Do I just go to a&e? No idea what’s wrong

Hi all. I have a 6 month old boy. This is my second baby. He’s been such a good baby. Fusses over his teeth, but he sleeps well and anytime he cries a cuddle will soothe him instantly.

since 6am this morning he hasn’t been ok. He woke up screaming. Finally got him back to sleep around 7. He felt warm but no temperature. Wet nappies. Irritable a day. Then since 1 o clock he’s just not stopped. Screaming, red face, constant tears. Heartbreaking cry. I’ve never heard him cry like this not even when he was ill with his chest and needed an inhaler. He won’t calm down. He wears himself out and passes out.

hes tensing his body, holding it completely straight if you lift his legs he freaks. I attempted to bath him - made him worse. He’s so hot but keep checking temp and nothing. Calpol did nothing. Gripe water did nothing I thought maybe he’s constipated. He has a nappy rash we’ve been applying cream to but it doesn’t look bad enough to warrant this reaction.

over the last two hours if you hold him on your chest and pat his back saying shhh he will fall back asleep but the moment you move or stop he instantly wakes screaming

i breastfeed him and he’s had some but he’s just not him

but how do I go to a&e and say my baby won’t stop crying? I’ve looked at every page, checked his body. I don’t know what’s wrong with him
i dont want to find childcare for my tired toddler. Get there, be dismissed by them make him worse. Make him endure blood tests or whatever for nothing but I just don’t know

any advice please

Go now. Don’t wait until later as it will likely get busier on a Friday night.

Hope he’s okay.

JadeMonkey · 28/02/2025 20:40

I would take him to A&E, you’ll get seen quickly with an inconsolable baby, and better to be safe x

WimbyAce · 28/02/2025 20:40

Always err on caution with babies as they can't tell you how they are feeling. And they can go downhill very rapidly. Never be afraid to push either if you aren't happy with what you have been told. I had to have several battles when my eldest was very young. Remember out of everyone you know your baby best.

Had this with my boy, it was an ear infection, best to get antibiotics asap xx

Wishiwasatailor · 28/02/2025 20:44

Yes a&e or if you can get an ooh gp appt through 111 who can refer you straight to paeds.
my little one did this a few months ago was horrible no relief despite regular pain relief ended up having oramorph and an ultrasound to check for intestinal issues, woke up the next day right as rain never really figured out what it was. She probably cried more that day than she had in her entire life.

LateNightReads · 28/02/2025 20:46

Have you checked fingers toes and genitals for hair tourniquet?

Vallmo47 · 28/02/2025 20:47

Hope you’ve got him seen by now OP

Pippinsdiary · 28/02/2025 20:51

A&E or at least 111. Just for reassurance my also 6 month old was similar last week and the day after both bottom teeth had cut through

MissSkate · 28/02/2025 20:51

My boy was like this with a UTI, went undiagnosed for nearly 2 weeks as various medical professionals kept telling me he had a virus but luckily my instinct told me otherwise! Had to fight to get them to test a urine sample after telling them how much he screamed when he passed urine.

DragonFly98 · 28/02/2025 20:51

Take him to A and E but next time just phone the GP even if you phone in the afternoon they will fit a sick baby in.

curious79 · 28/02/2025 20:52

A&E now - this is very abnormal

Nonrienderien · 28/02/2025 20:56

Never take chances with a baby or underestimate your instincts. If there is no change & still the same call 111 or go to A/E

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 28/02/2025 20:59

Trust your Mother's instinct and go to A+ E.

XiCi · 28/02/2025 21:00

I'd have been in A&E hours ago

SpringLambie · 28/02/2025 21:00

As OP hasn’t posted for a while hopefully they are in A&E and have been triaged. Do come back and let us know how you are getting on, I think when you are with a baby all day you know when something is not right.

misspositivepants · 28/02/2025 21:10

I’d take him. I had similar and he actually had the flu, but they thought he had sepsis so was taken very seriously, they won’t be annoyed at seeing a young baby in distress

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 28/02/2025 21:11

Hope you have been able to see someone OP. Love and hugs to you and your wee one.

Curly12345 · 28/02/2025 21:15

A&E asap. Could be anything from ear infection to a twisted bowel.
I hope you are both ok. It’s horrible seeing your baby in pain

carly2803 · 28/02/2025 21:17

a and e

they would much rather check your baby out and send you home!
take the toddler if you need to

Snowtimex7 · 28/02/2025 21:20

Not ignoring anyone. I checked his temp and it was 39.7. So I took him in. Waiting to see a doctor. Bloods look fine

thank you all

Take him to A&E. I’d go straight there as a walking and not bother with a 111 appointment. Better safe than sorry. You are worried, he is poorly. Good luck. Thinking of you.

Yellowtulipsdancing · 28/02/2025 21:21

Good to hear you are being seen

Puzzledanddrinkingtea · 28/02/2025 21:23

Just saw you have gone to A&E. Hope that it is all sorted and you are home and healthy soon.

IDoWhateverItTakes · 28/02/2025 21:23

Glad you've taken him in

tattoonewbie · 28/02/2025 21:23

@Snowtimex7 I am so glad you're being seen. It's best and they never mind seeing babies. They'd always rather see you to be sure the baby is ok
