Do you think I should report this?

Haven't put this in "legal" as I don't think it warrants it. One of the parents of a child at dd's school (not in her class so I don't know them at all) comes to collect the child in their car. I notived that the tax disc expired June 2004 Shock . I was rather surprised they hadn't been caught but thought no more about it until I spoke to my father, who is a magistrate. He said I must report this guy as the car also probably isn't MOT'd or insured. Do you think I should or is it a bit "busy-body". I ask as my dad is becomimg a bit of a Victor Meldrew (?sp) these days.

Report it. As your dad says, it's probably not mot'd or insured either. He may be a bit of a Victor Meldrew, but that doesn't make him wrong Wink.

mmmm funny one really, I know someone who put the disc in the cover but didn't take out the old one and it went underneath it so obviously it looked like they hadn't renewed it.

Report it. There is a special DVLA number you can ring and do it anonymously. I will try to find it for you.

Dad is also a bit bitter about drivers atm as he (and my mum) where hit by a drunk driver 2 weeks ago writting of the courtesy car they had whilst dad's car was being serviced. They were both absolutely fine (thank God). He now isn't allowed to sit on drink related cases for a while.

(mousie: road tax payers do not subsidise non road tax payers. hundreds of thousands of previously untaxed cars came to light after they moved to the new database, but the didn't decrease tax to compensate did they?)

Normally, I would just tell the people - "did you know your tax disc has fallen off?" so that they're sort of warned.

But in this case, as it's so long since they've bought a new one, I'd be inclined to go along with your dad and think that actually, they probably uninsured, un mot'd tailgaters who park on yellow lines, double park outside school gates, break the speed limit when it's school chucking out time and don't care if they kill pedestrians and are generally a BAD LOT. Grin So yes, I'd report this one.

I was concerned that I would be seen as being petty and sticking my nose in where it didn't belong, but it seems the general consensus is to report it so I think I will. Thanks everyone.

If you can't afford the tax, you can't afford to run a car. End of. It's a privilege, not a right.

If he hits someone they're stuffed and that's sooooo wrong.

Report it anonymously. It isn't right that they aren't paying. If they can't afford the tax they shouldn't have the car. If they can't be bothered or don't care about not having tax, they shouldn't have the car. Simple!

i must admit i am a bit of a "live and let live" type. I sort of believe in karma, and maybe it is insured... so id probably levae it too tbh.

FWIW I would report them, because I was run over by an uninsured driver and I would hate that to happen to anyone else (given that no tax may well mean no insurance).

but car tax is so visible - if they haven't paid that , something which is really easy to get caught out on, then what else haven't they paid up on ?

OH know you lot are making me doubt my decision. I don't want to be petty but I also don't want to keep schtum and then find out (not sure that I would do though) that something bad had happened and perhaps I could have had a hand in preventing it.
