Do I just go to a&e? No idea what’s wrong

Hi all. I have a 6 month old boy. This is my second baby. He’s been such a good baby. Fusses over his teeth, but he sleeps well and anytime he cries a cuddle will soothe him instantly.

since 6am this morning he hasn’t been ok. He woke up screaming. Finally got him back to sleep around 7. He felt warm but no temperature. Wet nappies. Irritable a day. Then since 1 o clock he’s just not stopped. Screaming, red face, constant tears. Heartbreaking cry. I’ve never heard him cry like this not even when he was ill with his chest and needed an inhaler. He won’t calm down. He wears himself out and passes out.

hes tensing his body, holding it completely straight if you lift his legs he freaks. I attempted to bath him - made him worse. He’s so hot but keep checking temp and nothing. Calpol did nothing. Gripe water did nothing I thought maybe he’s constipated. He has a nappy rash we’ve been applying cream to but it doesn’t look bad enough to warrant this reaction.

over the last two hours if you hold him on your chest and pat his back saying shhh he will fall back asleep but the moment you move or stop he instantly wakes screaming

i breastfeed him and he’s had some but he’s just not him

but how do I go to a&e and say my baby won’t stop crying? I’ve looked at every page, checked his body. I don’t know what’s wrong with him
i dont want to find childcare for my tired toddler. Get there, be dismissed by them make him worse. Make him endure blood tests or whatever for nothing but I just don’t know

any advice please

Thank you all
I was just scared I would be shooed away for being over anxious. And my husband wasn’t sure. But something doesn’t feel right.
bloods so far look normal but his temperature isn’t dropping. They also gave neurofen. Doctor saw him and everything appears normal including urine but he agreed something isn’t right. Waiting on peds

Have they checked the tonsils? This sounds very similar to first time my LO got it.

Hope he is feeling better soon

Would the out of hours GP not be the obvious thing to do?

You've done the right thing to take him in OP, well
done. Babies can get ill very quickly and doctors would always rather see them to be on the safe side. Hope he's ok and you get home soon.

Frostynoman · 28/02/2025 21:37

Well done for going in OP, you’re in the best place and I hope your baby is feeling better very soon

JaxKennedy · 28/02/2025 21:39

Please go to A&E, I am a nurse and we are more than happy to check babies observations, run some tests and offer some reassurance, you know your own baby, I hope everything is alright.

TwinklyMintHelper · 28/02/2025 21:39

Go with your gut reaction.
You know your child better than anyone else.
If you think something is wrong and he is acting out of character, go to A&E.
Medics would rather see a potentially ill baby, than not.

Jeeekers · 28/02/2025 21:39

My experience is they Usually take baby issues as priority.
Your DC symptoms reminded my of mine at few months old, got him to A&E as it was a weekend. While waiting …, he was wailing & crying as had been all day then he was quiet … his eardrum had burst, golden fluid & some blood. Then moments later a happy baby.

It was the pressure behind the ear drum giving him agony all day (but not fever). Antibiotics prescribed.

SquashedGrape1 · 28/02/2025 21:44

Well done OP. Hope you get it sorted quickly.

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 28/02/2025 21:44

Hope he is ok OP💐

0psiedasiy · 28/02/2025 21:45

Hope they sort him soon, it’s terrifying when you don’t know how to help/what to do. He’s in the best place now.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 28/02/2025 21:48

Hope he's ok.

FoxtrotOrange · 28/02/2025 22:01

The only sensible thing to do is book an out of hours appointment right now through 111 and take him to be triaged. You already feel like this is not normal, you are anxious. He's clearly unwell. It doesn't matter what previous experiences of 111 have been like. You are the only person able to advocate for him right now. Tell the person on the phone that you feel this is:

  • urgent
  • serious
  • out of character
  • requiring medical checks

Then and only then will you be able to feel reassured. Please do this right now.

FoxtrotOrange · 28/02/2025 22:01

Sorry - I've just caught up.
Please keep us posted Flowers

Babycatsmummy · 28/02/2025 22:09

Hope he's ok OP 🌷

Glad you went in and being seen to. Wishing you all the best.

Fiverfiver · 28/02/2025 22:16

This happened to my baby once, he had tonsillitis.

Foodylicious · 28/02/2025 22:17

My first was similar to this when he first had hand foot and mouth.
But the symptoms (blisters etc) didn't come out until after a day of awful screaming, irritability and the start of a nursing strike.
Fx you are seen soon and it isn't anything serious

ThePearlBee · 28/02/2025 22:17

Well done for following your instincts OP. Sending you all the best.

Yes my DS was also like this with HFM! The spots didn’t appear until the following day and they were barely noticeable at first. By the time the spots came he was much better.

Pyjamatimenow · 28/02/2025 22:20

Ear infection possibly. Hope you get some answers soon

Needmoresleep89 · 28/02/2025 22:25

My son was like this at 8 weeks with viral meningitis, cried for 24 hours and then the temp appeared. Discharged after 3 days then at 10 weeks he had bacterial meningitis. Stayed in hospital for 2 weeks that time but no lasting effects luckily! Hope you have answers soon
