Support for a mum of a late potty trainer

Hi all,

DD is 4 and is showing no signs of being ready to train yet which is concerning me as she’s due to be starting school in September. We’ve had a few failed attempts in the past, and she just doesn’t seem to be getting the hang of knowing when she needs to go. The doctors and HV have been supportive and keep giving me all these different tactics to try but to no avail and since I’ve recently had another baby we’ve resorted back to nappies again.

Please don’t come for me, I know she’s late to be trained! Just looking for some support, tips, and to know I’m not the only one still having to change a 4 year old x

I have just looked up Dr Kennedy’s method. I was wondering if it would help my 18 month old grandson who has been introduced to a potty. He is too young for potty learning. We need to keep a potty training approach for him. However I think for @DearDog96 you could for sure reframe what you say to your daughter using some of Dr Kennedys ideas. Stay positive.

The advice that you should also consider is watching for those tell tale signs. I would also keep DD very close by. Put away your phone so you are really on top of those signs. You have got this!

Keep heart @DearDog96 my dd is three and been potty training for a year she often has wee accidents at home but has always come out of nursery clean- no accidents.
I think a lot of children know what to do and are fine at school if all the other children are using the toilet too but hate being told to use it by their parents or my daughter does anyway!
As long as your daughter understands the concept I bet she will be fine at school.

I have indeed. Still having a fair few accidents but determined not to give them back to her during the day

Keep up and remember accidents are normal for most potty training children. It's a very rare one that "gets it" after just a day.
