Do you think I should report this?

Haven't put this in "legal" as I don't think it warrants it. One of the parents of a child at dd's school (not in her class so I don't know them at all) comes to collect the child in their car. I notived that the tax disc expired June 2004 Shock . I was rather surprised they hadn't been caught but thought no more about it until I spoke to my father, who is a magistrate. He said I must report this guy as the car also probably isn't MOT'd or insured. Do you think I should or is it a bit "busy-body". I ask as my dad is becomimg a bit of a Victor Meldrew (?sp) these days.

They've had TWO years to sort it out. Two years to be involved in an accident w/no insurance and someone else - peons like me - have to suck it up and pay for it.

What a load of bollocks.

Could be the car isn't even legit, so not on DVLA computer at the address they hold. 2 years is a long time not pay up.

Why should I be "giving them a chance to renew it", they have had a chance - 2years worth of chance" .

because you dont know the full situation. whats wrong with just asking them? if it concerns you that much ask them and if they fob you off with something thats clearly and excuse and not a valid reason then report them. like someone said perhaps they just bought the car or perhaps the disc is an old one that they didnt remove and somehow the new one has slipped out etc, it is just possible.

Can't believe the attitude of cherryberry and tiptoppop.

If the tax disc was a month out of date I'm sure no-one would think 'Oh let's go and report them'.

It's two years out of date FFS.

ComeOVeneer - if I were you I'd report it. And I wouldn't feel guilty about it either.

Exactly, COV!

The bloke who hit me got a $168 fine and a DUI - a stint in jail b/c he was a repeat offender.

I got a medical bill for $22,000, no car and no money to replace it b/c I was working temp and therefore not paid if I couldn't work, which I couldn't for a long time b/c of my injuries. And a Chapter 7 bankrupcy a couple of months later.

Can't pay the tax, too damn bad! Take a bus or walk. Life's rough.

oh and by the way the maximum penalty for not paying car tax is actually two years in prison and a 5000 pound fine.

Report
expatinscotland · 18/05/2006 15:14

Who's business is it what 'the full situation' is besides them and the DVLA!? 'Oh, so sorry you're driving a car w/no insurance or MOT, poor you!'

FFS!

JonesTheSteam · 18/05/2006 15:15

Well, if he didn't want to run the risk of going to prison and paying a fine, he should have taxed his car then, shouldn't he?

here, here, batters!

sure, i'd rather be doing something else w/the £180/year, but there's this little thing like personal responsibility, concern for others and THE LAW which somehow compels me to stump up the bloody tax.

well i am not bothered if you disagree with what i think, the post asked if she should report it i said no and i am well entitled to say so.

Do you think I should or is it a bit "busy-body" was part of the original post and i think its a bit busy body. what a world we live in when you cant just go and ask someone to explain themselves for example....look i happened to notice that your car is not taxed since 2004! now i am sure you can understand why i am concerned but i thought i would do the decent thing and give you the chance to explain whereas many people would just report you straight away.

whats the matter to afraid just to ask them???

Feistybird · 18/05/2006 15:20

I wouldn't report it - in fact, I know, I would never even have noticed in the first place. But even if someone pointed it out to me, no I wouldn't report it.

Don't bloody care what their 'story' is, happy, the rules are there and they didn't follow them. For TWO years. End of.

JonesTheSteam · 18/05/2006 15:24

I'm sorry but what reasonable excuse would you expect someone to give for not taxing his car (and therefore not giving it an MOT and not insuring it) for two years?

I forgot is hardly going to cover it, really is it?

Report
happybebe · 18/05/2006 15:24

well thats the difference between you and me then isnt it, i personally would feel happier giving them a chance, whereas you wouldnt big deal.

Report
happybebe · 18/05/2006 15:25

uh huh jones and what if they have just bought the car? fair enough they shouldnt have it on the road anyways but as you have all said you wouldnt suggest reporting it if it was only out of tax by a month or so.

JonesTheSteam · 18/05/2006 15:27

But they haven't just bought the car, have they Marne?

ComeOVeneer stated earlier down that she has seen them driving it round for several weeks. That's plenty of time to tax a car you've 'just' bought!!!

Maybe they just need directions to the local Post Office, eh?

I reported one the other day and it got towed away! They must have owed loads or had outstanding fines because I don't think they normally tow them.

you have all said yourself a month or two no tax you wouldnt report it a few weeks is not a month or two is it? perhaps they spent up on the car and are just waiting till pay day at the end of the month to get it? whatever we say none of us know the facts and i guess it boils down to the type of person you are, i prefer to see the good in people and give them a chance, you all obviously dont!

The car tax is two years out of date!!! It expired in June 2004. Not a couple of months happybebe!!!

so you would confront a complete stranger as to why they hadn't taxed their vehicle? yeah right!

plus once confronted if they then did nothing about it and you reported them they would know it was you.

sorry i would report it as we did with the car that had been left on our road, we reported it because it was obstructing a friends drive and the only way to get it moved was to report it when the tax ran out, they towed it the 10 days after the tax ran out, they are strict, and so they should be.
