JimJams asked us to find 250 Mumsnetters to test their hazelnut chocolate spread. Each lucky tester was sent one 350g jar of the low sugar spread to share with their families, spread on toast and eat with a spoon. Read the comments below to find out what they thought!

Here’s what JimJams co-founder, Kellie Bath, has to say about the 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread: "As a mum, I was shocked at the amount of sugar found in most chocolate spreads (the equivalent of 57 sugar cubes per 400g jar). I decided to create a range of spreads that tasted amazing but with a fraction of the sugar (83% less sugar than leading brands!).

Our chocolate spreads are available in hazelnut and milk chocolate varieties. They have won Great Taste Awards, are kinder to teeth and are gluten free.

We use Maltitol to sweeten our spreads which is derived from a natural source (not artificial). It has nearly half of the calories than sugar, is kinder on teeth and diabetic friendly.

The tiny amount of palm oil used (one third palm to two thirds rapeseed) is fully sustainable and certified by the RSPO."

Testers - to be in with a chance of winning a £300 Love2Shop voucher please post your feedback on the thread below, including answers to these questions as well as completing a short survey when we send this to you:

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
  2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
  3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
  4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
  5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
  6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Thanks and good luck,

That it tasted just as good, if not better than, the brand I'd normally buy.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Definitely!

Salted caramel. Or with peanut butter.

WhosTakingDeHorseToFrance · 24/07/2017 15:58

Thanks for including us in the trial. We've had fun tasting and baking with our jar of Jim Jams.

1.Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Yes, it tasted really nice. Not overly sweet and nice and nutty.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
I'm not hugely keen on giving artificial sweeteners to my kids and would tend to just limit sugary foods rather than give alternative "sugar free" version. I was pleased to see there was less palm oil in it than Nutella this would sway me to buy more.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
Texture was lovely, very spreadable. Tasted nice and I only detected the sweetener tang when we baked the banana and chocolate loaf from the website recipe.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
On the fence about this. Perhaps if on offer.
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
I think a cheesecake range would be good e.g. White chocolate and lemon curd or raspberry swirled through it. Chocolate orange always a winning combo.
  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
We buy it rarely anyway because it's a treat and it's an environmental no go with all that palm oil. Perhaps given it has less palm oil than Nutella.

1 - my daughters loved it! My youngest daughter was trying to sneak a spoonful!
2 - yes, would definitely buy
3 - yes, my husband who doesn't normally go near the stuff was happily tucking into it on toast!
4 - 100% would buy again
5 - my daughters would love a chocolate orange flavour, my husband said he would love a mint or caramel version
6 - yes without a doubt we will buy this in future.

We also found the consistency is just right for spreading.

I also love this is gluten free, one of my closest friends has coeliacs disease and I have been looking out for products that she can have.

A 100% success in this house!

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes! It was a big hit and you'd never know it was lower sugar than Nutella.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes, I would absolutely choose JimJams over any other brand of chocolate spread based on the lower sugar content.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

The taste and the texture. It was really easy to spread. I thought it would taste noticeably different to Nutella (in a bad way) but we all preferred JimJams. It doesn't have that sickly sweet taste that Nutella has.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes 100%.

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Dark Chocolate would be great or Chocolate Orange.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes, I doubt I'd buy Nutella again now. My eldest DC said the packaging is much more eye catching too than Nutella.

cornflakegirl · 24/07/2017 17:51

  2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product? Not massively because the overall calories aren't very different.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread? 3 of us did, my dd who doesn't like Nutella didn't like this spread either, unfortunately.
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product? Yes, I would be more likely to buy it.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread? The taste! It was delicious, I expceted it to taste artificial, like it was made with sweeteners. It wasn't at all artificial tasting.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again? Absolutely!
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try? White chocolate would be good, as would pistachio chocolate, or salted caramel?
  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams? Yes yes yes!

Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
It was a big hit, very creamy.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Usually I avoid low sugar products, I'd rather have less artificial products. The low amount of palm oil would sway me, no palm oil would be a winner.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

The taste, I thought it would taste synthetic.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Probably
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
Mixed with marshmallows, and a white chocolate spread. These are the children's ideas, I think they sound too sweet!
  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
I'd consider it, but it would depend on the convenience of where it was on sale.

Thanks for the product test, we loved it.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Very popular indeed
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
This is a major plus point as is the lower amount of palm oil
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
Was a bit runnier and 'darker' tasting than I'm used to. Also bakes hard not gooey like other spreads
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again
Yes
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
Choc orange, salted caramel, dark choc, ?? Choc Chilli, choc peanut butter swirl.
  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
As a spread on bread, yes (cost dependant). Doesn't bake like the brand leader though so will still use that for gooey brownies and Choc hazelnut plaited loaf
luanda111 · 24/07/2017 21:33

I am still waiting for mine to arrive. :(

starlight36 · 24/07/2017 21:49
  1. We enjoyed the taste of JimJams spread. My DC didn't notice any differences. DD commented that it looked smoother than our usual spread. I didn't think it was perhaps as nutty as the brand leader. I was waiting for the strange taste of the sweetener as tend not to like this taste in sweets or diet drinks but didn't get that horrible chemical aftertaste.
  2. Greatly reduced sugar is definitely a huge attraction in buying JimJams hazelnut spread. I was quite shocked to recently discover how much sugar was in the brand leader, especially as a dietician had recommended my son eat it as she wanted to increase the amount of nuts in his diet. I also like the reduced amount of palm oil in JimJams so read and the fact it is from sustainable sources.
  3. I was surprised how much the spread tasted like the brand leader, I was expecting it to taste more different.
  4. Yes I will definitely purchase this product again.
  5. A chocolate and cherry spread would be yummy.
  6. Yes, I woukd definitely swap JimJams for our usual brand.
BikeRunSki · 24/07/2017 22:00
  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Epic (DS8), I love it (DD5). I really liked it, not too sweet or cloying. Texture/consistency nice too, not too thick and sticky .
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
I like that, but then I worry about the effect of the sweetners instead! Didn't realise that Malitol was natural, makes me feel a bit better.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
I was surprised how sweet it was, but not synthetic tasting. Disappointed that it contains palm oil, sustainable or otherwise.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Yes
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

White chocolate (children's votes) plain chocolate (adults votes), swirled with peanut butter (me!)

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Yes very much so, i am not a massive fan of chocolate spread the kids love it however i licked the knife clean after spreading it on my youngests toast. Its really hazelnutty very much reminded me of ferrero rocher chocolates. My children said it was yummy and would be quite happy to eat it by the spoonful.
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Most definitely I like the fact that there is 83% less sugar as i am conscious of the damage sugar can do to their teeth so the less of it in their diet the better.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
You couldnt tell that it had a massively reduced sugar content, there was no bitter after taste that can be tasted when products have artificial sweetners in.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Yes if it was available in the supermarkets i use online and in store.
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
Salted caramel, caramel and chocolate, mint chocolate, white chocolate chip, white chocolate and strawberry swirl.

Thanks so much for letting us try this!

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Yes, it's delicious. DS asks for "the new one" over Nutella.
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes, it's a definite attraction. The kids love Nutella but I worry about letting them have too much of it.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

How good it tastes! And that the kids enjoyed it so much. We've tried other chocolate spreads before (for price reasons) and they didn't like the taste, but they adore this and ask for it.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes, if comparable to price to Nutella. Not if much more expensive though

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Choc orange?
Or with Salted Caramel

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Absolutely, if not more expensive. Nutella is pricey enough. I wouldn't want to pay more I'm afraid, not even for lower sugar content.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread? - yes tastes very good and we wouldn't know it wasn't Nutella.
  2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product? Hmmm, I'm in two minds - yes, I'd like to reduce sugar but would rather not increase artificial sweeteners either.
  3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread? Expected a chemical aftertaste and there wasn't, it tastes really good.
  4. Would you purchase this product for your family again? Yes as a treat
  5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try? - biscuit bits in one, caramel and addition of some kind of fruit flavour would all be tempting
  6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate for JimJams? Not sure, as I said I wonder what harm the sweeteners do that we just aren't aware of yet. Would love sugar to be reduced by using natural flavours instead of artificial.
CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 25/07/2017 09:04
  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes, it tasted just like Nutella. We have had other brands of chocolate spread before and the kids didn't like them. Impressed by the taste considering it's a lot lower in sugar!

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes, I think I will be buying this in future as I am often wary of low sugar items thinking taste and flavour may not be as nice as the full sugar versions - this tastes great.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

It goes very far. I went to spread it on warm toast and I had taken far too much from the jar as it spreads well.
Also so impressed by the taste with less sugar.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Definitely, I like the low sugar aspect and am pleased it has rapeseed & sustainable palm oil so is better for the environment too.

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Chocolate orange, white chocolate, chocolate with peanut butter.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes, and I think I will now.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 25/07/2017 09:05

1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
About 50/50 split! seemed thinner than Nutella and less 'nutty', and less sweet!

2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Chocolate spread isn't an 'every day' food in our house, more 'treat' food, so to be honest sugar levels aren't a factor.

3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
Just that most 'own brand' versions of choc-nut spreads are the same consistancy as nutella, this wasn't.

4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Probably not.

5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
White chocolate might be a hit, it's not easy to get hold of.

6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
Nope.

TheHobbitMum · 25/07/2017 09:34
  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes we absolutely did, we actually preferred it to the tate of Nutella. The jar was empty in record time!

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
The fact it was so much better for us regarding the sugar content surprised me as you really cannot tell by the taste as it tastes so good!
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
I love the fact it uses sustainable palm sugar as deforestation and the plight of the Orangutans means a lot to me and I actively search for products that don't contain palm sugar. The huge amount of palm sugar used by Nutella is what stopped me buying it a year or so ago
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again
Yes, I have been asked by the family to keep a look out for JimJams chocolate spread when shopping next
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

A caramel flavoured spread (similar to Lotus spread) would be fantastic! If it's as good as the chocolate spread we'd also be regularly buying that too

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes, we have definitely made the switch to JimJams now Grin

MackerelOfFact · 25/07/2017 09:36

I picked mine up from the sorting office yesterday - was a nice suprise! I didn't get an email though @MNHQ - can you notify us on this thread when its been sent, as I'm worried it's getting filtered into my junk.

1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Yes - much tastier than expected!

2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
It does, but the calorific content is still high. It's only 50 cals per 100g less than Nutella (494 cals compared to 546 cals) so a 25g serving is basically the same.

3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
Because it is a 'healthy' version I was expecting it to taste nuttier and have more of a peanut butter-type consistency - but it was smooth and glossy like other chocolate spreads. It doesn't really taste any different to Nutella.

4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Yes, if the price was right (less than £2.50 really).

5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
I love hazelnuts and was a little disappointed it wasn't nuttier, but that's just me, so maybe peanut butter flavour or something. It's not a flavour, but I'd really like to be able to buy a squeezy chocolate spread as we mostly drizzle rather than spread (such as in porridge, on dessert, etc).

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
Yes, at the right price.
MackerelOfFact · 25/07/2017 09:37

Oh, the other reason I'd like to buy squeezy chocolate spread is that it stops the eating-from-the-jar-with-a-spoon 'issue'. Blush
