Should my husband call his daughter during our honeymoon abroad?

We are on our honeymoon in Corfu. 9 year old step daughter is on holiday in Mauritius with her mum who has asked for a brief call for our step-daughter. My question is whilst this doesn’t really bother me, should step daughter be able to manage without a call for a week (we only left on Saturday). Is this about my husband’s ex partner wanting to interrupt our break. Or am I reading to much into it, I don’t have children so appreciate I may not have the best perspective on holidays and what is usual.

Why shouldn't he speak to his daughter?

Your attitude towards this doesn't bode well for a happy marriage.

FloofTrousers · Today 09:18

It's totally normal for a child to want a bit of contact when apart from their parent. Don't read anything more into it.

violetcuriosity · Today 09:18

Yes, this is normal. He is her Dad first, your husband second. Forever.

No, it's about a 9 year-old wanting to talk to her dad while she's apart from him. HTH.

Solasum · Today 09:19

She is a young child, and if she wants to speak to her father she should be able to do so.

Respectfully, he hopefully loves her more than he loves you, and if he wants to be a good father, he needs to continue to be involved in her life.

RosesAndHellebores · Today 09:19

Of course he should call, she's his daughter, he's her dad. Nothing will ever change that.

Buzzer3555 · Today 09:19

I think it would be a nice thing for your husband to call his daughter. What harm can it do?

Tryingtosleep23 · Today 09:19

Well it obviously does bother you enough. I'd be expecting him to phone his daughter every day at that age to be honest. Why do you assume it's the ex wanting to interrupt your honeymoon and not just a daughter who is missing her dad and wants to speak to him.

pearlsclutchedhard · Today 09:19

Of course this is ok, she probably wants to talk to him about her holiday. I can’t imagine many parents of a child that age going a week without speaking to them (if they are an involved parent)

Melsy88 · Today 09:19

You're reading WAY too much into it.
Of course he should speak to his daughter - I'm surprised it's only once in a week. How much contact do they normally have?
You should be encouraging lots of contact with her. The girl is probably feeling a bit confused by all of the changes and needs reassurance more than ever right now.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · Today 09:19

WTF?!? She’s nine. Of course she should be having a phone call with her dad when he’s away for a week.

ladyb2gw · Today 09:19

Really! I’m sure his ex couldn’t care less. A kid wants to speak to her dad

Lomonald · Today 09:20

He is allowed to speak to his Dd she should be able to chat to her dad if she wants to, don't set your marraige up as some sort of hierarchy against his child.

Askandyforcompo · Today 09:20

Of course a 9 year old will want to talk to her dad if she's missing him.

rocklivia · Today 09:20

It could well be the ex trying to insert herself and her child into this special time for you. Been there. Rise above it and keep quiet about it.

mysticbob · Today 09:20

He’s her dad. Of course she should be able to speak to him. You’re being weird.

backformoreofthesame · Today 09:20

He could call her every day if that’s what the child prefers and he probably should call at least once more than ex suggests

keeping it simple

children worry that with a new love dad won’t love them anymore
if that thought festers they then try and “prove it” and that can lead to dreadful behaviour

ao if you want an easy life - make sure that child doesn’t feel displaced

thisismeithinkorisit · Today 09:21

Normal op. I'm sure if this were your joint child at hoem with grandparents they'd also want contact.

Remember it's also interrupting the Mom's holiday, so I wouldn't assume bad intentions.
How is the Mom generally with you?

Meadowfinch · Today 09:21

Yes of course, why ever not?

Dsd is dealing with the fact her daddy has a new woman in his life. She will need reassurance that she is still loved and his first priority.

RedToothBrush · Today 09:22

Why is this even a question?

Why does it threaten you? Why do you feel in competition with his daughter? Why do you want him all to yourself? Because it's your honeymoon isn't a good enough answer.

Seriously. Have a word with yourself. This is a child. He is a father. He shouldn't just dump her because he's busy or has more important things to do. Ever.

Mapleunicorn · Today 09:23

Of course she wants to talk to him. He doesn’t stop being her dad just because you are on honeymoon. I would expect a 9 year old to potentially want more than one phone call in a week.

Especially given you’ve just got married. This is a big change in her life and she won’t be emotionally equipped to fully understand it yet. So likely wants a bit more reassurance that it doesn’t change anything between them.

Appreciate you saying you don’t have kids, but this is completely normal. I would be alarmed if he didn’t want to speak to her when away for a week.

Bringemout · Today 09:23

DH calls Dd everyday when he travels, it’s perfectly normal for her and him to want to have a catch up. She’s just a kid, this is hardly going to ruin your honeymoon. Honestly I often think step parents get a hard time on here but she exists and she is going to be a part of your husbands life. I wouldn’t want a man who would turn down talking to his own daughter while he’s out of the country for over a week.

Bogstandardname · Today 09:24

Of course he should call her. He will always love her no matter what. You will always be a close second so perhaps you should have a rethink about your attitude towards her.

Uricon2 · Today 09:24

Her father has just remarried and she's 9 years old, it is a big deal. However good reltionships are, can't you see that a child might want a bit of reassurance she still matters by talking to her Dad?

Weeellokthen · Today 09:25

Dsd mother shouldn't even have had to ask!!!!!
