Find out what MNers thought of JimJams 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread! NOW CLOSED

JimJams asked us to find 250 Mumsnetters to test their hazelnut chocolate spread. Each lucky tester was sent one 350g jar of the low sugar spread to share with their families, spread on toast and eat with a spoon. Read the comments below to find out what they thought!

Here’s what JimJams co-founder, Kellie Bath, has to say about the 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread: "As a mum, I was shocked at the amount of sugar found in most chocolate spreads (the equivalent of 57 sugar cubes per 400g jar). I decided to create a range of spreads that tasted amazing but with a fraction of the sugar (83% less sugar than leading brands!).

Our chocolate spreads are available in hazelnut and milk chocolate varieties. They have won Great Taste Awards, are kinder to teeth and are gluten free.

We use Maltitol to sweeten our spreads which is derived from a natural source (not artificial). It has nearly half of the calories than sugar, is kinder on teeth and diabetic friendly.

The tiny amount of palm oil used (one third palm to two thirds rapeseed) is fully sustainable and certified by the RSPO."

  1. We all loved this spread, I thought it was a good consistency and also used it to dip fruit in for a pudding

  2. Yes, I like the lower sugar, but would love it to be sugar free for my diabetic dad

  3. I was surprised at how good the spread tasted. With the high sweetener content I expected it to taste a bit artificial but it didn't. I'd definitely buy this and also seen it used at our local pancake parlour

  4. yes definitely

  5. salted caramel, white chocolate, cookies & cream

  6. yes we will

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes, the whole family enjoyed it. The kids have enjoyed having it on toast for breakfast (a bit of a summer hol treat!) . We did Snickers on toast by adding a layer of peanut butter (see pics) yum!

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes, we try to avoid too much sugar , but then the same could be said about artificial sweetness too, I don't like them either.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

It was just as nice as other choc spreads I have had in the past & didn't taste artificial or lacking in flavour in any way.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Sure.

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Choc spread with a peanut butter swirl.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes, I will purchase this one again for sure.

On a side note, I noticed that there was no suitable for vegetarians sign on the jar. I already knew it was v friendly as I had googled it prior to applying for this campaign. But in store, I wouldn't bother googling. No veggie sign on the jar I would assume it wasn't veggie (esp as it contains whey) and would therefore not purchase it. Also, I hate having to read ingredients to check if it is veggie and often won't bother. So, I would recommend putting a clear v symbol on the jar.

Thanks for letting us test this one, it was fun!

Our jar has just arrived and so far only I have tried it. My 7 year old is a huge Nutella fan so will report back with her views later!

I liked the taste. Very nutty, very chocolatey. Tasted kind of 'grown up' if that makes sense.

Yes it probably would make me think more about what I was buying. Although I'm not a huge fan of sweeteners either so I still think it would be a treat product.

Chocolate orange flavour would be good!

I would probably buy this again for myself. Will decide for sure when I know my daughter likes it too!

Overall my response is very positive. I was surprised by how good it tasted - I only ever buy Nutella, never another brand as they never taste as good. But I did like this one!

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread? My children expressed a real preference for this spread over any others we've tried in the past.
  2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product? It makes me MUCH more likely to choose this product over others
  3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread? How sweet it tasted despite the lower sugar content and how far just a little bit goes. The flavour really stands out.
  4. Would you purchase this product for your family again? Absolutely.
  5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try? Chocolate Peanut would be popular here, save tye boys from having to spread two different things in a sandwich!
  6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams? IF I can find it locally (rural West Wales), we will DEFINITELY be switching to JimJams!

1: Yes all the family did, it was also a bit easier to spread than nutella as it was thinner.
2: It is a positive though researching sweeteners makes me think we should avoid them too.
3: How it was so similar to the sugary ones, I had expected it to taste a little more chemical as it had sweetener in it.
4: I would yes.
5: Peanut butter came to mind. Possibly tahini too.
6: I will research sweetener a tad more before I decide. Thanks for the chance to try your product.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes, we all thought it had a great taste and the DC compared it to Nutella and a store own brand, but actually said this was as good if not better, as it is more 'chocolatey'.
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product? It sounds good on paper and certainly the ingredient is listed as Maliltol, not sugar, but when I compared the food label to the store brand one, the percentage of sugar was practically identical.
  2. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread? Yes, the fat content was higher than my existing brand. I expected it to be an overall healthier option.
  3. Would you purchase this product for your family again? Possibly- I would need to look into the sugar substitute and how healthy it is.
  4. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try? A rainbow chocolate would be good, with coloured sprinkles or balls, chocolate orange of maybe a smooth Belgian chocolate.
  5. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Based on taste yes, but only if it were a comparable price. I need to look into the Maliltol question further.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

We did. Normally my son can sense if I am giving him something new but he thought that this spread was 'super yummy' and was delighted when I gave it to him at snack time :)
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes it did. I was more likely to give this to my son as a snack rather than a treat as it had less sugar.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

Even though my son realised it was different to his normal spread once he tasted it he loved it and this meant that he wanted more. He is very reluctant to try new things.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

I would buy this product again. We have nearly finished out jar so will be looking out for this in the aisles of the super market!
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

I would love dark chocolate as this is my favourite however I think that my son and nephew would like a caramel flavour :)
  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes. Yes. Yes. We loved it and it had less sugar. Win Win!

Yes, definitely makes me more likely to purchase and allow my DC to have some.
3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
Surprised that it tasted so good - didn't notice the lack of sugar at all, which makes me wonder why other spreads have so much.
4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Definitely, depending on price obviously.
5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
DS1 would love white chocolate, DS2 has suggested strawberry chocolate flavour.
6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
I don't have a usual brand as tend to buy what's on offer but I will be looking for JimJams next time I'm buying some.

I bought a jar of this stuff.

3 thoughts.

  1. it tastes nice, initially ✔️
  2. the sweeteners aspect concerns me (don't eat the whole jar with a spoon unless you want the runs) ✖️
  3. the smell when I opened the jar the next day was revolting. Fishy with undertones of cheap chocolate. So repulsive in fact, that I threw the jar in the bin. ✖️

1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
I thought it was revolting; very sweet with an awful artificial aftertaste. The children said they enjoyed their sandwich but when they were asked if they'd like some more the next day they both declined! Unheard of for two boys who would generally live off choc-nut spread if given half a chance!

2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
That's what attracted me to test the product.

3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
My son thinks it gave him a dodgy tummy and I started to wheeze after eating it

4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
No

5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
Choc-mint, choc-orange, choc-raisin are all tempting flavours

6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
No thanks. I'd rather my children have a sugar version but less of it.

  1. Yes the fact that it has so much less sugar would make me choose it over another brand or perhaps buy it more often.

  1. I was surprised by how similar it tasted to the leading brand and if anything seemed more chocolatey.

  1. Yes I'm sure I'd buy again

  1. Maybe chocolate and peanut butter or chocolate and coconut flavours.

  1. Yes the children preferred the consistency of the JimJams.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes definitely. I don't allow chocolate cereals or spreads other than on a weekend. I'd be very tempted to make this a regular breakfast item, maybe teamed up with fruit.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

Both children thought it was a creamier, smoother spread than others. I was surprised at how flavoursome it was. It tastes like a luxury product!

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again? Absolutely.

Definitely. We are all partial to chocolate spread and this is the best of the bunch!

The 11 year old fancies flavoured spreads, maybe orange or mint? The 7 year old is wondering if you could do a white choc/milk choc swirl.... and I'm voting for a crunchy hazelnut. Like a peanut butter, but chocolate... My husband thinks it's great as it is.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes, I will be making the switch.

I eat chocolate spread around 4-5 times a week so I was rather excited about this test!

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would. It was really light, almost airy in texture. I found it tasted best on toast although was surprised at how much I enjoyed the flavour in a sandwich too. My husband wasn't as keen on it but our 7 year old, who normally dislikes chocolate spread, actually said she liked it. And the baby (8 months) licked a bit off my toast and seemed very pleased.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

As a huge consumer of chocolate spread throughout my childhood and now as an adult, it definitely does. I must admit I was quite unaware of just how much sugar was in our normal spread until the test as it was just something I'd always enjoyed.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

I was so impressed with the flavour given the low sugar content. I was all prepared to dislike it on the basis that less sugar means less flavour Blush I also was surprised at the ease with which it spread, less cloying than most brands which was a pleasure when trying to spread it on bread.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes I would certainly consider it given the ingredients.

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

We really enjoy the many variations so would definitely welcome this. Out current favourites are Maltesers and Crunchie so possibly ones with biscuits or a Crunchie texture.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

I would be very happy to but am still working on convincing my husband to agree!

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes, its creamy but not sickly like other chocolate spreads are.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes, I'm more likely to buy it again, especially as I've already found it in Sainsburys!

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

Very easy to spread, DD thought it wouldn't be as nice as the main brands but she prefers it.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes.

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Mint chocolate spread could be nice or orange and chocolate. Maybe with a hint of chilli or sea salt for the grown ups?

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes, it's much nicer, easier to spread and contains far less sugar. A no brainer really!

Our Jim Jams only arrived yesterday. Good timing as our Nutella was just running out.
The kids usually have Nutella on crumpets as a treat.
First impressions from me were that it smelt lovely but that the texture was different to the usual brand.
I was aware that that Jim Jams had less sugar but for some reason I had 33% not 83% less in my head.
We all liked the taste is fairly similar to the usual brand. Although when tried along side Nutellabwe could believe how sweet the Nutella tasted.
Thank you for the chance to test this.
We will absolutely be changing to Jim Jams from Nutella, even if the price is different for 83% less sugar to me it is worth it.
On the different flavours front our 6 year old would like to try white chocolate spread, personally I would not sounds very very sweet!
