Find out what MNers thought of JimJams 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread! NOW CLOSED

JimJams asked us to find 250 Mumsnetters to test their hazelnut chocolate spread. Each lucky tester was sent one 350g jar of the low sugar spread to share with their families, spread on toast and eat with a spoon. Read the comments below to find out what they thought!

Here’s what JimJams co-founder, Kellie Bath, has to say about the 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread: "As a mum, I was shocked at the amount of sugar found in most chocolate spreads (the equivalent of 57 sugar cubes per 400g jar). I decided to create a range of spreads that tasted amazing but with a fraction of the sugar (83% less sugar than leading brands!).

Our chocolate spreads are available in hazelnut and milk chocolate varieties. They have won Great Taste Awards, are kinder to teeth and are gluten free.

We use Maltitol to sweeten our spreads which is derived from a natural source (not artificial). It has nearly half of the calories than sugar, is kinder on teeth and diabetic friendly.

The tiny amount of palm oil used (one third palm to two thirds rapeseed) is fully sustainable and certified by the RSPO."

  1. oh yes!!! This passed the taste test with flying colours. It is very close in flavour to nutella which is the usual staple im our household. I was pleasantlt surprised!.

  1. To be honest all these products advertising less sugar etc it has to be replaced with something. In this case Maltitol and sweetners. I think i need to do some reading up on these additives, as whilst less sugar is great, replacing it with something that is crap and refined/processed the crap out of, Is imo no better that having the sugared product in the first place. But more and more advertising around less sugar so it is interesting. Im not sure regarding your adcertising Maltitol as a natural product when you have to process it quite a lot inorder to use it in your product. Thats misleading.
  2. One child loved it and the other soso. Husband loved it and i did too so 3/4!
  3. Yes I wont buy it regularly as still like nutella but will change sporadically.
  4. Macademia nut and white chocolate, dark chocolate, and a Must Peanut butter!!
  5. No. I wont swop but will purchase alongside.

Thanks for letting us try though!! I wouldnt have picked it up from the shelf otherwise!

Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?
Yes, my 5 year old loves choc/nutty spreads in general and she liked this one too.

Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?
Yes as I've been looking for an alternative product to the one I used to buy.

Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?
I was expecting a more "artificial" sweetness/taste but it was fine.

Would you purchase this product for your family again?
Yes.

JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?
White choc with desiccated coconut/chopped almond/caramel. Also I would love to buy affordable jams with higher fruit content and less carb/sugar (usually jams have about 60gr of carb in 100ml and they are so packed with sugar you can't taste the fruit and there is really no need)

Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJam
Yes. I will be replacing the other brand with jimjams.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

I gave it my son and he wolfed it down. He was completely unaware that it wasn't Nutella. My husband said that it was quite good but a tasted more oily than Nutella.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product? I was very dubious about this unti I looked at the packaging.

Nutella: 57.6 that saturates 56.8 (per100g)
JimJams 49.4g that saturates 8.7 (per 100g)
When I saw that there was a lot more sugar in my normal brand (I like proof in front of me), it did make me think that swapping to JimJams might be a good idea.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

The main surprise for me was that it was quite runny compared with Nutella.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

It would depend upon where it was available. Moreover, I would prefer I bigger size jar.

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

I wonder if white chocolate might be too sickly. A darker chocolate spread would be pleasant. Mocha spread?

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams? Yes I think we might as long as I can get it where I shop.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes very nice. Far less sweet but with a richer 'dark chocolate' taste. Classier chocolate spread.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Sugar is the main reason I hate buying chocolate spread especially the N variety. I feel slightly better about feeding this to the troops.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

As above, much more grown up flavour not so sickly sweet.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes I would. My 5 year old is already bleating on about it being 'less sugar mummy, can I have more pls'
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

An orange one or perhaps one with something like dried cranberries in or something.

Yes I would/will. The N word is now banned - finally (hurrah) thank you for the opportunity, we had it on pancakes today very yummy

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread? No bitter aftertaste

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again? If the price was right yes

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try? Salted caramel, malted chocolate, fudge, a less sweet version (it was still very sweet) so something more grown up like bitter dark chocolate or just a version that was less sweet

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes very much so, has a lovely texture.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

I would definitely be more inclined to buy it over a different brand for this reason.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

Couldn't taste any difference due to less sugar. The texture was preferable to some spreads, it was a lot easier to spread on plain bread.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes.

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

White chocolate, or perhaps chocolate orange or with chocolate chunks. A plain chocolate spread would be ideal as DD cannot have nuts in her lunchbox due to children allergies.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

I'd be inclined to yes.

Thank you for choosing us to test JimJams.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes, at first it tasted delicious but left a long-lasting unpleasant aftertaste!
  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes, I was very excited to try it because I'd like my family to eat less Nutella (because of the refined sugar & palm oil) but I wasn't thrilled when I realised it featured the artificial sweetener Maltitol as a main ingredient.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

Yes, my child had toast with JimJams spread on it & had some kind of reaction where he started wheezing & then had an upset stomach quite soon afterwards!
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

No, sadly it doesn't agree with us. Also I think that the notice about possible side effects with excessive consumption on the label was too vague. In my opinion he did not consume an excessive amount.
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

No. We've been put off the product.
  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

No, because of the side effects. I'm now off to try to find a choc nut butter without refined sugar & palm oil.

Well I have to confess we haven't tried the jar we received as I was tempted into buying it before I knew I'd been selected for the product test! We're all really impressed with this spread, tastes yummy and I like the lower sugar content and the low level of palm oil. DD (9) read about the low sugar on the jar and commented that she thought it was really good. Still a weekend treat for us but will definitely be sticking with this brand instead of our usual Aldi version.

It was exactly the same as Nutella. Same taste same consistency, everything.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes. I would definitely buy it instead of Nutella, which I only buy as a very rare treat due to massive sugar content.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

I was slightly concerned to see that maltitol is the main ingredient. Given that this is not an ingredient that has any health benefits, and may cause issues for some people, this slightly puts me off.

Absolutely. I thought at first that I could taste the sweetener, but that was only on the very first spoonful and it quickly disappeared. I haven't been able to detect any 'sweetener' taste since.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes. My eldest is autistic and is fussy when it comes to healthy food, but he also has a very sweet tooth. It's difficult to balance his diet, but I feel much better indulging his sweet tooth with JimJams. I would rarely buy full-sugar chocolate spread but I think this is going to become a regular purchase for us.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

Yes - it was wonderfully smooth. No stiffness to it, so no messing around quickly zapping the jar in the microwave like you sometimes have to with other spreads (once all trace of foil is removed!).

Certainly - Nutella is a rare treat in our house even though we all love the taste simply as I worry about all that sugar on little teeth as well as my own waist line. This makes me relax about letting the DC enjoy it more often.
