Can I draw your attention to this please ?
A village of 400 people in Oxfordshire, the government want to house 1200 migrants in an old RAF barracks nearby. No consultation and no infrastructure to support.
Before anyone accuses me of being racist, my family make up negates that.

Surely the village managed fine when the barracks was in use by the military? What’s the difference? RAF bases have their own infrastructure. Your sewage system, roads etc will be no more affected than they were then.

PS it’s perfectly possible to be racist even if you have family from an ethnic minority background.

Firstly the barracks/site hasn’t been used by the RAF for the past 15 years, although other organisations have used it for training such as schools. Secondly it was designed for up to 650 people, not over 1,000. Lastly do you think that undocumented young men from overseas are likely to have the same level of language, integration and understanding of cultural norms as RAF personnel? Might some of these men pose more of a threat to vulnerable members of the community than the RAF would?

Remarkable how the leafy Shires now suddenly care about the illegal migration problem now all of a sudden...

Didn't hear any noise when they were being housed elsewhere in the country, as they have been, in great numbers, for years.

Whatifitallgoesright · 21/08/2026 12:22

When ex-military bases were first touted as a solution I assumed they would be secure. There would be existing fences and security features. Of course they should be detained and not allowed to wander the local area. We have no idea of their criminal status and they are here illegally. They should be treated as prisoners - they should be in prison if successive governments had built any. If you can't see the dangers in housing 1000+ immigrant men from cultures that clearly don't view women as equal human beings you are so hopelessly naive I lose all hope for you.

I think reusing existing facilities for short term housing of asylum seekers while their applications are processed is a good idea, yes.

People have objected so strongly to the use of urban hotels for this purpose that they have tried to murder the occupants by burning the buildings. The government has responded by making it policy that hotels will no longer be used.

Where would you like to see asylum seekers housed while their applications are processed? Are you proposing to increase public spending to build new facilities somewhere? Where? Anywhere but near you?

They should not be allowed to claim asylum.
They are economic migrants who have travelled through multiple safe countries to get here.
Every single one of these men should be taken off the boats and flown straight back to their home countries, no housing, no benefits and no asylum claims end of.

hugasaurus · 21/08/2026 12:25

It’s very easy to be enlightened about it when it’s not going to affect you. I doubt many of us would be jumping for joy in OP’s shoes, no maybe how much we might claim otherwise on an anonymous internet forum. I think of myself as generally quite a left wing person, but 1000 mostly young men from cultures with very different attitudes towards women and girls moving to our small village would give me pause too.

Labour are going to end up continuing to fall further into the hole they dug for themselves when they carried on with the narrative that any talk about immigration = racism, and then wondered why people were gravitating towards the more right-wing parties. Keir Starmer realised that too late, let’s hope Andy B doesn’t make the same mistake 🤷‍♀️

Our army barracks was used for Ugandan refugees in 1970s. A fantastic piece of our town’s history. I understand the nervousness but nimby ism isn’t helpful. There’s a need and an identified solution. Would you support it if you didn’t live there?

That was completely different though, they were generally families and were invited here as Amin wanted them out of Uganda. We offered sanctuary and rightly so. Can’t be compared with undocumented young men from all over the world. If Piddington was being used to house genuine refugee families from war zones I don’t think there would be so much hostility.

They are not here illegally. They have claimed asylum - the only way to do that in this country is to arrive here and make a claim. We have no mechanism for claiming asylum other than in person. That is a failing in our system.

They are only here illegally if their claim is refused and they evade deportation.

Be realistic. Most of the posters in that vein would actually prefer them floating face down in international waters or dead in the country they have left.

If there are still posters keen to have the barracks near to them such as the pp then ok, I’m sure Labour would oblige.

But most will be a no thanks.

He's accelerating it due to his policy of let's spend more money by housing them in expensive, inappropriate rural areas.
The labour party is the party of envy and spite.
And before anyone accuses me of being a nimble I live in a city with hotels used for these men and all of my opinions about them come from the way I've seen them behave

The right to seek asylum is internationally recognised as a basic human right.

Your assertions show your immense privilege at living in a country which is stable and has democratic governance.

If you lived in other circumstances you would not be so quick to strip people of basic rights.

Why don't they come in by plane... with all their supporting documentation?
Cheaper than by boat... likely to arrive alive. Claim asylum on arrival.

They don't because then we would actually know who they are, where they are from and what they have been up to in their homeland.
They are not claiming asylum... they are here for economic reasons and sexual predation.

So where do you want them to go while it’s worked out what country they are from and a plane found for them? It’s not as simple as picking them up off a small boat, saying ‘where are you from?’ and then putting them straight onto a plane.

I hope he does... then we can get in a government who actually puts britain first.

Toomuchtroublethesedays · 21/08/2026 12:33

From what I have read, and heard, the problem is not the use of military bases but the lack of security because these men will be allowed to come and go freely and that means they are likely to be in the village much of the time. I think having huge numbers of men wandering around your small village would be intimidating for most people. Giving them a pamphlet asking them not to rape or assault anyone isn't reassuring, given past experience.

Lugol · 21/08/2026 12:34

Why are you assuming racism? That's very reductive.

Maybe it's the fact that these undocumented men are from a culture that sees rape of women as a justifiable punishment? Or is it now racist to object to rape culture? 🙄

Call people all the names you want, it very quickly starts to mean nothing.

They aren’t ‘putting’ new barracks anywhere. They are reusing existing facilities. Your argument is facile.

BendoftheBeginning · 21/08/2026 12:36

Paganpentacle · 21/08/2026 11:55

I don't live anywhere near there and I totally understand the concern.
1200 men who need a leaflet telling them its not OK to rape wandering around a very small village with fuck all amenities?
Nope.

Edited

There’s some pretty unsavoury attitudes to women in the military, too. Soz to burst your bubble, but they’re all much of a muchness. It’s fair to ask questions about how moving in a load of people will affect the people already there, but giving squaddies a free pass is incredibly naive.

panomara · 21/08/2026 12:36

The proposed settlement in Piddington is replicated in other less salubrious areas all around the country. The use of the army barracks is a clever move in a leafy Oxfordshire village instead of using a variety of HMOs and repurposed hotels in other areas.

I always said it, it is only when the privileged few are affected will an issue become contentious and a light is shone on the issue.

But back in reality, where the law says that people can only claim asylum on arrival in the UK, and that’s what is happening, and is not likely to change, where would you see these men housed?

Every single uk embassy is UK soil and asylum can be claimed there.
Back to my earlier point if they are genuine asylum seekers where are the women and children?
Why didn't they stop in the 1st safe country.
Why come to the uk with a completely alien culture and language that you don't speak instead of one that has the same culture and language as your home country?
They are at best economic migrants and should be sent back immediately.
The worst thing labour did was repealed the law that the tories brought in that removed their right to claim asylum
