Do I just go to a&e? No idea what’s wrong

Hi all. I have a 6 month old boy. This is my second baby. He’s been such a good baby. Fusses over his teeth, but he sleeps well and anytime he cries a cuddle will soothe him instantly.

since 6am this morning he hasn’t been ok. He woke up screaming. Finally got him back to sleep around 7. He felt warm but no temperature. Wet nappies. Irritable a day. Then since 1 o clock he’s just not stopped. Screaming, red face, constant tears. Heartbreaking cry. I’ve never heard him cry like this not even when he was ill with his chest and needed an inhaler. He won’t calm down. He wears himself out and passes out.

hes tensing his body, holding it completely straight if you lift his legs he freaks. I attempted to bath him - made him worse. He’s so hot but keep checking temp and nothing. Calpol did nothing. Gripe water did nothing I thought maybe he’s constipated. He has a nappy rash we’ve been applying cream to but it doesn’t look bad enough to warrant this reaction.

over the last two hours if you hold him on your chest and pat his back saying shhh he will fall back asleep but the moment you move or stop he instantly wakes screaming

i breastfeed him and he’s had some but he’s just not him

but how do I go to a&e and say my baby won’t stop crying? I’ve looked at every page, checked his body. I don’t know what’s wrong with him
i dont want to find childcare for my tired toddler. Get there, be dismissed by them make him worse. Make him endure blood tests or whatever for nothing but I just don’t know

any advice please

How are you doing, OP? It is so hard to have a little one in hospital, especially without answers. Hoping you both manage to get some sleep and that he's feeling much better by the morning Flowers

Badgerandfox227 · 01/03/2025 04:16

We had similar with our DD around 10months, she had a rash all over her body (it did blanch) and was inconsolable which very unlike her, although no temp. We ended up on kids ward for the night, and she finally went to sleep around 5am and we went home a few hours later. Was told was probably just a virus.

Hope your little one is doing ok, it’s so stressful when you don’t know what’s wrong and they are poorly, but you’re in the right place xxx

ThisFluentBiscuit · 01/03/2025 04:28

Really glad you're in hospital, OP. I know it's exhausting for both patient and family to be there, but he's 100 percent in the right place. The poor little guy!!! I do hope he starts to feel better as soon as possible. 💖

Sounds like my LO with an inguinal hernia.

I hope they get it sorted quickly, whatever it is.

How is he this morning OP? Sounds like they were happy to see you and observe him. Hope you had some sleep.

pilates · 01/03/2025 06:35

You are in the best place op. Hope they get to the bottom of it 💐

ChicaWowWow · 01/03/2025 06:35

Poor little one, and poor you! I hope he gets better quick! One thing it made me think of, is when my 1st had a fever and was also really upset all day and I couldn't find out why
She usually was a boob monster but this time, she would not stay on the boob and I was so scared she was gonna be dehydrated. A whole day like this. Then the next day I noticed little blisters in her mouth and on her toes, she had hand foot and mouth 🥲 Another time when she got like this is when she caught chickenpox pox, and again, the spots only showed a day or two after fever and unwell.

Thank you all for the supportive messages. So tired but so glad I’m here. Hopefully he gets better soon x

You did the right thing taking him in. It's awful when they're in hospital - had to take my then- six month old in for RSV last year, even though they are in the right place and you listened to your intuition, it's still stressful and unpleasant.

With infections, sometimes they never find the cause - it's more common than you would think.

Yes, it must have been. It was in the olden days when doctors made a house call. He was a trainee GP who happened to have just studied the condition, who took the groin swelling very seriously.

FWIW I doubt this is the OP's child's problem or she'd have noticed.

Point being that unusual upset in a baby needs attention. Anyone who says "is this your PFB?" needs to take a step back because you know the child and they don't.

DancyNancy · 01/03/2025 06:51

Your poor baby, and you!
I hope things are settling this morning xx

Ancientdecs · 01/03/2025 06:53

Hi OP have they checked carefully for a hernia? These come in and out so not always immediately visible in certain positions.

Sorry I missed this - yes I totally agree.

Sorry, he’s been like this all day and you come onto a forum for advice? You should have spoken to your GP during the day. Yes you do need to go to A&E as 111will take too long to respond.

Why offer advice/support/concern when you can be mean and condescending?....

Intheband · 01/03/2025 07:19

Woke up and thought of your little boy, hope you’ve managed to get a little sleep

You’re in the right place, don’t be afraid to ask for second opinion and more tests if you’re not satisfied. Xx

Omg I totally agree! We know our child(ren)'s normal, and we know when sth is off.
