Can I draw your attention to this please ?
A village of 400 people in Oxfordshire, the government want to house 1200 migrants in an old RAF barracks nearby. No consultation and no infrastructure to support.
Before anyone accuses me of being racist, my family make up negates that.

I lived in Bicester when the site was used by the MoD. Whilst there may have been drunken scuffles, the Military police were often out in Town to support.

The women of Piddington are raising concerns over not being able to walk alone after dusk, feeling intimidated, concerns over children playing outside. None of these were concerns I heard during my 5 years living in Bicester. Im certain these would have been discussion points at some point if they were concerns.

Im interested to understand what the proposal from Piddington is on where the 125 men should be housed if not near them? RAF Barnham are about to experience similar and any protests their have been described as Right Wing.

Also interested to understand what the people of Piddington are expecting to achieve from their referendum today.

Article in the Express;

In Piddington, a campaign group of female residents, calling themselves the Women of Piddington, wrote a letter to all the female MPs in Parliament in the past few days highlighting their own security fears - so far not a single female Labour MP has responded.

Only four women MPs have answered the call, with both Reform UK female MPs, Suella Braverman and Sarah Pochin meeting with villagers yesterday in a powerful show of solidarity. Gina Perkin, 37, who has three young children, welcomed the arrival of Ms Braverman and Ms Pochin when she met them with her youngest Zac, aged 10 months, but she did not hold back in her rage against those who have so far stayed silent.

"We should not have to beg the women who represent us to listen to us, stand alongside us and support us," she said.
"And when this situation goes wrong, which it will, we will remember who listened, who acted and who chose to turn away when the woman they serve were asking for help. And we will hold them accountable.

"The system is broken. No one voted for this. We are fighting for our children and their future, and we need to do what we can. We should not be treated as collateral damage in this experiment of theirs."

Fellow mother Alice West, who has three young daughters, said four female MPs acknowledging the campaign was a start, but she very much hoped "more women in Parliament, from across the political spectrum, will now listen to us and add their voices too."

Really? How typical of a Labour politician.

Why are they not writing to their own MP? It’s pretty standard for an MP to not work outside their own constituency. Braverman obviously not needed in Fareham.

I have family in Piddington. The LibDem MP visited and poo-pooed concerns.

They are desperately sad that their way of life is going to change. Would you go for a country walk or take the dog out when there is a large number of undocumented men free to roam wherever they like? Would you allow your dcs to go to the playground? Walk home from the bus stop?

As an aside, I wonder how council tax will be assessed now? Because a house in Piddington must now be worth about 50p.

I think I’ve answered these questions on this thread already. Scary men are sadly everywhere, we must all take precautions.

Presumably the people of Piddington voted for this MP in the knowledge of their views on this though? It was really inevitable that a government watching protests against use of hotels would look to empty barracks.

No it wasn’t, Labour campaigned on smash the gangs. Ie not having arrivals.

Besides Piddington is Lib Dem. Not that they’re helping much either.

1250 not 125. Can you not see the difference between RAF men and these men?

By the looks of it Braverman doesn’t want asylum seekers housed in hotels, town centres or in the countryside. So what are her actionable solutions?

They certainly didn’t promise no arrivals, how could they, but the NCA says law enforcement (ie ‘smash the gangs’) is having an impact and the evidence is in the numbers.

You've partly answered your own point- military police were needed. There will not be military police or often be any police at all to support in these areas. In the area near Barnham you barely see the police, ever.

And those men went on leave to their families, or had wives with them. The asylum seeker camp will be full of men from brutal cultures who hate women, with zero women folk. That is precisely why there were not really concerns then but are now.

And where should they be housed? Indeed. We need border controls, less benefits and deportations.

So only partially smash the gangs. They should have said. They also didn’t mention barracks at all which is an issue for them.

My apologies for the typo it should have read 1250. May I suggest redirecting your anger and re-reading my message. At no point have have I suggested there's no difference. In fact I have made it clear the issues raised NOW were not experienced when I lived locally

Why do you ask? I'm sure you despise anything a Reform MP advocates.

Labour, the LibDems and Greens are committed to building social housing for these immigrants so logically a 1,000 new council houses for them on the Piddington site is the left wing solution.

If anyone genuinely thought ‘smash the gangs’ meant ‘immediately reduce all irregular migration and remove the need to house people already here and seeking asylum’ then yes, I suppose they would be disappointed.

I don’t recall barracks being mentioned in the Labour manifesto but it was a policy when Jenrick was Home Secretary https://www.gov.uk/government/news/asylum-seekers-to-be-accommodated-on-surplus-military-sites so hardly a surprise. Were you opposed to it back in 2023?

Using more barracks is a Labour thing, which means Piddington, Braintree and other places will object.
MC areas won’t want mass accommodation either.

They’ve got a few more years, numbers fluctuate we’ll see how it goes.

Lemonraider · 15/09/2026 16:27

By the time these 1250 men are approved they will have a local connection to Piddington.

They can apply directly to Cherwell District Council (the local authority for Piddington) for homelessness assistance. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/asylum-dispersal-grant-funding-instruction/funding-instruction-for-local-authorities-asylum-grant-2025-2026

https://housing-rights.info/news/asylum-accommodation-and-local-connection-its-complicated

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2004/19/section/11/data.html

If a refugee at the Piddington site is facing eviction due to an asylum approval, they should not try to navigate the council bureaucracies alone. They should immediately contact Asylum Welcome, an Oxford-based charity that serves the entire county. They specialize in forced displacement and can legally challenge Cherwell or Oxford councils to ensure the individual is not left homeless.

I don’t ’despise anything a Reform MP advocates’ on principle no. I make a judgement depending on what anyone says, not what flag they fly. I don’t think Braverman is advocating anything here though is she?

From what I’ve read their own MP supports the government so I’m not sure they’ll make much traction there.

I’m assuming they appealed to women MPs in the hope they might understand the concerns due to women inheritently being more vulnerable to sexual violence, but many of those MPs couldn’t even describe what a woman is, so I agree it was futile from the get go.

I’m not sure how it’s ’a Labour thing’ when there were multiple sites used by the Conservative governments - Napier, Penally, Manston and Wethersfield.

2020/21 https://www.gov.uk/government/news/an-inspection-of-the-use-of-contingency-asylum-accommodation-key-findings-from-site-visits-to-penally-camp-and-napier-barracks

Naturally the opening of new sites will be under this government, which happens to be Labour. But do you imagine that a Conservative or Reform government would not have done the same? Last year, Zia Yusuf advocated for military bases to be used, and Kemi Badenoch has also called for camps to be built (though she’s vague on where) https://news.sky.com/story/where-can-asylum-seekers-go-if-they-cant-be-housed-in-hotels-13415282

Asylum seekers have moved to the first large-scale asylum accommodation site in the UK as part of the government’s pledge to reduce the use of expensive hotels.

I read the article. Yes, she wrote to the Home Office, on behalf of her constituents - that’s exactly what MPs do.

I’m not sure why you’re being so anti, you seem to think she has a solution so what do you think it is?
