Do I just go to a&e? No idea what’s wrong

Hi all. I have a 6 month old boy. This is my second baby. He’s been such a good baby. Fusses over his teeth, but he sleeps well and anytime he cries a cuddle will soothe him instantly.

since 6am this morning he hasn’t been ok. He woke up screaming. Finally got him back to sleep around 7. He felt warm but no temperature. Wet nappies. Irritable a day. Then since 1 o clock he’s just not stopped. Screaming, red face, constant tears. Heartbreaking cry. I’ve never heard him cry like this not even when he was ill with his chest and needed an inhaler. He won’t calm down. He wears himself out and passes out.

hes tensing his body, holding it completely straight if you lift his legs he freaks. I attempted to bath him - made him worse. He’s so hot but keep checking temp and nothing. Calpol did nothing. Gripe water did nothing I thought maybe he’s constipated. He has a nappy rash we’ve been applying cream to but it doesn’t look bad enough to warrant this reaction.

over the last two hours if you hold him on your chest and pat his back saying shhh he will fall back asleep but the moment you move or stop he instantly wakes screaming

i breastfeed him and he’s had some but he’s just not him

but how do I go to a&e and say my baby won’t stop crying? I’ve looked at every page, checked his body. I don’t know what’s wrong with him
i dont want to find childcare for my tired toddler. Get there, be dismissed by them make him worse. Make him endure blood tests or whatever for nothing but I just don’t know

any advice please

A&E
I wouldn’t bother with 111

Motheranddaughter · 28/02/2025 19:45

111 are a total waste of time IME
I would go to A and E

mummysmagicmedicine · 28/02/2025 19:45

Please go to a and e x

Definitely straight to a&e.

Cantmakemymindup2 · 28/02/2025 20:06

It could be an allergy to a new food. Delayed reactions can take up to 72 hours to show symptoms.

Lostworlds · 28/02/2025 20:10

My little one was like this, I phoned 111 who arranged an out of hours doctors appointment. When I was there the doctor seen how inconsolable my baby was and sent me straight to a&e. We didn’t have to wait, triaged quickly and into a room so he could be checked and get tests. He had Covid. No idea how he caught it as no one else in the family was sick, he didn’t show any signs of it, no coughs etc and sadly all we could do was give calpol/ ibruprofen and wait it out.

I agree with others, I would phone 111 and seek their advice first but if you’re not keen then go to a&e. You know your baby and know it’s not how they usually are.

AlwaysCoffee25 · 28/02/2025 20:11

let us know how you get on OP.

thegrumpusch · 28/02/2025 20:11

If you've just started weaning then perhaps it could be to do with that - allergies, constipation, reflux. Both of mine has reflux and were inconsolable much of the time. But as others say, do get an urgent medical opinion.

bridgetreilly · 28/02/2025 20:15

Just go to A&E. If you can leave toddler with someone, please do, but if you can’t, then take them with you. A grumpy night for a toddler is annoying, but a seriously ill baby takes precedence.

GroovyChick87 · 28/02/2025 20:15

Go straight to A and E. I find with 111 they either just tell you to go to A and E or you're still left feeling worried because they haven't actually been seen. I once waited for a call back from them and child had been seen in A and E and admitted to the ward before they rang me back 4 hours later. Don't hesitate to get your child seen, this is what they are there for.

OCDmama · 28/02/2025 20:18

When my son was 3 weeks he got viral meningitis. He was a bit crabby during the day but nothing noteworthy - but I saw that his hands were weirdly pale.

Couldn't get him to sleep when it was bed time though, tried between 7-11pm when out of nowhere be got a massive temperature. We were at a&e by 12, admitted for 8 days.

I'm not saying your son has the same - but the symptoms/behaviours weren't hugely worrying until the temp, and the situation got serious very very quickly. I think if your gut says something's wrong start with calling 111.

pearbottomjeans · 28/02/2025 20:22

Depends on area - here, A&E would be the waste of time and 111 would be far better - OOH GP appt which is within the hospital, so it's just like A&E with no wait time and in the right place if need to be admitted. Do whatever will get you seen fastest OP - hopefully paeds A&E far quicker than normal A&E!

Foxgloverr · 28/02/2025 20:24

It could be anything but this is what my DS was like when he has an ear infection and burst ear drum. No way of knowing until they looked in his ears.

A&E seems sensible at this point. 111 is usually a waste of time in my experience.

SquashedGrape1 · 28/02/2025 20:26

Go to A&E he's very young. You won't be criticised.

EUmumforever · 28/02/2025 20:27

I took my children to A&E several times when little, always worthwhile and paediatric team always happy to check them out. Take your toddler with you and go to a&e

BobbyBiscuits · 28/02/2025 20:27

The body tensing and uncontrollable crying are strong symptoms. I hope he gets better soon, but I'd take him to paed A&E.

Zanatdy · 28/02/2025 20:27

As it’s been all day and crying so much I would say A&E too. With babies and young children they always say no harm in bringing them in for a check up.

Hwi · 28/02/2025 20:28

Motheranddaughter · 28/02/2025 19:45

Dangerous waste of time too.

ParrotParty · 28/02/2025 20:29

I'd take him, my main concern would be ear infection, but at that age its too young to tell and not worth the risk of hoping its something minor.
And even an ear infection may need antibiotics or drops.
A and e would much rather see 10 children unnecessarily than miss 1 bad case and 6 months is too young to guess at whats wrong at home.

YesHonestly · 28/02/2025 20:30

Go to A&E. You know your baby best.

They are ALWAYS happy to see babies this young, even if it turns out there’s nothing wrong.

Dueanamechange2025 · 28/02/2025 20:32

How is his @Snowtimex7 ?

Cadenza12 · 28/02/2025 20:32

Had this with my baby. Totally out of character. Took her to the GP in the morning turned out to be a burst ear drum. I'd definitely get some medical advice tonight. Have had good experience with 111.

WimbyAce · 28/02/2025 20:36

I agree possibly ear infection or throat infection but could be anything. Our 111 were hit and miss when we used it when they were babies. I think twice though they sent someone out and then got referred on to OOO GP which would have been quicker than sitting in A&E. Depends what yours is like though. I think you def need to do something as now it is the weekend.

Apollo365 · 28/02/2025 20:37

Agree, A&E. Could be something going on internally that needs attention. Good luck OP. Hope they get him sorted quickly x

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 28/02/2025 20:37

He needs to see someone, an out of hours doctor or a and e. Might be an ear infection or something that's very painful but easily sorted
