Do I just go to a&e? No idea what’s wrong

Hi all. I have a 6 month old boy. This is my second baby. He’s been such a good baby. Fusses over his teeth, but he sleeps well and anytime he cries a cuddle will soothe him instantly.

since 6am this morning he hasn’t been ok. He woke up screaming. Finally got him back to sleep around 7. He felt warm but no temperature. Wet nappies. Irritable a day. Then since 1 o clock he’s just not stopped. Screaming, red face, constant tears. Heartbreaking cry. I’ve never heard him cry like this not even when he was ill with his chest and needed an inhaler. He won’t calm down. He wears himself out and passes out.

hes tensing his body, holding it completely straight if you lift his legs he freaks. I attempted to bath him - made him worse. He’s so hot but keep checking temp and nothing. Calpol did nothing. Gripe water did nothing I thought maybe he’s constipated. He has a nappy rash we’ve been applying cream to but it doesn’t look bad enough to warrant this reaction.

over the last two hours if you hold him on your chest and pat his back saying shhh he will fall back asleep but the moment you move or stop he instantly wakes screaming

i breastfeed him and he’s had some but he’s just not him

but how do I go to a&e and say my baby won’t stop crying? I’ve looked at every page, checked his body. I don’t know what’s wrong with him
i dont want to find childcare for my tired toddler. Get there, be dismissed by them make him worse. Make him endure blood tests or whatever for nothing but I just don’t know

any advice please

update. We are home
they don’t really know. They think it’s a viral infection or possible chicken pox but on a good note his temp is down, heart rate down and blood pressure we are down so they sent us home. Keep monitoring and they’ve given us 72 hour access to the paediatric team so they will help over the phone or if we really want to go back we can

he’s still so sad. But we have happy hours and then he gets bad again but so far temp hasn’t gone above 38 so I think we are breaking out of it
thank you all so much for your comments and best wishes. I’m so glad I went. Awful night sleep but i would never of been able to sleep here anyway he was so bad.

You did the right thing. It felt like I was always at A&E with my oldest but he was admitted twice for similar symptoms to the ones you have given. I once voiced that I was worried I was mithering and was reassured by staff. We know our children best and if something isn’t right then they only have us to say so. Hope he feels better soon x

Anewuser · 01/03/2025 20:21

Glad you’ve had peace of mind and he is now hopefully on the mend.

I think you’ll both manage to sleep tonight.

Smittenkitchen · 01/03/2025 20:42

Thanks for update. Hope he continues to get better, poor thing. And that you can get some sleep tonight!

Jesus Christ, the OP posted last night, went to A&E and has since updated that they’re home!

Read the thread!

What a nasty and aggressive message for an innocent mistake. Are you getting lessons in how to talk to people from Donald Trump?!!

It wasn’t a mistake, you and several others made a choice not to read the thread or even just the OP’s updates. It’s infuriating.

If you think my comment was “nasty and aggressive” I don’t think the internet is the place for you.

I won’t derail further, hope your little one has improved OP!

So the Internet is only for vile bullies? What a sad world you live in.

To be honest and fair, it gets really tiring and really old real fast when people don't Read The Full Thread before replying, or at the very least read all the OP's replies, so people get frustrated and pissed off. It happens on just about every single thread, someone will come on days later after it's all done and dusted and not bother to catch up before posting. It's the thing that pisses off posters the most on this site.

I’ve always found 111 to be useless, I’d go to A&E or a walk in centre if you have a local one and just explain everything you’ve told us.

Please RTFT. They've been and gone.

Justthistime1234 · 01/03/2025 22:59

Sorry, late to this - over Christmas for two days I had a temp 5.4 degrees higher than normal (I have an Oura ring and it measures - it was on red for emergency). The associated aches were so bad I couldn’t move my head. But no cough, slight sore throat but not terrible, no headache. Runny nose. It was the weirdest virus. There’s something very odd going round. I started to feel better after about three days. Just in case helpful x

SuffolkUnicorn · 01/03/2025 23:06

Yes. Posting without bothering to at least read the OP's posts means you often look like a dick.

Go to A + E now.

He's too young to tell you what is wrong and needs examing as he is obviously suffering.

My daughter went through this. Was really good for the first few months to maybe a year, sleeping well etc etc. Then lots of crying, difficulty sleeping etc. Stopped crawling and trying to climb. Basically became sedentary. Just before her 2nd birthday, we were able to get to the root of the problem which was juvenile arthritis. Unfortunately little ones can't tell us that they're in pain or where the pain is.

I'm not a doctor so may be wrong, but without a fever and clear symptoms, there's not much they can diagnose. A blood test might give some indication as to what is going on.

How is your baby now OP

Completely fine! Thank you for asking.
for anyone with similar symptoms it’s going round a lot but no idea what.
high temp 39-40 always. Hot to touch. I think the screening and the tensing might have been aches and pains from like a flu in his little body
had a cough on the Sunday and Monday but now honestly is completely fine like it never happened. There’s something weird going around.
back to teething last night so bit fussy but so relieved the screaming in pain is over.

very grateful I went to a&e. They took us seriously and kept up his meds throughout probably one of the worst nights I’ve ever had since being a parent. Thank you all so much for your concern
and for the mean ones I did go 🤷🏻‍♀️ wouldn’t want to be clogging up the nhs just to be sent home.
if you are worried and this thread helps at all just go!
