Should my husband call his daughter during our honeymoon abroad?

We are on our honeymoon in Corfu. 9 year old step daughter is on holiday in Mauritius with her mum who has asked for a brief call for our step-daughter. My question is whilst this doesn’t really bother me, should step daughter be able to manage without a call for a week (we only left on Saturday). Is this about my husband’s ex partner wanting to interrupt our break. Or am I reading to much into it, I don’t have children so appreciate I may not have the best perspective on holidays and what is usual.

She’s 9 , she’s his daughter - he’s away for a week - of course she wants to speak to her Dad

Im in my 50s - when I go away I call my Dad every other day usually just yo have a chat

Peonies12 · Today 09:54

Of course a dad should speak to his daughter if she wants to. And it’s none of your business

TreeDudette · Today 09:55

WTF?? This is totally normal! I spoke to my (admittedly autistic) daughter every day from our honeymoon. DH and I made sure I had a little time to call her that was convenient for everyone. She also texted me now and then and I texted her with photos and chit chat. You don’t stop being a parent because you are on honeymoon you know!

Oh dear op, you are in for a shock

hes her father of course he should be phoning her and he shouldn’t have been asked to do
it he should have done it automatically

vodkaredbullgirl · Today 09:56

🙄it's just a quick phonecall.

Westfacing · Today 09:56

I honestly thought this would be about an adult daughter who had a problem and her dad felt he should phone her - not a nine year-old!

Sounds like you haven't spent much time with this young girl, otherwise you'd know that a week is a long time when you're that age

moppety · Today 09:57

Of course he should! My DH was away for the weekend and called to speak to girls as they wanted to speak to him. How does a brief call with his child interrupt anything?

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · Today 09:57

At nine my dad was calling me every night before bed and most nights I’d chat to my step mum as well. She was a hair dresser and at that age I thought it was really funny to ask her if she had shaved anyone’s head. She is a child so yes she should speak to her dad as often as she wants, honeymoon or not.

Whoops75 · Today 09:57

We rang home every day to talk with out child and check-in. YABVU, there are 24 hours in a day!

dahliadream · Today 09:58

Gosh this question has blown my mind. Of COURSE a nine year old child wants to speak to her dad, to be honest I would be expecting a short call daily never mind just once during the week?

ebfwtf · Today 09:58

If you can’t manage for 20 mins while he has a phone call with his little girl, why should a 9 year old be able to manage a week of not speaking to her parent?
Also you refer to her as “our” stepdaughter - that is your husbands child. He hasn’t given up responsibility by marrying you.

You sound very insecure.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · Today 09:58

Of course he should be contacting his 9 year old daughter during your holiday, that is completely normal and you are reading too much into it.

you need to change your attitude here quickly or you will end up with a lot of bad feelings yourself or ruin his relationship with his daughter

TaffyTabby · Today 09:59

Agree with PP
you’re in for a shock
I’m a step mum, and a mum.
Yes children want to speak to their parents.
I’m guessing you don’t have your own kids otherwise I think you’d understand the pain of being parted.
When you married this man, you married in to being an adult in her life. Try to have some empathy for her.

Also - why are you making decisions for your husband and okaying his calls - this comes across as rather controlling?

And I would advise to give your husband’s ex as much grace as possible eg assume she is simply doing the best for her child, rather than have a paranoid position that she is doing everything to bother you.

scoopsahoooy · Today 09:59

Very unusual for a 9 year old to go a week without speaking a parent (that they're otherwise usually in contact with), IMO. I find it quite odd that you're questioning it - that's his kid.

OldrNWisr · Today 09:59

If you’re already questioning his level of contact with his 9 year old daughter and making it into a competition for his attention and priority, it does not bode well for the future of your marriage.

ThisMauveTurtle · Today 09:59

Yes, he can phone his daughter any time he wants to.
You should be allowed to make a phone call whenever you want to too

Bestfootforward11 · Today 09:59

This is a child wanting to speak to her dad for a few mins. Her dad has just married and gone away with his new wife, I’d imagine the child is needing reassurance and connection with her dad. Going forward you need to expect your DH to put his child first in the same way you would if it’s your child.

TotallyFloored · Today 09:59

Another one to say I wouldn't go away for a week (or even a weekend) without calling my kids (although I do have 100% residency of mine ). I would automatically call mine to speak to them, check they were ok, confirm that I was etc...
It may be different depending upon how many days they are with their mum vs dad but I'd have expected him to have called. Perhaps if they went weeks without seeing their dad it may be an odd request for a call, but perhaps the daughter is excited and wants to talk about her own holiday. I'd have expected that he would have called though.

diddl · Today 10:01

This is a wind up isn't it?

scoobysnaxx · Today 10:02

Didion · Today 09:17

Why shouldn't he speak to his daughter?

Your attitude towards this doesn't bode well for a happy marriage.

This.
what the hell?
of course he should speak to his daughter!
your post is a massive issue op.
Are you sure you want to be a step mother? Doesn’t bode well for her does it?

Calliopespa · Today 10:02

Can't believe I am reading this OP and hope this is a wind-up/reverse.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · Today 10:02

One phone call isn’t a massive disruption but even if that was the intention of the ex the best thing you can do is be very chill about it. Say a quick hello to his dd yourself on the phone and tell her you’ve both been looking for souvenirs to bring back for her so she knows you and her dad are keeping her in mind.

Winnie27101981 · Today 10:03

I call my children every day if I am away without them or vice versa. They are currently away with their dad and we speak everyday and in October I am away for 10 days with just my partner and again we will speak to our kids (teenagers) every day! Perfectly normal!

You sound a bit jealous tbh! A quick call each day will not distract his attention off of you!

purplecorkheart · Today 10:04

I think you are going to be in for a rough marriage op if this is an issue. Of course he should be calling his daughter as much as she wants. He does not stop being a parent just because he remarried.
He will also need to talk to the child's mother at times. Co-parenting does not stop because he is remarried. If he is a decent father (although I have my doubts if he had to be asked to phone his daughter) then his child will always be his first priority.
