This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who tested the Gift Wink website.

Here's what the team at Gift Wink say: "Gift Wink is a brand new site taking the stress out of buying birthday presents for children. All you have to do is add the birthdays of the important people in your life (especially your nieces, nephews and godchildren), and we take care of the rest. Our team of gift spotting mums source the best and most beautiful gifts from leading high street retailers as well as boutique discovery brands, and then email you birthday reminders with handpicked gift recommendations in plenty of time. Feel supremely organised and make someone's day, and never forget an important birthday again."

Testers, please complete the feedback questions below (and please feel free to add any other comments you may have). All testers who give their feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where three Mumsnetters will each win a John Lewis voucher. The prizes are:

1 x £250 John Lewis voucher
1 x £150 John Lewis voucher
1 x £100 John Lewis voucher

Note added 4 May: As a result of the feedback given by MNers - Gift Wink have asked us to pass on the below -

We would like to say a huge thank you. The level of detail and insight we received from you guys far exceeded our expectations and we genuinely appreciate every single comment we received. We are going to work on a couple of themes of work as a result:

  1. More gift content! We are going to add more gift content, especially in the women and men's sections. A number of you would also like a section with lower priced gifts, so we will add this in too (handy for school birthday parties!).

  1. Filtering the gift suggestions. A lot of you wanted to filter the gifts on price, so this is a priority for us to implement. We are also going to build some gift categories in the women and men sections around themes such as "gardening" or "beauty" or "experiences", so you can filter against the type of gift you want.

  1. There were a few functionality issues that we are need to work on. Not knowing the year of birth was a common issue when you were trying to add in birthday alerts, so we are adding in some age bands so you can still give us a good idea on roughly how old they are (so we can get the gift suggestions right). We are also going to build a better way to serve gift suggestions that match what people's likes and dislikes are.

We're completely committed to building a product that helps you remember important birthdays and browse gift inspiration in the most efficient way possible! Please do let us know if you have any further thoughts or feedback. We'd love to hear from you.

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?

Present reminders and ideas
Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?

The reminders.
Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?

I thought the gift range was very limited and rather too "posh catalogue"or objects and knock knacks, rather than the sort of gifts I give.
Q4. What features could you not live without?

Some sort of search function that helps to narrow down ideas.
Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?

Yes. That would be brilliant. So many good ideas out there.
Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why

Delivery costs need to be either free, or reasonable. Amazon is free and sells many of the things n there so it would need competitive pricing and free or cheap delivery.

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
Pinterest, Amazon, MoonPig
Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?
Easy to navigate, easy to input names/dates, good selection of gifts - I love unusual ideas and they had a few sites I'd not heard of before
Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
The terrible name.
Q4. What features could you not live without?
Do they offer oxygen and water? If not, none.
Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
Yes, if I were to use it, unlikely to though, sorry. Pinterest fills this gap for me.
Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why
Only if it were cheapest on the web (inc p+p)
Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would

  1. It's a nice enough idea, but I already use Amazon for keeping track of gift ideas, I use MoonPig for birthday reminders - and they email me in advance, and I use Pinterest too to collect ideas. But for someone who isn't already signed up to Pinterest/MoonPig, it could help.

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?
Change the name. It's not good!

1: Good idea
2: modern version of the Birthday Books of old
3: more budget friendly gift ideas
4: the reminders at a decent time in advance
5: that would be a really good idea, a place to make a note of gift ideas you see online/instore/word of mouth
6: sadly, they were out of my budget so no
7: 5 (but 10 to my Granny if she was computer literate!)
8: i would have a better range of cheaper gift options. Great items though, they look like very good quality. Also, if someone lives overseas it may be useful to get a reminder earlier to take extra postage time into account, maybe an option for this?

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
it is a very easy and clear website to navigate.

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?
There are lots of presents that you would not find in most websites. It also reminds you of the age and it gives you the opportunity to filter the presents if you write in the person's preferences.
The fact that you can find presents for all genders and ages in one website.

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
add even more choice of gifts.

Q4. What features could you not live without?
its birthday calendar. when you are very busy (work, children, social life, etc...) it is very easy to forget dates / ages. And it is brilliant that the page tells you who is going to be what age with ideas for each person.

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
yes.

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink?
yes as the gifts are different to what you usually see.

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member?

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?

Clear, easy, functional

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?

Gift suggestions, it seems the service provides better imagination than what I hold

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?

I'd love a email reminder perhaps 4 weeks before a Birthday so there was enough time to order presents (especially since some I need to send forward to another country)

Q4. What features could you not live without?

I love the fact that the service shows what age a person is going to be when it's their next Birthday!

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?

Definitely!

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why

If I find a gift that is spot on then definitely

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would

If the gift suggestions are improved to better suit adults in different age groups then yes definitely and I'd say 8

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?

Better ability to edit details (per mistakes) and variety to the gift suggestions especially for grow ups based on different age groups - I don't think my younger brother would want the same gifts as my father in law.

  1. Interesting different useful
  2. Lots of variety and interesting gifts also convenience of remembering key dates for you
  3. Probably have gift age ranges for adults or in different sections like maybe ' gifts for crafters' 'gifts for fashionistas'
  4. Birthday date recordings as I am useless at remembering dates.
  5. I think I would enjoy posting links but it might get out of hand with too many suggestions from different people. It wasn't too overwhelming looking at the range on this site.
  6. I think I would be tempted to buy a gift from this site, although I generally shop around for prices before purchasing.
  7. 8
  8. A quick way to show preferences for certain friends and family and perhaps arrange gifts within age bands or interest bands e.g. Sporty, vintage, geeky, craft.
Report
peakypie · 20/04/2016 23:17

Q1. Unique, easy to use, inspiring
Q2. The range of ideas, not too many to overwhelm, and good range of online stores.
Q3. Give a brief description of the gift along with its price (perhaps remove the store name as not strictly necessary). In some cases I couldn't figure out what the gift was from the picture, for instance the lush unicorn horn bubble bath, so even the words bubble bath would be useful. I don't have time to click on gifts just to figure out what they are.
Q4. Could probably live without it, but I like the diversity of stores where gifts are found from, especially etsy.
Q5. If I had time then definitely, but in practice probably not.
Q6. If it was an ideal present at a reasonable price then yes i would, but feel I would need to research the price before purchase.
Q7. 7. If i thought this site would be of use then i would definitely recommend.
Q8. Include a variety of cheaper gifts, particularly before xmas when stocking fillers are required. Perhaps include ability to filter gifts by price. Include age ranges rather than having to give exact years of birth. Also, allow suitable gift ideas to traverse different groups a bit more (girl/boy and perhaps a year either way).
Lovely site overall and I look forward to getting my first reminder. Thanks for the opportunity!

Everything as very easy to use. Not many topics and choices to choose from... But in a good way.

I like the site and liked that there isn't thousands upon thousands of items. Sometimes to many is daunting and end up 'trawling' for ages!!! So I liked that there is choice but not overwhelming. I also love quirky gifts.

  1. Easy to use

  2. The gift ideas are good. I like the fact that there is a mixture of toys and clothes and that the price and where you can buy it from is clear.

  3. The name, sorry but I just don’t like it!

  4. There’s no features I couldn't live without as there are other means of getting birthday reminders and looking for gifts.

  5. No because I assume you would have to ensure that the gift idea was added to the correct age and I may not have the time. My concern with this is that if a lot of people do this the site may become too cluttered.

  6. I would buy a gift from Gift Wink however I always do price comparisons so would still do that.

  7. 7

  8. You seem to aim your marketing at gifts for children and referring to them being selected by Mums whereas the site is for all ages so perhaps you need to think about ensuring people are aware that it is for all ages and how the ‘handpicked by mums’ fits in and the relevance of this .

It may be a good idea to add extra filters for the adult gifts perhaps based on hobbies/categories or alternatively a search box because I personally wouldn't want to scroll through a load of things if I was looking for a particular item. Perhaps a price filter as well so people can just see things within their budget.

I tried to click on the product thinking it would take me to the store site but it’s only if you click on the review or the product info that it takes you there. The other thing about this is that some sites charge delivery costs so you may see something you think is reasonably priced but becomes too expensive if you have to pay added costs. That is of course unless we can buy directly from your site, then P&P and delivery info needs to be added along with a buy it button!

Should be able to delete someone if you wish to.

When you select both on the browsing gifts screen you can’t see the box for men or women.

Finally I like the layout, which makes it easy to navigate and I do think that the home screen is really great with the candles at the top.

I enjoyed Gift Wink I think it is a fab idea. The only improvement I think would be to the wishlist. It would be good to be able to share on facebook. I often send out invites via facebook as it is easier and less chance of invites getting lost in the post. Most will ask on here what to get my children for their birthday. If I could share it on here rather than just copy and pasting the website that would be great.

Q1 How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
Birthday reminder service and gift suggestion

Q2 What do you like most about Gift Wink?
The birthday alert reminders. The gift suggestions for children are also great.

Q3 If you could change one thing about Gift Wink, what would it be?
A slightly larger selection of gift suggestions. The ones that were there were mostly great, but certain categories were quite limited.

Q4 What features could you not live without?
The alert email reminder

Q5 Would you be interested in posting your own ideas to Gift Wink?
Not really. It would take it to the other extreme of too many suggestions to plough through. Places like chat forums or Pinterest are better suited for sharing ideas.

Q6 Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why.
Yes, if the prices were competitive.

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would.

  1. It would be great for my DH and probably my FIL too - if they ever got round to setting it up of course!

Q8 Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?
The formatting of the page where you enter details of birthdays is annoying. You can't properly see what you are being asked for and then the details you have entered. The box for likes/interests for individuals is a good idea, but it didn't seem to make any difference at all to the gifts suggested! However, it is useful that you can view it later in the birthday person's "profile" and edit it, so that you can always leave yourself reminders of things they have asked for/their current interests that year as a reference. The gifts suggested for adults were too generic with exactly the same things suggested for a 21 year old and a 40 year old. It is generally easy to use and, with the exception I mentioned above, the general layout is pleasant to view. Navigation around the site is pretty intuitive.

2- I enjoyed the uniqueness of the website its not just all one branded. Theres gifts from Amazon, etsy, gap and loads of other companies. Not come across a site like this before!

3- need to be able to refine the options or something as apparently my 24yr old friends and 45 yr old mum will like the same things? I did email in to customer service telling them this as I didn't want to forget lol

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?

Time efficient.

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?

The variety of sources.

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?

I would have items blocked into price points.

Q4. What features could you not live without?

The age reminder, I have to keep a note on calendar what age children will be at their next birthday.

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?

Yes, I can think of several already.

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why

I would if they got themselves registered with a cash-back site.

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?

A little more research is required for the adult lists. Maybe this will be better when customers suggestions are received.

There should be a section for 'Class presents' for the endless birthday parties at primary school and the budget for each one.

A section for 'class teacher' gifts would also be useful. They are hard to buy for.

Suggestions for Gift Vouchers when all else fails. For instance a Smiggle gift voucher would be a useful thing to suggest for a 9yr old if the account holder wasn't aware of the trends for various age groups.

My husband could do with this website when it comes to purchasing gifts for me. A useful edition would be ring size, clothes and shoe size, favourite colours, anniversary suggestions for traditional and modern symbolism (this one we both struggle with)
