This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who tested the Gift Wink website.

Here's what the team at Gift Wink say: "Gift Wink is a brand new site taking the stress out of buying birthday presents for children. All you have to do is add the birthdays of the important people in your life (especially your nieces, nephews and godchildren), and we take care of the rest. Our team of gift spotting mums source the best and most beautiful gifts from leading high street retailers as well as boutique discovery brands, and then email you birthday reminders with handpicked gift recommendations in plenty of time. Feel supremely organised and make someone's day, and never forget an important birthday again."

Testers, please complete the feedback questions below (and please feel free to add any other comments you may have). All testers who give their feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where three Mumsnetters will each win a John Lewis voucher. The prizes are:

Note added 4 May: As a result of the feedback given by MNers - Gift Wink have asked us to pass on the below -

We would like to say a huge thank you. The level of detail and insight we received from you guys far exceeded our expectations and we genuinely appreciate every single comment we received. We are going to work on a couple of themes of work as a result:

  1. More gift content! We are going to add more gift content, especially in the women and men's sections. A number of you would also like a section with lower priced gifts, so we will add this in too (handy for school birthday parties!).

  1. Filtering the gift suggestions. A lot of you wanted to filter the gifts on price, so this is a priority for us to implement. We are also going to build some gift categories in the women and men sections around themes such as "gardening" or "beauty" or "experiences", so you can filter against the type of gift you want.

  1. There were a few functionality issues that we are need to work on. Not knowing the year of birth was a common issue when you were trying to add in birthday alerts, so we are adding in some age bands so you can still give us a good idea on roughly how old they are (so we can get the gift suggestions right). We are also going to build a better way to serve gift suggestions that match what people's likes and dislikes are.

We're completely committed to building a product that helps you remember important birthdays and browse gift inspiration in the most efficient way possible! Please do let us know if you have any further thoughts or feedback. We'd love to hear from you.

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?

A reminder and finder gift service for occasions

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?

I think the site looks good - very clean lines, very modern. And I like the idea.

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?

It would be good if it could be used for other occasions - not just birthdays. Anniversaries would be very useful - not just wedding anniversaries, but significant milestones that may be marked with a gift.

Q4. What features could you not live without?

I don't like this question. There is nothing in life that I can't live without

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?

I might. Especially for older people - as that was pretty poor!

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why

Most probably not. I guess it's a commission website - so prices are more than I would be willing to pay. Also, the gifts recommended to me are very much middle class and more than I would spend on anybody (me included!). It's definitely not designed with people on lower incomes in mind!

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would

  1. I might, but I don't really have any folk I would recommend it to. And if I did, they would know where I might have got my clever ideas from!

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?

A few functionality issues:

The screen where you input the birthdays is annoying, as the columns get smaller and smaller, so you have to click out of it and then back in to be able to input more names. May be an idea to limit it to three inputs then a save.

5 of the 6 birthdays I inputted were for males. But my 87 year old Dad wouldn't appreciate the same gifts as my brother and husband in their thirties. Given that we're giving you ages, it may be worth looking at how many gifts are available for different age ranges.

When you go onto the 'gifts' page, there is no section for 'men'. Pretty big omission!

I'm not hugely keen with having to input names and full dates of birth without knowing its a secure site. So I probably wouldn't use it in the future.

I do however really like the wish-list function. But not the gifts for women. They're all a bit clichéd and samey. Very middle class and expensive.

I think the site is a GREAT idea, but a bit sexist (aimed at Mums, suggestions by Mums) and very yummy-mummy stereotyped. It would be good to see a bit more variety.

Phew - not going to win the voucher, am I?!

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
Tasteful gift inspiration.

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?
I like that the girls' suggestions include science kits and outdoorsy stuff. It's a good start.

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
To search by category rather than age/gender.

Q4. What features could you not live without?
The reminders.

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
That's a fab idea. Like a gifty pinterest. It would have to be limited though, I could imagine it getting a bit cluttered. Less is more.

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why Yes, but I do shop around for the best prices and often go through cashback sites, so it would have to be competitive/incentivised.

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would
10. It's a fab idea.

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?
Advertising the website will be important to it's success and as more users sign up and use it, it will become even more useful with added user suggestions.
Giving people options for what their lists of people likes and dislikes are may be easier than them having to think of things to type in the box.

  1. Good for inspiration.
  2. Gives age appropriate recommendations, different ideas.
  3. An option to put a price range/limit on for the suggestions for each person.
  4. I like the fact it tailors by age.
  5. Not really, no.
  6. It would depend on the price – I’d probably use the ideas to check for a similar thing cheaper as some – not all – of the recommendations are quite expensive.
  7. 5/10
  8. It would be nice to have a filtering option for the suggestions – by price, type of gift etc.

How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
Birthday reminders

What do you like most about Gift Wink?
The potential to be reminded about birthdays in time to do something to mark them.

If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
I'd like the ability to choose how far in advance the reminder is - 2 weeks isn't long enough if I want to buy and post something.

What features impressed you the most?
I think the reminder is what would be most useful to me, although if the gift suggestions turned out to be appropriate for the men in my life I'd be delighted! I can imagine it being useful if you're trying to buy for a child you have no experience of the age/gender of so are stuck for ideas.

Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
I'd like a way to note down ideas for presents when I have them at entirely the wrong time of year then have forgotten by the time I need them.

On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would
8 if they expressed issues with remembering birthdays

Are there any comments or suggestions you’d like to share with Gift Wink
When you have suggestions for boys/girls/both, please can both include everything from both lists. I also entirely missed the men/women suggestions because I'd clicked both at the top and they didn't appear - could both those lists be there?

How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?

Simple. Effective.

What do you like most about Gift Wink?

I like the quality of gifts suggested by the website, they appear to be well tailored and not the usual drab run of the mill gifts you find with similar services.

If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?

I'd like it if you could include a 'don't show this again' type of option so the same thing doesn't crop up again in the suggestions if you know the recipient wouldn't enjoy it.

What features impressed you the most?

The ease of use, quality of gifts and the fact that I may never get into trouble again for forgetting a birthday!

Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?

This was a really quick helpful & easy to use site.
The fact that I have all bdays & special occasions there & will get reminders about upcoming dates (that I as the world's worst aunt/ godmother/friend) always forget to last minute is great & the thing I felt most helpful. & the suggestions/ideas were lovely.
Although I did notice that I would sometimes get the same suggestions for my children's 60 yo grandad & 7 yo son so I would probably try to tweak/change that.
As I said before the reminders of upcoming bdays is a brilliant feature one that makes this app one I want on my phoneSmile
I wouldn't mind posting my suggestions on to gift wink. But I would be concerned that if hundreds of people did that it would turn into another pintrest or it would lose the speed cause you would be wading through too many posts.
I would buy through giftwink for the speed & ease of it. But I would try to price match or shop around for lower price 1st
Definitely be recommending it to friends. It is a really helpful app.
I think if I could suggest anything it would be to get a few more suggestions for the older age groups
Esp the men's range (but that's just a personal things as that's who I struggle the most with!)

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
sophisticated, clever

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?
I expected it to be an online shop and was pleasantly surprised that it is not - it is a service that is useful that then points you to where to buy the items. So it doesn't feel 'pushy' or salesy but like a genuine helper to help you find gifts.

I felt intrigued by the business model as there isn't a fee to use it so i am guessing they get a cut of purchases that are made by following links from their site. I would like to see a bit about how that works in the interest of honesty and transparency.

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
Make it clearer how to buy. It took me a few moments to figure out that i needed to press the 'view product info' to be able to buy the item.

Q4. What features could you not live without?
the birthday calender suggestions.

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
no - i feel like life is busy enough! The whole point of being interested in this is to save time. Sounds selfish but unless i found a real wow gift that i had to tell the world about, i wouldn't find time to suggest ideas.

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why

yes i would consider it. It would need to stay 'top of mind' through the year and that is hard work i'd imagine but the reminder emails would prove useful. I wonder if all the sites it links to for purchase can deliver within that two week timeframe? I know i've had to wait several weeks for orders from some retailers - so is the two weeks long enough?

I will also be interested to see how often they email me.

I am happy to be emailed by organisations that i am interested in but if they abuse my trust by emailing too often i hit the unsubscribe button. Once a month is plenty.

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would

i reckon about a 9. it's worth trying out. I was also pleasantly surprised that it is not just for kids gifts but for older relatives too!

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?

As above. Also enjoyed seeing their facebook feed and twitter account as looks fun to follow.

Q4. What features could you not live without?
The clickable gift suggestions - they give ideas I might not think about - saves my brain from thinking :)
Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
Yes I would, especially if I saw a bargainous item, price dropped on Amazon or a toy a know my daughter enjoyed it was particularly good quality. I think if lots of parents did that it could work really well.

Some things I was amazed by - Junior monopoly at 9? my three year old can play it and follow the rules, probably better suited to a five year old.

Right, I've had a bimble around the site and it's my son's birthday in a few weeks so it was a fairly useful exercise. Here are my answers....

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
Great for ideas.
Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?
The fact that it could turn up a gift - or an idea or theme - which I wouldn't have thought of.
Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
More choice and the ability to list by price.
Q4. What features could you not live without?
Umm, I could live without this webpage, it's quite nice but not essential.
Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
Possibly if I found something super dooper.
Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why
Not from the choices I was given. There were a few things I'd already bought for my son which were similar but I would always compare prices elsewhere and only buy if it was the cheapest.
Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would
8/10 - great for ideas
Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?
More choice needed please.

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
Unique present ideas
Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?
The range of gift ideas - it has given me lots of ideas from websites I wouldn't usually think of, including gift experiences as well as physical gifts.
Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
The suggested presents don't seem to relate to the likes / dislikes listed - it would be good to suggest presents relevant to the recipients' likes.
Q4. What features could you not live without?
Links to retailers' websites making it very easy to buy the suggested gifts.
Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
Yes, some of the best present ideas come from what others have recommended. It would be good for people to share their ideas.
Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why
Yes, I've seen some great ideas for my youngest son's birthday in a few weeks.
Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?
It would be good to have more gift categories based on things other than age - I would love to see suggestions of toys for children with special needs and disabilities.

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?

Quick and easy to use

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?

I liked how it looked. I was a bit sceptical about it, because after all email reminders/online calendars have been around for years, and then of course there are good old paper calendars and diaries. But I quite liked the layout and how it linked to the gift suggestions. It's always useful to have some more present ideas for different ages.

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?

I wasn't that keen on the gifts recommended for my sister (30s) - they all seemed to be quite generic stereotypically female gifts and it suggested a mum book even though she doesn't have any children.

Q4. What features could you not live without?

I could live without the whole website!

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
Possibly.

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why.

I might, but I'd probably tend to shop around for the best price first.

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would

7

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?

See question 3.
