is only on day 40 now.

He is. The men in grey suits have told Truss to do as she’s told. That’s why she looks as if she’s being held hostage. She needs to call a GE and walk.

I think in the interest of fairness the mourning period for the late Queen should be taken off the total.

Apparently (according to ch4 News) the One Nation tory grouping of MPs went to see Truss, surprisingly she was given an easy time as she looked so destroyed.

also rumours that Hunt is meeting Sunak this weekend.

One Nation tory group?

One Nation as in England?

Colderthanever · 17/10/2022 19:40

I was just watching truss, as hunt is talking, but on silent, just watching truss, and it’s disturbing , just watch her, it does look like she’s medicated or has been drinking. She’s sitting very prim, clasping her hands, looking down, blinking a lot, but almost sleepy, a strange look on her face, like she’s in her own head. Penny keeps nervously side eyeing her and you can see looks uncomfortable and concerned.

something very serious is going on behind the scenes.

if you’ve ever seen a deeply abused person be abused again when they just sit still, look down, blinking and take it, because they can’t do anything else, they are incapable, that’s what truss is like. Somethings been triggered here , something quite serious I think.

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/10/2022 19:40

That's the one @jgw1.😉

let's call it an even 30.

Colderthanever · 17/10/2022 19:42

Well hunt is ruling out being pm, says he doesn’t want it and neither does his wife and kids..but I think he does wish to be chancellor.
