JimJams asked us to find 250 Mumsnetters to test their hazelnut chocolate spread. Each lucky tester was sent one 350g jar of the low sugar spread to share with their families, spread on toast and eat with a spoon. Read the comments below to find out what they thought!

Here’s what JimJams co-founder, Kellie Bath, has to say about the 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread: "As a mum, I was shocked at the amount of sugar found in most chocolate spreads (the equivalent of 57 sugar cubes per 400g jar). I decided to create a range of spreads that tasted amazing but with a fraction of the sugar (83% less sugar than leading brands!).

Our chocolate spreads are available in hazelnut and milk chocolate varieties. They have won Great Taste Awards, are kinder to teeth and are gluten free.

We use Maltitol to sweeten our spreads which is derived from a natural source (not artificial). It has nearly half of the calories than sugar, is kinder on teeth and diabetic friendly.

The tiny amount of palm oil used (one third palm to two thirds rapeseed) is fully sustainable and certified by the RSPO."

Yes, the DC were excited to try it when it arrived but I've seen that reaction before and one bite and it's "I don't like it, it's not right" etc this time all plates were cleaned and I was left with happy dirty faces

We normally have things like the leading brand as a treat only, I would be happier with this being a more regular treat

The reaction once tasted, I was expecting outrage at it not being the usual brand! I was pleasantly surprised by the taste too, I doubt I would have picked it up when I was shopping but now that we've tried it and all liked it, I would buy it in future

Yes, we had a discussion about which we preferred (no strong feelings either way) and that with this being less sugar we could have it more often (weekends maybe rather than holidays/birthdays/easter etc) and with that in mind it won hands down!

Yes, we had a discussion about which we preferred (no strong feelings either way) and that with this being less sugar we could have it more often (weekends maybe rather than holidays/birthdays/easter etc) and with that in mind it won hands down!

Yes - it has a good taste and texture. We did a blind taste test and DS (7) preferred JimJams hazelnut spread over the leading alternative.

Yes and no - I really like the reduced sugar aspect, but not so keen on the fact that this has been achieved by using an artificial sweetener. The information on the jar indicates 'excessive consumption may cause a laxative effect', but it would be good to know what is meant by excessive consumption. The information on your website is slightly misleading - 'very high consumption (over 100g per day or nearly a whole jar) ‘may’ cause a laxative effect'. The jar is 350g, quite a bit larger than 100g.

Yes - spreadability was much better than the leading competitor.

Definatley! We all know chocolate spread isn't healthy, but we buy it anyway. I would definitely buy this over any other leading brands.

Yes, the taste! And my husbands reaction to it. He had a taste and started hugging himself saying it reminded him of chocolate spread he had as a kid and he was hugging his 10year old self 😂
We also loved that it remained a 'runny' consistency as many others develop a crust on the top.

Definitely. DD8 has a hereditary lack of enamel on her teeth so we are always looking for lower sugar options that don't contain lots of artificial sweeteners and are still a treat.

Yes, really lovely. We liked the texture and the children couldn't decide if they liked it more than Nutella or the same amount!

Yes, it's a big selling point. To be honest though, it contains malitol instead and I found that personally this gave me terrible stomach cramps and awful wind The children didn't seem to be similarly affected though.

As above, the flatulent side-effects for me weren't great. It was really delicious though and it tasted much better than I would have imagined.

Yes very much. On the spoon I felt it had a slightly oily aftertaste but with toast I couldn't taste it and no-one else could. You notice the lovely nutty taste more without as much sugar.

Yes, like I say it is a treat so it wouldn't be often. I'm not sure how much it costs elsewhere but at Morrisons it was £2.58 so slightly more than the Nutella but not much.

I like the texture too, I thought it was runny at first but it's surprisingly adaptable to whatever you use it on.

I haven't been that worried about the sugar aspect. My children have not long been eating chocolate spreads however it's starting to be eaten my regularly so the sugar aspect would have been bound to be questioned at some point I imagine. Also my eldest isn't too keen on sugar. She's more aware of it I think due to school and it was actually something she read on the jar when we tested it initially and was really pleased to learn it was less sugary than the other brands.
Packaging also good. Very appealing.

It was why I applied to test it but I was disappointed that it had sweetener in instead, I just want a spread that doesn't taste as sickly sweet. And as a general rule I would rather buy products with sugar and use them sparingly than products with sweeteners.
