Do you think I should report this?

Haven't put this in "legal" as I don't think it warrants it. One of the parents of a child at dd's school (not in her class so I don't know them at all) comes to collect the child in their car. I notived that the tax disc expired June 2004 Shock . I was rather surprised they hadn't been caught but thought no more about it until I spoke to my father, who is a magistrate. He said I must report this guy as the car also probably isn't MOT'd or insured. Do you think I should or is it a bit "busy-body". I ask as my dad is becomimg a bit of a Victor Meldrew (?sp) these days.

If the car tax expired in March / April 2006, then I'd give the benefit of the doubt. Not two years!!!!!

yes but if they just bought the car jones then its not them that have had it two years out of date is it! its the previous owners so whilst we agree they shouldnt be driving it any way they should get a little leeway for taxing it from when they first bought it

it's been untaxed for 2 years

it's a no brainer

if they were 'good' people, it wouldn't be on the road!

yes, happy, and that's why you don't DRIVE the car for 'several' weeks if you bought it and the tax was out of date until you've sorted the tax out.

it happens all the time to real life working poor people. they don't have the money to pay the tax till payday.

so they Shock! obey the law and don't drive the car till they get paid and stump up the tax.

Sorry, but what sort of person would buy an untaxed car? I certainly wouldn't!!!

actually i would just ask a complete stranger as i did just two days ago when i found myself trapped in my shared driveway by a car that didnt even have a tax disc. when i managed to locate the owner in the bookies next door thats EXACTLy what i did and his excuse was the tax disc had fallen down. i just told him i had taken a note of his license number. so yes i would just ask a complete stranger.

And I don't mean untaxed for a month. If someone was selling a car because they couldn't afford the tax etc., I don't think they'd have waited two years to sell the damn thing, would they!!!?

sorry but what if they knocked a kid down when they were collecting from the school??? How would CoV feel for giving them the benefit of the doubt??
(I know that is a bit extreme but it could happen and it usually does with the ones who are not taxed/insured!)

Its all so black and white isnt it. like i say report the people if you want, me, i would feel better giving them the chance. oh and i am sure if you confront them they would actually rather that and go and get tax than be reported and pay huge fines.

what are you talking about jones? the previous owners may very well have had the car for a year or two years without tax before deciding to sell! my brother stupidly bought a car before passing his test, taxed it once and then it sat outside our house for the next three years only been driven backward and forward on the drive before being sold on because he finally admitted he wouldnt pass his test!

I understand where you are comeing from regarding confronting people Happybee but there seems to be so many reprocutions when you do nowadays that its not worth it! A friends brother had a 'word' with someone for pushing in a q at Mcdonalds, upon leaving he was 'set upon and knifed' -

I taught someone who was knocked down by an uninsured driver (actually he was banned from driving so shouldn't have even been on the road). I know it's not quite the same.

This girl has been left severely brain-damaged and partially paralysed. She was a bright, beautiful kind, 13 year-old with her whole life ahead of her. Now she is condemned to a wheel-chair for the rest of her life, and will need constant care.

Her parents have had no compensation from this twat because he was uninsured.

So I'm sorry I would rather not give someone the benefit of the doubt for having a tax disc two years out of date.

And I would also rather not confront someone about it. How do you think someone willing to drive around for two years with no tax, MOT and insurance is going to react FFS?

and, as i wrote in my earlier post, should such a situation arise, those nasty little things like laws say you cannot drive the thing until you have sorted out the tax.

it's prettys simple: you either wait till you have the money, stump up to have it taxed, MOTd and insured and then get on the road. or, if you have the money, you do it straightaway and Shock same result: you stump up to have it taxed, MOTd and insured and then get on the road.

not hard at all.

I 'confronted' my DH's new next-door neighbour after he bumped my car into the middle of the road because I parked in front of his house one night.

He threatened me with a knife.

So I'd rather not confront people, thanks!

Yes, Jones, I was 'lucky' to only receive moderate injuries when a drunk, uninsured, untaxed motorist struck my car t-bar after he ran a light.

'Lucky' to only wind up w/a bankrupcy. Could have been a lot worse.

Still no excuse.

He went to jail and was banned for driving for life - that was his 5th DUI in 3 years.

Driving is a privilege NOT a right.
