Can I draw your attention to this please ?
A village of 400 people in Oxfordshire, the government want to house 1200 migrants in an old RAF barracks nearby. No consultation and no infrastructure to support.
Before anyone accuses me of being racist, my family make up negates that.

Surely the village managed fine when the barracks was in use by the military? What’s the difference? RAF bases have their own infrastructure. Your sewage system, roads etc will be no more affected than they were then.

PS it’s perfectly possible to be racist even if you have family from an ethnic minority background.

BeSharpHelper · 21/08/2026 11:36

Well hotels are out the of question now so where can they put them? A military base sounds like a good solution. I can see why you’re not happy though , I wouldn’t be thrilled either , but nowhere is currently suitable according to the people who live , well, everywhere really.

Seriously?
You cannot see a difference??

Ablondiebutagoody · 21/08/2026 11:38

They have been given pamphlets asking them not to rape any locals, so it will be fine.

Would you be ok with the same barracks nearby to you?

TeenLifeMum · 21/08/2026 11:48

Our army barracks was used for Ugandan refugees in 1970s. A fantastic piece of our town’s history. I understand the nervousness but nimby ism isn’t helpful. There’s a need and an identified solution. Would you support it if you didn’t live there?

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 21/08/2026 11:49

Site A is actually an old MOD storage site. It's never been used by the RAF and the only buildings on it are old 1940's warehouses full of asbestos. New accommodation will be needed for anyone sent there, it is thought this will probably be some sort of pod on an existing open concrete pad.

Agreed. I had a family justify their use of the n word because they couldn’t possibly be racist as they have Indian relatives. 🤯

EmeraldRoulette · 21/08/2026 11:50

@dreamingofgoodhair I know all about it

I don’t live there

I understand how terrifying this is. Used to live near one of the hotels and that was bad enough. Are you there? I’m so sorry.

you might get lucky as we’ve had a couple of sensible threads about this this week, but generally you’ll just be gaslit and hear all sorts of nonsense.

oh, and I’m also not white and it’s no insulation against being called a racist believe me. Some people are obsessed with colour. And that’s not you and I!

I don't live anywhere near there and I totally understand the concern.
1200 men who need a leaflet telling them its not OK to rape wandering around a very small village with fuck all amenities?
Nope.

@TeenLifeMumon this, would you say yes ok for your area now?

I have lived close to an army base in the countryside. Squaddies are not known for being quiet neighbours who are respectful of women and never cause any issues when they’re off base. But we house them there anyway.

You are right about a solution. However, pp have a point about these large numbers of men - they're not families or single women. These needs better management, but what's to be done?

Ok good to know re squaddies. Are you ok with the Piddington version which is over 1000 males waiting for asylum?

These are not squaddies... are you being purposefully obtuse?

This should create plenty jobs for the local area.

I think reusing existing facilities for short term housing of asylum seekers while their applications are processed is a good idea, yes.

People have objected so strongly to the use of urban hotels for this purpose that they have tried to murder the occupants by burning the buildings. The government has responded by making it policy that hotels will no longer be used.

Where would you like to see asylum seekers housed while their applications are processed? Are you proposing to increase public spending to build new facilities somewhere? Where? Anywhere but near you?

I would like to see them kept on base if that's where they have to be.
Securely away from women and children.

Would you be up for working there, given that recently a woman employed in an asylum centre was murdered by being repeatedly stabbed in the head by an inmate - a man totally at liberty who followed her to the station. There is film of him dancing after committing the murder.

The RAF will have had their own Dr's/medics and there will have had NAFFI shops, there own security and military police and the men and women will have been gainfully employed so not hanging around causing trouble and will havelnow the culture and language.
Whereas the 1200 men dumped their few will speak English none will understand the culture and laws of the uk, will all be unemployed and if they follow pattern will hang out in gangs taking over public parks and harass the locals. They will need to use local Dr's and shops.
These are two completely different cohorts one of which the government thinks needs leaflets telling them not to RAPE, SEXUALLY ASSAULT and/or SEXUALLY HARASS women and GIRLS.
If you honestly can see why this is unacceptable then thats a you problem.
All of these men need to be sent back home immediately not housed and fed by this country

I presume that's meant to be a joke, but I have posted on other threads about the incidents of staff being attacked that I remember. The ones that I remember will be the tip of the iceberg.
