Should my husband call his daughter during our honeymoon abroad?

Luxe50 · Today 09:16

We are on our honeymoon in Corfu. 9 year old step daughter is on holiday in Mauritius with her mum who has asked for a brief call for our step-daughter. My question is whilst this doesn’t really bother me, should step daughter be able to manage without a call for a week (we only left on Saturday). Is this about my husband’s ex partner wanting to interrupt our break. Or am I reading to much into it, I don’t have children so appreciate I may not have the best perspective on holidays and what is usual.

Why would you want to be married to a man who was happy to ignore his daughter’s needs?

And whether the 9yo could manage without her Dad for a week is irrelevant, why should she in 2026 when it’s a very simple matter to do a quick call?

Dwrcegin · Today 09:41

Oh my word! She is NINE years old. She's his first priority, she should be able to speak to him at any time.

Hayley1256 · Today 09:42

This is normal, my DD10 would want to speak with me or her dad (my ex) if she was away with one of us for the week.

I have a 9 year old and would really want to talk to them if not seeing them for a week. This is normal and the sign he’s a good parent. Shocked you’re even questioning it.

AnneLovesGilbert · Today 09:43

If you were away from him for a week would you want to speak to him or would you be perfectly fine having no contact with him at all?

Constantinoodle · Today 09:43

You are reading way too much into this. It’s your honeymoon, you’re not on Mars. Why should a 9 year old miss out on a quick catch up with her father for your honeymoon? The fact that you are even asking this is strange, OP.

TinyGingerCat · Today 09:44

Bloody hell you have married a man with a child and you are asking this question after you’ve married him. Adults who are jealous of children need to do a bit of self reflection. You used to be a kid you don’t need any of your own to understand a child might want to speak to her parents when ever she wants and especially when there is a huge change like this going on. You better get used to the idea that any child you have with him will not be his first otherwise this is not going to end well.

JustAnotherWhinger · Today 09:44

Does he go a week without talking to his DD at any other point? Presumably he wouldn’t dream of it so why would being away be any different?

His chatting with her shouldn’t change just because he’s away.

MidnightPatrol · Today 09:44

If you find this problematic behaviour, the next ten years are going to be wild.

Wowzers. Not sure you're ready to be a step mum. On my honeymoon i called my then 10 year old daughter every day and my husband did the same with his 11 year old daughter. You are too paranoid. Even if it is some 'plot' by his ex wife, who cares? Be confortable in your relationship and encourage your husband and his daughters relationship.

I mean it wouldn’t be weird to me to call or message a friend or another family member on honeymoon, never mind a child! It’s just a holiday, I really don’t see the big deal.

FlatCatYellowMat · Today 09:46

I wouldn't go a week without at least texting my youngest, and wouldn't go a day without talking to my eldest (the couple of times I've been away for work, we still spoke every day - except when I was actively in the air, and I still sent messages then!)

gotmyselfintoapickle · Today 09:46

It really doesn't bode well for the future that you are even questioning this to be honest.

LondonLass2026 · Today 09:47

You're worried about your husband taking a quick call from his daughter while you're on honeymoon, yet it's ok for you to be posting on Mumsnet?

In the time you wrote this, he could have chatted with his daughter.

Just the irony of it.

KitKatKathy · Today 09:47

My 11 year old goes away with her Dad for one week each year (we are not together). My DD messages me about 10 times a day and facetimes me on multiple occasions. This is not some elaborate ploy to annoying my former husband, my daughter likes to tell me about her day and wants to hear my voice.

You really don't sound ready to be a step-parent, if you would be happy for a child to miss their Dad so you can pretend you married a man without a past.

bettyrubble99 · Today 09:48

She loved him first.
He loved her before you.
It's a phone call. Go plait your hair or something and leave him to it.

Switchnow · Today 09:48

You don’t have children but presumably know the DD and your DH’s relationship reasonably well, so you’ll know that most 9 years olds who have good relationships with their parents don’t want to go a week without talking to them. Plus she’s on holiday so will want to share her excitement.

Respectfully, you’re posting about this from your honeymoon and not talking to him about it. Doesn’t seem the greatest start to a marriage.

Glitterballofdreams · Today 09:48

I’d expect a lot more contact than one quick phone call per week. Your husband shouldn’t feel uncomfortable contacting his child, for worry that you will kick off. You’re definitely reading way too much into it, and overreacting, in fact I’d be pushing for the contact because at 9, especially as a girl, things can become distant between dad and daughter.

rumplestiltskin88 · Today 09:50

I’m surprised it is just one call that has been suggested . This actually sounds to me like her mum is being thoughtful and not trying to bother you by requesting what is probably the very bare minimum. I just think you are coming across quite needy and immature and paranoid here. Sorry if that’s offensive but this is a 9 year old child we are talking about having a brief phone call with her parent .

mindutopia · Today 09:50

I don’t tend to call my 8 year old if I’m away, but I think it’s a perfectly normal thing to do. I do message lots with my 13 year old.

I think if this is the sort of thing that is getting you worked up you are in for a mighty long road. 😂 It does not get easier from here. Wait til she is 14 and in a mood for a week or he’s needing to leave a night with you to go collect her from a party at 10pm.

bloominghell76 · Today 09:51

Op isn't going to come back to this thread

U53rName · Today 09:51

You didn’t marry a carefree man w/o children, OP. Are you aware of what you’ve signed up for? If a phone call has your nose out of joint, all I can say is…buckle up.

bluescarf · Today 09:52

The child is missing her Dad. Your DH is probably missing his DD.

Just chill out. I would imagine ex wife is having too much of a fabulous time in Mauritius to be coming up with ideas to scupper your honeymoon! Unless there’s a big back story …

5128gap · Today 09:53

Oh OP. This is one if those portent of doom moments. You've literally just married a man with a child and already you're having problems with the child's involvement in his life and suspecting his ex of trying to cause issues.
A call from father to daughter during a period of absence is the most normal thing in the world. The fact his absence is also your honeymoon makes no difference.
Please don't be 'that" second wife, constantly engaged in a competition with his child. A decent man will always prioritise his child, and you want your husband to be decent, surely?

ChateauProvence · Today 09:53

Of course it is normal what a weird post. Your honeymoon doesn’t trump his little girls needs - get over yourself and I hope you are kinder to her in real life

Naurrr · Today 09:53

Hed be a shit father if he didn't want to speak with his kid more than once a week.
