JimJams asked us to find 250 Mumsnetters to test their hazelnut chocolate spread. Each lucky tester was sent one 350g jar of the low sugar spread to share with their families, spread on toast and eat with a spoon. Read the comments below to find out what they thought!

Here’s what JimJams co-founder, Kellie Bath, has to say about the 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread: "As a mum, I was shocked at the amount of sugar found in most chocolate spreads (the equivalent of 57 sugar cubes per 400g jar). I decided to create a range of spreads that tasted amazing but with a fraction of the sugar (83% less sugar than leading brands!).

Our chocolate spreads are available in hazelnut and milk chocolate varieties. They have won Great Taste Awards, are kinder to teeth and are gluten free.

We use Maltitol to sweeten our spreads which is derived from a natural source (not artificial). It has nearly half of the calories than sugar, is kinder on teeth and diabetic friendly.

The tiny amount of palm oil used (one third palm to two thirds rapeseed) is fully sustainable and certified by the RSPO."

Testers - to be in with a chance of winning a £300 Love2Shop voucher please post your feedback on the thread below, including answers to these questions as well as completing a short survey when we send this to you:

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
  2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
  3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
  4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
  5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
  6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Thanks and good luck,

  1. Yes - it's really similar to Nutella and didn't have an artificial taste, which I was worried about. It's really really nice.
  1. I'd feel happier buying this than a full sugar brand - it tastes the same and has very little sugar in it so it's a no brainer swap really.
  1. I was surprised that the difference in calories between this and Nutella isn't bigger considering the amount of sugar that is cut out of the Jim Jams recipe.
  1. Yes - the 8 year old loved it and I'd definitely eat it on toast or in a recipe every now and again.
  1. I love chocolate spread swirled with peanut butter so that would go down well with me. I'm also a sucker for anything choc-mint flavoured. Not a fan of white chocolate spread though.
  1. Yes, definitely.

Thank you very much for the opportunity to test this - we love it!

HHP1 · 04/08/2017 14:33

1 We all loved it. Really lovely chocolaty flavour but without the greasiness you get with nutella.

  1. I'd purchase it for flavour anyway and the fact it has much less sugar is a definite bonus, as I'm trying to get my children to reduce their sugar intake.
  2. I was surprised it tasted the way it did. It was less sweet than nutella but you couldn't really tell very easily - I didn't tell my children before they had it and they didn't notice!
  3. I'll definitely buy this again as my children love chocolate spread and I feel this is better for them.
  4. White chocolate would be amazing and maybe different nutty flavours.
  5. I don't think I'll buy other brands againa dn will change to this.
Goldiefawn · 04/08/2017 17:23
  1. All of us thought it was yummy! I don't normally buy Nutella as I thought the kids would refuse to eat anything else if I did!

  2. Yes - we are sugar conscious here so anything with less sugar is great.

  3. It tasted great!

  4. Yes, I would purchase it again as a treat.

  5. White chocolate would be a winner here!

  6. Would switch to this.

Thank you for sending us a jar!

sunshinel · 04/08/2017 21:50

We did enjoy the taste, it was surprisingly close in taste to our normal spread but a lighter consistency.
The fact that the sugar content is so much less definitely makes me think differently about purchasing it.
I was surprised how nice it tasted, I wasn't expecting it to taste anything like what I'm used to and it was very light in consistency, which was lovely.
I would, the only thing that would possibly put me off is the reviews I've read about the effect the sweetener has on your body.
Salted caramel or mint chocolate would be nice!
I would swap it for me but would be hesitant for the children in case the sweetener upset their stomach

cgraves · 04/08/2017 23:13

angelnandy28 · 05/08/2017 02:11

1.Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Most definitely. I personally do not usually eat a well known brand or supermarket versions as I just don't like them. I had a little nibble of Jim-jams fully expecting to feel the same but was shocked to find I actually like it!! The hazelnut flavour comes through wonderfully.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Yes, of course, I was disgusted to find out the sugar content of other brands. I purchased as an occasional treat for my kids as I knew it wasn't going to be the healthiest of choices. Although there is the warning about the possibility of a laxative effect on consumption of large amounts, I don't find this anything to worry about as my children would never be eating more than a slice or two on toast.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
Yes!! Completely taken aback that it actually tastes better than popular and well known brands already on the market! I kid you not, it's really tasty. Lovely combination of choc n nut with no aftertaste I had thought might be an issue, it wasn't at all.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Yes, I definitely would, my dd age 7 absolutely loved it and asked if we can have it againSmile
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
White chocolate might be interesting, maybe other types of nut such as pecan etc, salted caramel is very popular atm so that could be good. Choc orange, mint chocolate my dd thinks would be fab.
  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
YES!! YES!! YES!! YES!! Big congrats on your product, it really is an amazing achievement!! Xx
FranksBobot · 05/08/2017 09:13
  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes, everyone except the extremely fussy 2 year old enjoyed the spread!

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

It does appeal to me more, especially as the eldest would have chocolate spread on every meal.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

I was very surprised at how sweet it is. I expected it to be very bitter.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Most likely, price dependant.

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

White chocolate, mint chocolate and chocolate orange would go down well!!

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

I would if the price was right.

Sorry for the delay in replying Mumsnet, I'm having login troubles thanks to a new phone!

minisoksmakehardwork · 05/08/2017 21:31
  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Yes we did. It compared favourably to our usual choices. DS2 particularly enjoyed it as a chocolate spread and banana sandwich.
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Yes. We are always looking at ways to reduce our sugar intake without compromising wholly on treats. Knowing there was 83% less sugar than other leading brands makes it a more positive choice
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
It was a lot more runny than I expected. Also, knowing there was less palm oil in this product and that it was sustainably sourced was a positive. Most of the brands we've vetoed recently have a majority palm oil and it's something we are choosing to avoid.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
yes, although we would wait until it's on offer. Compared to other brands, it is dearer and we need to think which of our budget or principles should be compromised first.
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
chocolate and banana! The grown ups like flavours like salted caramel, maybe a choc/cashew combo. Pistachio!
  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams? if the price was right then yes. Right now we consume a lot of chocolate spread and our budget takes priority
roalddahl · 05/08/2017 21:47

1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
I liked it a lot - but my son could definitely taste the difference and didn't like the JimJams as much.
2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Yes - but I was disappointed to see that it has almost as many calories as other chocolate spreads.
3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
It was good to know that the palm oil is from sustainable sources.
4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Probably not as it's close but not quite identical to other chocolate spreads. But have previously tried JimJams jam and liked it very much.
5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
A biscuit spread could be yummy. And a Dulche de Leche.
6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
I wouldn't sorry because only I would eat it.

puglife · 06/08/2017 14:23
  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes, we were all surprised that we liked it as much as the usual chocolate spread.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

definitely. I'll be purchasing this in preference to the usual choice. Less sugar is a big selling point.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

That the taste wasn't compromised by less sugar

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes, we will now be purchasing this.

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

I asked my daughter, her suggestion was chocolate orange. I'm not convinced that would be nice in a sandwich!

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

yes, we will be swapping.

Ladylucky99 · 07/08/2017 08:27
  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

We all really enjoyed the JimJams spread. I have had it on toast a few times and it is delicious, I would say it is as good and if not better than the leading brand. My toddlers have had some with a bowl of fruit and in their fruit muffins and love it too. Too know how much sugar is in it is brilliant and a real treat for them as I wouldn't let them have others until now. It has also been a nice treat for me while I'm dieting

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes definitely without a doubt. I wouldn't buy other brands before as I refuse to let my children eat it and as I'm always watching my sugar intake I steered clear too but now I feel this could be a treat in the cupboard to enjoy with anything!

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread? The taste!! I didn't believe it could be as good as it is with such little sugar in! I have been proved wrong! It is delicious
  2. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Yes I will definitely be purchasing again
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Caramel, marshmallow, dark chocolate, mint chocolate! The worlds your oyster, lots of flavours you could do. Mint would definitely be a hit for me. My children and husband love the sound of white chocolate mixed with the hazelnut

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes without a doubt!! Why wouldn't you?!

Many thanks for this opportunity

MTBMummy · 07/08/2017 08:53

Ours finally arrived last week - thank you!

1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Overall yes, DD won't touch it, DS will only eat it on a spoon and refuses it on bread, DH says he's definitely had worse, and I do like it, the taste of the sweetener just takes a little getting used to. Going to try baking with it and see if I get a different response.

2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
It does, and I'm very keen to use it rather than other spreads with a higher sugar content

3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
As mentioned above, the taste of the sweetener was a bit odd, but not unpleasant. I love that the chocolate flavour isn't lost with the reduced sugar

4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
I'll definitely try the plain chocolate flavour, and depending on the outcome of my baking experiments may buy again.

5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
Definitely dark chocolate, or peanut butter chocolate mix (think Reeses)

6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
Highly likely, depending on cost

outnumbered77 · 07/08/2017 11:38

Thank you mumsnet for letting us try this delicious chocolate spread.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Oh yes we all enjoyed the taste. The children immediately requested that we buy it every time.
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Definitely, particularly as maltitol is better for teeth.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
It tastes less sweet and more nutty than our usual brand and I was surprised that we all preferred the taste.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Definitely
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

My children wouldn't be keen on white chocolate, but did suggest caramel chocolate as an alternative, or a darker chocolate variety.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes, we preferred the taste.

izzybobsmum · 07/08/2017 14:40

My jar arrived whilst we were away on holiday, so only just got around to testing. We seem to be swimming against the tide in our house, compared with most of the other responses!

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread? It was ok. I don't know whether I was influenced by having read the ingredients first, or whether I just have ridiculously sensitive taste buds, but it had that 'artificial sweetener' taste to me. My DD did a blind taste test with Nutella and picked the Nutella.
  2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product? It did, until the product arrived, and I discovered that the sugar has just been replaced with sweetener.
  3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread? I was a little surprised that it was just a sweetener substituted product
  4. Would you purchase this product for your family again? No
  5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try? None
  6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams? No.
FeekyChuckers · 07/08/2017 14:50

1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Yes we did.

2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Yes definitely.

3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
I didn't expect it to taste so nice and spread really easily.

4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Yes

5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
Chocolate orange.

6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
I would probably buy both brands.

bsayburn · 07/08/2017 14:54

I 1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Yes it has become a new firm family favourite.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Yes it's great to know that I can treat my family to a great tasting product without them consuming too much sugar.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
It's richness of flavour & gorgeous smooth texture.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Yes - already have! It will be a regular on my shopping list.
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
Coconut & chocolate is a favourite combination in our house so we would love a JimJam with this combo.
  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
Yes - already have!
JellyBabiesSaveLives · 07/08/2017 16:34

When I received the chocolate spread, on 21st July, I emailed jimjams to ask how many of the 49.4g of carbs come from maltitol, and how many from the cocoa and milk. My son has type 1 diabetes and you only use 50% of the carbs from maltitol when calculating insulin doses. I was hoping that info would be on the label, since they are marketing this at people with diabetes.

I still haven't heard back from them, so my son hasn't tried the spread, and I haven't tried it either since we're obviously not going to buy it again.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
The two children who tried it said it was ok but not as good as Nutella.
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Well, it contains maltitol instead which is even less healthy for you than sugar so I would feel much the same about us eating it as Nutella - it's an occasional treat.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
The fact that the manufacturers are marketing it at people with diabetes and yet don't include the necessary information about how many of the carbs come from maltitol.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
No
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
No

No
ButtonMooooon · 07/08/2017 17:08

I feel really bad as I just got an email saying the deadline has passed. I collected mine from Royal Mail just before we went on holiday and meant to bring it with me and forgot, I left it at home with the kitchen sink which is the only thing I left behind

I shall post ASAP Blush

QueenPashley · 07/08/2017 17:10

Unfortunately not such a hit in the Pashley household. Three children and husband are die hard Nutella fans and apparently Jim Jams doesn't come close, it is too nutty. It's a shame, as I would have purchased this as an alternative to Nutella due to the lower sugar content.

Thank you for the opportunity to test.

Janina71 · 07/08/2017 19:48

Only just back from holiday!
I tried this before the children, if I didn't like it, they definitely wouldn't but I loved it, found it a lot smoother than Nutella.
The children couldn't tell the difference!
I like that it's much lower in sugar but i'm equally concerned about fat content and as with Nutella, would only eat this in moderation.
I will definitely buy it if it were readily available.

TapStepBallChange · 07/08/2017 21:45

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

the fact that I couldn't taste the sweeteners.

1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
We all liked it, Children especially.
2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
We don't eat chocolate spread very often, as I try and limit how much sugar the kids are having, and I think it's more of a treat than an everyday thing. The fact JimJams has less sugar means I'm more likely to buy it, and a bit more likely to eat it, but I still think we'll be having it occasionally rather than regularly.
3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
That it tasted so much like the regular brands
4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Yes, I would purchase it in preference to the high sugar chocolate spreads. I've already had a look to see which shops stock it for when we want some more.
5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
We're not keen on white chocolate, but chocolate orange, or malted chocolate might be nice.
6. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?
Yes. I will be buying again at some point.

PixieDreams · 07/08/2017 23:44
