I've signed it.

If the cuts do ahead thousands of people are going to be badly affected (me included due to long COVID which has left me chroniclly unwell)

@WeylandYutani so I would look at the beer tax analogy

CaptainFuture · 21/04/2025 22:06

WeylandYutani · 21/04/2025 21:55

If you are a high tax payer, then you are not going to become destitute if you had to pay more.
Please stay humble though. You could be us one day.

How much of other people money is enough to keep taking from them though?

WeylandYutani · 21/04/2025 22:06

Jinglejanglejangle · 21/04/2025 22:05

@WeylandYutani so I would look at the beer tax analogy

And what do the people in that analogy live on after paying for the beer?

Jinglejanglejangle · 21/04/2025 22:11

Well they chose to go for the beer and are happy with doing so until they feel that the person paying the most tax is suddenly getting bigger ‘savings’ even though it’s actually a lower percentage, it’s just a higher pound number.

CaptainFuture · 21/04/2025 22:16

WeylandYutani · 21/04/2025 22:06

And what do the people in that analogy live on after paying for the beer?

They're not being forced to drink the beer!

WeylandYutani · 21/04/2025 22:18

CaptainFuture · 21/04/2025 22:16

They're not being forced to drink the beer!

so how would that analogy apply to real life?

Sorry, I struggle with analogies anyway (autistic).

Julen7 · 21/04/2025 22:19

WeylandYutani · 21/04/2025 22:06

And what do the people in that analogy live on after paying for the beer?

It’s an analogy explaining the tax system and how people leave when they perceive it to be unfair. What people live on isn’t relevant here.

£400 in total, so for rent, utilities, food, clothes etc?
Or £400 a month after that's all been paid
Or £400 a month after rent alone?

£400 for food, bills, disability requirements, travel, toiletries, household items like cleaning products, wifi, debts, phone bill, pet costs.

My gas and electricity is £120 a month. My groceries are around £30 a week. Council tax is £20 a month, so is water. Phone and Internet (which you need, because you're expected to job hunt for a set number of hours a week) is £8 + £15. I have a credit card at £60. Cat food is £40. Oh I'm £23 overdrawn.

There is literally nothing I can cut back. I could stop eating I guess, but there's nothing else I can cut. I could also re-home my cats but it would absolutely break me. They're the only thing that keeps me going some days.

@QuestionableMouse you asked for job options, I gave you one and having picked on a number of posters you haven’t responded to my suggestion. Why not?

Same. I could not live on £400. It is simple not possible. I would end up with court orders and balliffs, and no way to pay them. What a life, eh?

Start your own business. No boss, can set your own rate, do what you can do. You said you worked so you have skills worth employing.

GreenTurtles3 · 21/04/2025 22:54

Ti7ch · 21/04/2025 14:03

And you haven't reported those people you think are abusing the system because...? Chances are they're claiming for something you don't have a clue about

Extended family members who are quite open about how they play the system.

Jinglejanglejangle · 21/04/2025 22:56

@QuestionableMouse oh is it too much of a risk? Isn’t it worth it for the more money you would make as opposed to the money you get from us that take that risk give you? Or is a bit more comfortable where you are??

going self employed is always a massive risk. And some people can not manage with all the admin and things that come with it. I know I couldn't.
OP might not be able to cope, or she might not have a proper busniness plan that would make her any money anyway.

Unfortunately it is not an option for me.

Yes yes it is! And yet you expect others to do it and pay the tax

Jinglejanglejangle · 21/04/2025 23:25

@QuestionableMouse why not?

QuestionableMouse · 21/04/2025 23:26

Jinglejanglejangle · 21/04/2025 23:25

@QuestionableMouse why not?

I tried last year and couldn't manage the admin.

Honestly @QuestionableMouse I would not be answering too many questions. I used to and was helpfully informed that most people are not asking in good faith. They are just asking to criticise you and punch down.
If you can't do something, you can't do something. It is nothing to do with them and they have no right to ask.
What you can and can't do is between you, your GP and the DWP.

Yellowshirt · 22/04/2025 00:10

WeylandYutani · 21/04/2025 21:17

Sorry but I don't believe you.
Greggs wages are available online. Managers are on £19ph (£35k a year) Your 17 year old nephew is not on £22ph. No one at Greggs is on that much.

@WeylandYutani . I guarantee you he is normally on £11 per hour. Yesterday he got £22 an hour.
Anyone who thinks the minimum wage in this country is helping is mad. It just puts everything we buy up. They need to half energy and fuel , cut taxes and benefits and get people working.

QuestionableMouse · 22/04/2025 00:21

Yellowshirt · 21/04/2025 15:08

Classy woman you are hiding behind your computer swearing at people!!!
Stop hiding behind Covid. I worked throughout the whole of it . I didn't get a penny and I'm still having to pay higher taxes.
Get back to work. Are you saying due to Covid you can never work again?

Edited

Ah @Yellowshirt

Thoughts on those jobs? Ta

I don't no what experience and qualifications you have.
I don't want to work 60 hours a week getting up at 4am some days but needs must if I want to own a house one day.
Look on the local council website. They have lots. Litter pickers , Gardeners, binmen, drivers right upto management.

The problem is if the PIP and LCWRA go people will be needing to get back to some sort of employment
