Find out what MNers thought of JimJams 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread! NOW CLOSED

JimJams asked us to find 250 Mumsnetters to test their hazelnut chocolate spread. Each lucky tester was sent one 350g jar of the low sugar spread to share with their families, spread on toast and eat with a spoon. Read the comments below to find out what they thought!

Here’s what JimJams co-founder, Kellie Bath, has to say about the 83% Less Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread: "As a mum, I was shocked at the amount of sugar found in most chocolate spreads (the equivalent of 57 sugar cubes per 400g jar). I decided to create a range of spreads that tasted amazing but with a fraction of the sugar (83% less sugar than leading brands!).

Our chocolate spreads are available in hazelnut and milk chocolate varieties. They have won Great Taste Awards, are kinder to teeth and are gluten free.

We use Maltitol to sweeten our spreads which is derived from a natural source (not artificial). It has nearly half of the calories than sugar, is kinder on teeth and diabetic friendly.

The tiny amount of palm oil used (one third palm to two thirds rapeseed) is fully sustainable and certified by the RSPO."

Guessing the 'too large' parcel that I missed on Friday is my chocolate spread. Will be picking it up from the delivery office tomorrow!

Tried it again on another child and it is universal approval! 4 children have tried it, all have loved it. DDs friend asked me to send a picture of the jar to her mum so she could buy the right one :)

  1. We loved the taste of JimJams. I'll admit nutella has the edge, but JimJams is more than edible :)

  1. The reduction in sugar is massive. I'm not the type to take their word for it, so compared it to the cadbury choc spread I had in and was shocked at the difference. It will definitely be enough to make me buy this over full-sugar brands.

  1. I was surprised at the huge reduction in sugar, especially combined with the fact this tasted really good!

  1. I would definitely buy this.

  1. NOT white chocolate! Just regular chocolate spread please. Or do you make it already? I'll have to look. I can't take nutella to school (not that my kids live off choc spread sandwiches!) but I tend to buy choc spread over nutella because its "dual-purpose" - home and school lunches.

  1. Yes, I would swap - but especially if there is a regular (nut-free) chocolate spread so its school-safe.

Definitely, we're always looking to reduce sugar
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

It tasted great, it spread much more easily than I'd expected.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes definitely, if it was in my local store and unfortunately also depending on price.
  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Honeycomb or a Toblerone style
  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes we loved the taste, the low amount of palm oil and the significantly lower sugar levels.

Thank you, we really enjoyed this trial!

  1. This has been really popular with the whole family and is really delicious. I also think the texture is smoother than some other chocolate spreads I have tried previously. There's not much of the jar left!
  2. The fact that this has 83% less sugar puts this at the top of my preference list
  3. I was surprised by how good the flavour was for a low sugar version, I would not have known.
  4. I would definitely buy this again
  5. I'd love to see a salted caramel version or chocolate orange.
  6. I would absolutely purchase JimJams in the future in place of my normal brand, was a big hit with my family.

The jar arrived yesterday - a surprise as I hadn't realised I'd been selected. But a very nice surprise. DD found it this morning and insisted on opening it immediately.

  1. The children love it. Verdict from them is 'yummy'. They started off dipping strawberries in it. But quickly abandoned the strawberries in favour of spoons. I've not been allowed near it yet.
  2. Yes
  3. According to DD (6) she was surprised how sweet and smooth it was.
  4. Yes
  5. According to DD, Rolo and white chocolate.
  6. We don't have a usual brand, but I would buy this ahead of other brands (assuming similar price)

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes - I thought it didn't taste that different from Nutella, slightly more intensely chocolate flavoured if anything, but all 3 children say they prefer it.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

I think this is a big motivator to buy it again.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

How chocolatey it tastes. Not much else, I mean it's chocolate spread after all...how surprising can it be?!

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes, depending on cost (and whether it comes in bigger jars - we get through a lot of chocolate spread...

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Chocolate orange flavour would be nice.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes, we all loved it (and I don't like the taste of chocolate usually, and DD won't eat anything with nuts, so a real win).

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

I would usually rather have a product with sugar than with sugar substitutes, so I would need to do a bit more research on the product being used to sweeten the spread.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

It was really smooth to spread, other brands are kind of claggy and end up tearing the bread.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

I probably would, after a bit more research into Maltitol, and how ethical the palm oil used actually is. I am still a bit concerned on both these issues.

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

White chocolate and blueberry, or salted caramel and milk chocolate.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

My DH is very into a rival brand and he says this one is a million times better, so yes!

1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes, DS thought it was lovely. DH sighed when he saw the jar as we don't usually buy chocolate spread but was caught having a surreptitious slice of jimjam on toast after he'd made DS some toast and said that it tasted just like nutella.

2. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

For me, chocolate spread will always be a treat, not a food for every day eating. If the price was comparable, I'd look for this brand over leading brands such as nutella. We very, very rarely buy nutella because of its palm oil and sugar level so we might buy this a bit more regularly but still in moderation.

3. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

Maltitol - I didn't know what it was and had to look it up as it's not a sweetner I'd come across before.

4. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes, as an occasional treat.

5. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Maybe chocolate orange.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?*

I wouldn't say that we have a usual brand, only that many local shops only stock the market leader so it's Hobson's choice if we do want to buy chocolate spread. I'd be happy to swap brands to one that is so much better.

Thank you for asking us to test this out.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

I do feel better about it. I mean I don't love artificial sweeteners either, but at least this is less likely to rot our teeth.
  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

Thought it might taste a bit sweetener-y/artificial or have an aftertaste but couldn't pick this up at all. Also surprisingly easy to spread.
  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes, probably mainly for cooking - it transformed some blueberry muffins.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes indeed. The jar was opened immediately for spoon dipping and was enjoyed not only by my two sons aged 14 and 11 but also by myself and Dh. Initial impressions were good and a more thorough tasting occurred on both bread and toasted muffins. It is less cloying than Nutella and I was surprised at how good it did taste. No after taste either.

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes, we traditionally have a "chocolate Friday" in our house, we enjoy chocolate spread on toast for breakfast. So the fact that this contains less sugar is appealing to us.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

Yes, just how good it tasted and at how easy it spread on bread.

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Yes we would, did I mention chocolate Fridays?

  1. JimJams are thinking about adding some new products to their chocolate spread range. Can you think of any flavours, such as white chocolate, that you and your family would like to try?

Chocolate with raspberry swirled in, chocolate orange or chocolate and mint.

  1. Would you swap your usual brand of chocolate spread for JimJams?

Yes, the sugar content is important for dental health reasons and this would sway me to purchase Jim Jams. Being sugar wise certified is a bonus.

Thanks for letting us test JimJams! Lovely surprised to find a jar waiting for us.

  1. Did you and your family enjoy the taste of JimJams spread?

Yes we did, surprisingly so. It tasted the same, if not better than the leading brand and I was expecting to detect the sweetener (I'm really sensitive to it), but I didn't. One thing though, JimJams - I almost didn't take part in the test myself as your product jar didn't say it was 'Suitable for Vegetarians' - a look at your website revealed it was, but if I'd been in the supermarket it would have affected my buying decisions. If it is, mark it up plese! ... it was lovely though!

  1. Does knowing that JimJams hazelnut chocolate spread contains 83% less sugar than the leading brands make you think differently about purchasing the product?

Yes, and it made me realise just how much sugar is in the others.

  1. Did anything surprise you about the chocolate spread?

That it tasted so good - I was expecting a sweetener tang!

  1. Would you purchase this product for your family again?

Absolutely
