Do I just go to a&e? No idea what’s wrong

Hi all. I have a 6 month old boy. This is my second baby. He’s been such a good baby. Fusses over his teeth, but he sleeps well and anytime he cries a cuddle will soothe him instantly.

since 6am this morning he hasn’t been ok. He woke up screaming. Finally got him back to sleep around 7. He felt warm but no temperature. Wet nappies. Irritable a day. Then since 1 o clock he’s just not stopped. Screaming, red face, constant tears. Heartbreaking cry. I’ve never heard him cry like this not even when he was ill with his chest and needed an inhaler. He won’t calm down. He wears himself out and passes out.

hes tensing his body, holding it completely straight if you lift his legs he freaks. I attempted to bath him - made him worse. He’s so hot but keep checking temp and nothing. Calpol did nothing. Gripe water did nothing I thought maybe he’s constipated. He has a nappy rash we’ve been applying cream to but it doesn’t look bad enough to warrant this reaction.

over the last two hours if you hold him on your chest and pat his back saying shhh he will fall back asleep but the moment you move or stop he instantly wakes screaming

i breastfeed him and he’s had some but he’s just not him

but how do I go to a&e and say my baby won’t stop crying? I’ve looked at every page, checked his body. I don’t know what’s wrong with him
i dont want to find childcare for my tired toddler. Get there, be dismissed by them make him worse. Make him endure blood tests or whatever for nothing but I just don’t know

any advice please

Have you called 111 for advice?

plart · 28/02/2025 19:20

Go to A + E now.

He's too young to tell you what is wrong and needs examing as he is obviously suffering.

EdithGrantham · 28/02/2025 19:20

It does sound a little like constipation, has he had a bowel movement today and have you started solids given that he's 6 months?

Call 111 first . They can give you an out of hours gp appointment if that is more-appropriate.

amylou8 · 28/02/2025 19:21

Call 111, they're really helpful.

I haven’t. I’ve never really had a good experience with them. And no obvious symptoms.

Call 111 they will get you a face to face appointment or tell you to go to A and E.

He hasn’t had one today. But one yesterday. He’s breastfed so not a one a day baby.
we have started him on purées and a few finger foods. Just puree this morning though as he’s been so unsettled

I’d go straight to an and e, rather than hanging on the phone for a 111 gp to call you back, who is likely to advise an and e anyway.

RolaColaLola · 28/02/2025 19:24

Go to A&E, I don’t like the sound of the rigid back and screaming when legs are flexed. Does he have a rash?

Morechocmorechoc · 28/02/2025 19:26

We saw a hospital doctor who said go home just virus and then refused as so much screaming so they sent us to paeds and there we stayed for a few days. If you know this isn't normal illness go to hospital and see paeds.

NerrSnerr · 28/02/2025 19:31

I would go to a&e. They always say with babies and very young children it's better to be cautious

AllIwantedwasanMOT · 28/02/2025 19:31

Take him to A&E and tell them you are worried. I would ask them specifically to rule out sepsis. Inconsolable crying is a sign of serious illness. The screenshot below is from the NHS website - you'd be well within reason to take him to A&E.

Strip him off and check everything - especially toes in case it's a hair tie that's constricting a toe.

Has he had a recent vaccination? Prolonged crying is a known reaction to DPTT.

Have you given pain relief?

Otherwise 111 will assess and advise - or Urgent treatment centre/ A&E if you prefer and he has been crying continously for more than 1hr.

user1471538275 · 28/02/2025 19:34

Oh and do a quick check in his mouth to see if he's cutting multiple teeth at the same time - if there is real redness/points of teeth coming through it could be this.

HarryVanderspeigle · 28/02/2025 19:35

You need a doctor, so whether a&e or 111 do something now. In my experience of babies, 111 always said to go to a&e anyway and even sent us an ambulance once.

BananaBubbless · 28/02/2025 19:36

I would wonder if something he’s ate has upset him stomach or maybe something you have ate has via the breast milk.

Just tell them exactly what you wrote in your post.

NestaArcheron · 28/02/2025 19:37

Go to A&E, they're always happy to see young babies

Iamaneggman · 28/02/2025 19:38

Take him to A&E.

He is little his only form of communication is crying and he’s trying to tell you something is wrong. Make sure he is seen and assessed properly.

good luck - I hope he is feeling better soon X

SummerInSun · 28/02/2025 19:38

Also a vote for A&E. You know your baby and what's normal and what's not. One of my DC had a hernia at 3 months old which needed emergency surgery. There are things that can happen that can cause sudden pain and need a doctor.

I was going to say this - one of mine was the same and only settled on his front. I would say if you’re worried it won’t hurt to visit A&E.

Cinai2 · 28/02/2025 19:40

Yes, A&E or 111 but they’ll tell you yo go to A&E with a baby that little. An A&E doctor told me that 3+ hours of inconsolable crying is an A&E case.

AlwaysCoffee25 · 28/02/2025 19:42

To add - I remember taking my second and feeling silly but was seen and he was observed for a few hours because they shared my concerns - it was a cold but lots of mucous meant he was struggling to breathe at times.
