Do I just go to a&e? No idea what’s wrong

Hi all. I have a 6 month old boy. This is my second baby. He’s been such a good baby. Fusses over his teeth, but he sleeps well and anytime he cries a cuddle will soothe him instantly.

since 6am this morning he hasn’t been ok. He woke up screaming. Finally got him back to sleep around 7. He felt warm but no temperature. Wet nappies. Irritable a day. Then since 1 o clock he’s just not stopped. Screaming, red face, constant tears. Heartbreaking cry. I’ve never heard him cry like this not even when he was ill with his chest and needed an inhaler. He won’t calm down. He wears himself out and passes out.

hes tensing his body, holding it completely straight if you lift his legs he freaks. I attempted to bath him - made him worse. He’s so hot but keep checking temp and nothing. Calpol did nothing. Gripe water did nothing I thought maybe he’s constipated. He has a nappy rash we’ve been applying cream to but it doesn’t look bad enough to warrant this reaction.

over the last two hours if you hold him on your chest and pat his back saying shhh he will fall back asleep but the moment you move or stop he instantly wakes screaming

i breastfeed him and he’s had some but he’s just not him

but how do I go to a&e and say my baby won’t stop crying? I’ve looked at every page, checked his body. I don’t know what’s wrong with him
i dont want to find childcare for my tired toddler. Get there, be dismissed by them make him worse. Make him endure blood tests or whatever for nothing but I just don’t know

any advice please

Have they checked for a kidney stone? Don’t know if babies can be affected by them??

KenIsAnAccessory · 01/03/2025 08:24

Hope you and baby are doing ok and for some sleep OP. Hospital nights are the worst

Mulledjuice · 01/03/2025 08:28

You did the right thing taking him to A+E - it's always OK to take a baby in under those circumstances.

I hope you've had an ok night, that your DC is feeling better and made some progress on diagnosis.

Oh OP I hope your little boy is feeling better this morning and you get some answers. X

We were in and out with our eldest for about a year with temperatures- eventually was diagnosed with a quinsey which regular antibiotics never got rid of. Other one turned out was a lactose issue. Good luck - horrid having an unwell little one when they can’t tell you what is wrong.

ThreeMagicNumber · 01/03/2025 08:50

I hope things have improved this morning and you are both home soon, sending love and support ❤️

Sorry, he’s been like this all day and you come onto a forum for advice? You should have spoken to your GP during the day. Yes you do need to go to A&E as 111will take too long to respond.

Some people don't like rushing off and clogging up a&e unnecessarily. The OP even said her DH wasn't sure.
So maybe coming to a forum and being told that yes, she should go to a&e isn't a bad thing.
I'm sure if things were more clear cut, she would have been off to a&e without giving it a second thought.

Yellowtulipsdancing · 01/03/2025 09:10

Hope you are soon home.

we had a similar episode when my child was 6mths old … only difference was we were discharged from the ward at 3am, with a temperature still at 39.5C as they said no known cause! Took days to come down but it did, at home. Never knew why.

Mintyt · 01/03/2025 09:27

How are you both this morning

rainbowstardrops · 01/03/2025 09:36

Oh your poor little one. How's he doing this morning?

Umbrellah · 01/03/2025 09:39

Babies don't get them very often.

Notfeelinit · 01/03/2025 10:44

Thinking of you OP, you did the right thing going to hospital. How is your LO is doing this morning?

Pinkypup · 01/03/2025 11:05

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 01/03/2025 10:27

Babies don't get them very often.

Yeah I wasn’t sure.
I think that would also show up in a urine/blood test too.
I just know it’s something which can be really hard to get in a comfy position.

poor baby. I hope they figure it out

Starryknightcloud · 01/03/2025 11:09

Hope you're all OK, you must be exhausted x

RainingRoses · 01/03/2025 11:13

Sorry, wrong thread.

Also hope you’re ok OP.

Funnywonder · 01/03/2025 11:54

Hope you get some answers today OP. What a stressful situation for you. Sometimes, though, they never get to the bottom of what it was and it simply self resolves. My eldest had a febrile convulsion when he was small and the hospital couldn't find any reason why his temperature had spiked, let alone why it spiked so dramatically. The doctor said one of his ears looked a little bit pink inside but couldn't say for sure that this was the cause.

It is OK to take anyone there under these circs. NHS for patients, not patients for NHS. It is not like she demanded a helicopter lift.

Hoping your little bubba is ok and you get a diagnosis as soon as ..🙏

MadCatHag · 01/03/2025 12:09

Your poor child is in pain and you're posting for advice on here? For goodness sake go to A&E or call 111.

Maybe read all the ops posts first before slating her. She posted yesterday and is now in hospital.

CatInChimney · 01/03/2025 12:29

Hope he’s okay, OP. You’re in the right place

SquigglePigs · 01/03/2025 12:40

Hope you get some answers today and little one feels better.

FirmPearlNewt · 01/03/2025 13:49

Pain relief generally
needs to be taken more than once to be effective

Kuretake · 01/03/2025 14:09

We had a similar sounding thing where we ended up in A&E. They were very nice and sympathetic but couldn't find anything wrong and sent us home. He cheered up after about 24 hours and I still don't know what the cause was (this is a decade ago now). Best guess I had was it was something gastric. God it was awful, I remember being in the garden with him at 3am seeing if the cool air and a change of scene would help at all (it didn').

Sorry edited to add I hope you're OK and out soon. These things are so so stressful.
