‘A 2% Wealth Tax on assets over £10 million could raise up to £24 billion per year.’

Or it could just result in yet more wealthy people move abroad and result in a smaller tax take - thats a pretty likely outcome of simplistic policies.

Nameychangington · 15/04/2025 18:32

You need to ask MN to move this to the petitions board or they'll delete it, you're not allowed to link to petitions or crowdfunders

Why not? Are you the 0.04% population who it will affect?

Agree 100%

Shwish · 15/04/2025 18:35

Well I've signed. "Wealthy people" can leave if they want to. The fact is if they're REALLY wealthy it doesn't really matter. They'll hold significant assets in the UK that should be taxed. It's not like they can take the land with them. It stays here, they can leave. They could still be made to pay that tax from whichever tax haven they run to.
Really the people you DONT want to leave are the ones whose wealth IS coming from their income. So I guess bankers /.football players/ actors etc. THEY move, their tax moves with them. But generally they're not the super rich multi millionaire types.

Meadowfinch · 15/04/2025 18:38

I won't sign either.

The top 10% of PAYE earners already pay 60% of the tax. People with those sorts of assets can simply move abroad for 7 months a year. The idea that they will simply roll over and pay yet more tax is simplistic and naive.

It will result in a lower tax take, and is a bad idea.

The petition isn’t to tax those people it’s to tax the 0.04% of the populations wealthiest people

So you're happy for disabled people to die due to the cuts?

Because that's what's going to happen.

This people are already taxed on the income they make on that wealth. If you drive them out you lose that tax revenue too, and the jobs that go with it.

But it's not asking for higher PAYE it's asking to tax WEALTH. Which means ASSETS not income.

TizerorFizz · 15/04/2025 18:44

@QuestionableMouse Do not use emotional blackmail. It’s not the fault of those who pay the most tax that you feel hard done by. Or presumably don’t work. If anything it’s the fault of those who pay no tax at all. Or very little. Millions of people. We seem to never learn that a jealousy tax backfires. We need well off people paying tax. We are already seeing them go.

If the government introduces a tax that sounds good but actually results in a smaller tax take then it’ll result in further cuts.

And the people who pay the least tax (proportion lally) are the richest! The Duke of Westminster paid NO tax on his billions. None.

QuestionableMouse · 15/04/2025 18:39

I don't think it's a linear choice between disability benefit cuts and a bonkers wealth tax. If your wealth tax results in reduced tax revenues overall, how does that help disabled people?

LoyalAquaHiker · 15/04/2025 18:56

I agree jealousy taxes don't work, so taking money off people because you're jealous they can't work is stupid. It will have horrendous consequences for the individual but also for society. Dd currently receives DLA but when it's time for Pip I can't afford to pay for the private healthcare she currently needs because the NHs is shit. She will be a danger to herself and society and either end up in prison or a home or long term mental health care facility. She is not the only one by a long shot.

Either the NHS and social care will need to step up and do their fucking jobs or the prison system will become overwhelmed. Either way it will cost far more money than what is currently being paid out.

LoyalAquaHiker · 15/04/2025 19:00

QuestionableMouse · 15/04/2025 18:28

Would you mind saying why?

Oh come on you know why.
The alright jacks will get it in the end. They've got the pretty little house they bought because they got lucky with age and health but what they don't realize is that the reason their local council isn't cutting their hedge anymore is that they're spending ALL their money on social care. And that's where all this money will go when disabled people end up homeless or at risk because of poor mental health.

LoyalAquaHiker · 15/04/2025 19:03

The problem with change.org is I don't think they can force parliament to discuss anything. You have to use the .gov petition site. Fucking labour, the conservatives must be loving this. Who knew they'd out Tory the Tories. .

towelonfloor · 15/04/2025 19:06

Meadowfinch · 15/04/2025 19:06

I'm old enough to remember the 70s when the likes of Keith Moon, Shirley Bassey, Michael Cane, the Rolling Stones and many others all left the UK. Driving our talent abroad won't help anyone except the countries they move to.

The Duke of Westminster paid no inheritance tax (but does pay income tax). The lack of IHT was because the estate isn't his, He can't sell, it is held in trust.

Perhaps you want to target trusts specifically. The govt could act to limit the use of trusts if it chooses to.

Yellowshirt · 15/04/2025 19:08

Why don't they look at the people who got the houses when they were cheap and are now worth something like 10 times more.
Tax them abit more.

Also stop allowing inheritance of these houses when people die if the children already own a home.

MrsWobble3 · 15/04/2025 19:13

How do you propose to measure wealth for the purpose of your tax? As someone has already noted, the Duke of Westminster doesn’t personally own the family fortune so he won’t be included. Family farms might be though. Not sure how many have the cash to pay more tax though based on the reaction to IHT changes
