Do I just go to a&e? No idea what’s wrong

Hi all. I have a 6 month old boy. This is my second baby. He’s been such a good baby. Fusses over his teeth, but he sleeps well and anytime he cries a cuddle will soothe him instantly.

since 6am this morning he hasn’t been ok. He woke up screaming. Finally got him back to sleep around 7. He felt warm but no temperature. Wet nappies. Irritable a day. Then since 1 o clock he’s just not stopped. Screaming, red face, constant tears. Heartbreaking cry. I’ve never heard him cry like this not even when he was ill with his chest and needed an inhaler. He won’t calm down. He wears himself out and passes out.

hes tensing his body, holding it completely straight if you lift his legs he freaks. I attempted to bath him - made him worse. He’s so hot but keep checking temp and nothing. Calpol did nothing. Gripe water did nothing I thought maybe he’s constipated. He has a nappy rash we’ve been applying cream to but it doesn’t look bad enough to warrant this reaction.

over the last two hours if you hold him on your chest and pat his back saying shhh he will fall back asleep but the moment you move or stop he instantly wakes screaming

i breastfeed him and he’s had some but he’s just not him

but how do I go to a&e and say my baby won’t stop crying? I’ve looked at every page, checked his body. I don’t know what’s wrong with him
i dont want to find childcare for my tired toddler. Get there, be dismissed by them make him worse. Make him endure blood tests or whatever for nothing but I just don’t know

any advice please

Your poor child is in pain and you're posting for advice on here? For goodness sake go to A&E or call 111.

Nice to see such a good grasp of the thread there Madcat - the op updated quite some time ago.

Shruggs · 01/03/2025 14:46

Oh, OP, I’m glad he’s been seen. Hoping all is OK and it’s just a virus or constipation and resolved easily.

StrangeSenseOfCalm · 01/03/2025 17:12

Hope all is well op

Excellent comprehension you have there! Op took her child to hospital some time ago. Pop down off your high horse, and try reading the thread.

Hope the doctors have seen you and you have some answers.

mintjim · 01/03/2025 17:31

You did the right thing taking him. He's too small to risk anything. Well done mum.
Hope he feels better soon.

Snowtimex7 · 01/03/2025 17:40

update. We are home
they don’t really know. They think it’s a viral infection or possible chicken pox but on a good note his temp is down, heart rate down and blood pressure we are down so they sent us home. Keep monitoring and they’ve given us 72 hour access to the paediatric team so they will help over the phone or if we really want to go back we can

he’s still so sad. But we have happy hours and then he gets bad again but so far temp hasn’t gone above 38 so I think we are breaking out of it
thank you all so much for your comments and best wishes. I’m so glad I went. Awful night sleep but i would never of been able to sleep here anyway he was so bad.

Don’t ever hesitate when it comes to a little one - you absolutely did the right thing. They can’t tell us how they are feeling so it’s up to us to make the call and fight for them to be seen. Hear to many horror stories where parents feel guilty about wasting A&E time. So glad they are coming out the other side now. Sending love and hoping you have a better nights sleep, although you will to snot be checking in with them all night.

That's good news @Snowtimex7. Sounds like he's on the mend. I'm sure you must be relieved.

Lollipop81 · 01/03/2025 18:08

So glad he is getting better. Just shows you should always go with your instinct, you know your child x

Nonrienderien · 01/03/2025 18:12

Brilliant update OP & thanks for sharing 🤗

AlwaysCoffee25 · 01/03/2025 18:17

Good news OP - I hope he continues to improve.

Nonrienderien · 01/03/2025 18:18

OP you have no need to share. If you do think it's relevant going forward do you think it's worthwhile letting people here know the bigger picture. I 100% understand if it's not something you'd like to share xx

GeometricGillian · 01/03/2025 18:20

You trusted your instinct OP, I’m really glad you’re home and he’s not as poorly. Never doubt the fact that you know your baby better than anyone else.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 01/03/2025 18:35

Ahhh, I'm so glad your darling boy is getting better!

Gcsunnyside23 · 01/03/2025 18:50

Hope he's doing ok and you get home soon

She is home.

Threeboystwocatsandadog · 01/03/2025 19:04

Awe, I so glad he seems to be improving and it’s good that you can contact paeds if you need to. My older two breezed through baby and toddlerhood with barely a sneeze so it was a total shock for me when ds3 caught everything going. I had quite a few A&E visits with him pre school. It’s so scary when they are ill.

Badgerandfox227 · 01/03/2025 19:08

Really pleased to read your update and hear that he’s ok and your home. Hopefully you all manage some sleep tonight x

0psiedasiy · 01/03/2025 19:12

Happy to hear your home and he’s recovering. Little ones do this to us sometimes! Have been their several times you just have to do what you think is best x

Get yourself to A+E

AchillesAndPatroclus · 01/03/2025 19:39

@Snowtimex7 I don’t want to scare you, just wanted to relay our experience as my dd had exactly the same symptoms at around 7 months, and it was a bit of a mystery for us too.

A couple of weeks later, she ate some egg and had an allergic reaction. When we had a panel of allergy tests done afterwards, it turned out that she was also highly allergic to the food that we had given her the night that she was very unsettled. Not enough to cause a full on reaction (tiny weaning amount) but clearly gave her whole system trouble.

i hope it was a one-off for your little one but just something to maybe watch out for.

Jesus Christ, the OP posted last night, went to A&E and has since updated that they’re home!
