This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who tested the Gift Wink website.

Here's what the team at Gift Wink say: "Gift Wink is a brand new site taking the stress out of buying birthday presents for children. All you have to do is add the birthdays of the important people in your life (especially your nieces, nephews and godchildren), and we take care of the rest. Our team of gift spotting mums source the best and most beautiful gifts from leading high street retailers as well as boutique discovery brands, and then email you birthday reminders with handpicked gift recommendations in plenty of time. Feel supremely organised and make someone's day, and never forget an important birthday again."

Testers, please complete the feedback questions below (and please feel free to add any other comments you may have). All testers who give their feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where three Mumsnetters will each win a John Lewis voucher. The prizes are:

1 x £250 John Lewis voucher
1 x £150 John Lewis voucher

Note added 4 May: As a result of the feedback given by MNers - Gift Wink have asked us to pass on the below -

We would like to say a huge thank you. The level of detail and insight we received from you guys far exceeded our expectations and we genuinely appreciate every single comment we received. We are going to work on a couple of themes of work as a result:

  1. More gift content! We are going to add more gift content, especially in the women and men's sections. A number of you would also like a section with lower priced gifts, so we will add this in too (handy for school birthday parties!).

  1. Filtering the gift suggestions. A lot of you wanted to filter the gifts on price, so this is a priority for us to implement. We are also going to build some gift categories in the women and men sections around themes such as "gardening" or "beauty" or "experiences", so you can filter against the type of gift you want.

  1. There were a few functionality issues that we are need to work on. Not knowing the year of birth was a common issue when you were trying to add in birthday alerts, so we are adding in some age bands so you can still give us a good idea on roughly how old they are (so we can get the gift suggestions right). We are also going to build a better way to serve gift suggestions that match what people's likes and dislikes are.

We're completely committed to building a product that helps you remember important birthdays and browse gift inspiration in the most efficient way possible! Please do let us know if you have any further thoughts or feedback. We'd love to hear from you.

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
Easy, Quick and Simple.
Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?
Ease of use and the fact it shows gifts I maybe would never have considered.
Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
A wider range of gifts as I feel there's really not a great selection.
Q4. What features could you not live without?
Birthday reminders are helpful.
Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
Yes probably.
Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why
I probably wouldn't buy through Gift Wink as I like to search for the best price online. Although if there was something I really liked and it was from a boutique type store etc then of course I would then order it through Gift Wink as I'd be certain I wouldn't find this product cheaper elsewhere.
Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would
I'd say about a 5 as it may be helpful to get some different gift ideas and for the birthday reminders.
Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?
I think there needs to be a wider variety of gifts available and a function to refine your search so you could just look at certain products such as toys rather than it showing you a mix of gift ideas if there was more gifts to show then this feature would be handy. As there's not many gifts though I'd say there's no point for that kind of refine feature just yet. You obviously have the option to choose either gender and refine by their ages too which is good but if there was more choice of gifts a refine option to just search for something specific would be fab.
Thanks 😊

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
A place to input birthdays and receive a variety of suggestions based on age and gender.

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?
I like that you can specify the relationship to you and it has some quirky/X unusual suggestions which is nice to see.

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
I would say what the name of the item is instead of just a price and picture - as sometimes it isn't too obvious.

Q4. What features could you not live without?

Specific to gender and age. I also like it informing you impending birthdays.

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
Sure! If I come up with anything interesting - I'm not the greatest with gifts.

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why
Yes I would. Interesting choice of stuff and reasonably priced for the most part.

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would
I would say a 7. Some very good features but do feel the site is still in its infancy.

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?

Other than the mentioning the name I would also perhaps give an option to store extra details about the person such as shoe/clothing sizes.

Thank you for letting me share my input.
Good luck with your development.

Forgot to add the wish list feature is great and the fact you can put the gift into each person who's birthday is there's wish list is handy that way it's easy to see which gifts in the wish list are for who. Find this very helpful.

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?

Unique, clever, time saving, simple to use

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?

I love the fact that it is easy to use, it reminds me of children's ages and peoples 'big' birthdays. I like the fact it has unusual gifts I wouldn't have thought about myself as well as ones from well known shops and brands. Also like 'experiences' are included like tour of sipsmith distillery for my mum .... Genius suggestion .

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?

Some of the gift ideas are generic and not age specific. Lots of the gift ideas on my mum who is 69 are slso on my friends list. Don't think my mum would like a baby and bump photo shoot !!

Q4. What features could you not live without?

Love that it is linked to websites so you can buy direct, like to think I would shop around whereas in reality I will find reminder, present ideas and 'click' and buy all in one place will be hugely time saving plus make me feel really organised

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?

No, I like the fact it is all taken care of for me

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why

Yes, so easy all being in one place. I have a few things I am thinking of getting!

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would

9 would almost definitely use. Would tell some friends but may keep it my little secret to maintain the illusion that I am super organised and efficient and that I have lots of time to find thoughtful gifts 😜

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?

I would like to add concert or theatre tickets as an option especially for my parents.

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?

Cool and simple.

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?

I did think I was good at buying gifts, but using Gift Wink showed me I've become a bit stale - the suggestions were really great, stuff I wouldn't have thought of. I really, really love it and I think it will make birthdays and such a lot easier.

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?

Some sort of price check - obviously I could just google the chosen item myself, but this would make the service even more efficient.

Q4. What features could you not live without?

None - it's just a really handy website.

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?

I suppose, but I don't want endless options when I'm looking for gifts. I won't get past the first three pages usually. And I want them to be quality gift ideas - not random ideas posted by anyone. They would have to be sifted I think, otherwise it just sort of becomes another Not On The Highstreet, which has way too many options now.

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why

Absolutely.

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would

10!

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?

Please please please don't change it too much - I cannot stress enough how too much choice is not always a good thing! Maybe if a customer needed more options, at that point more info could be input to find an ideal gift but otherwise I think it's great!

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
Timely gift inspiration

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?
The gift suggestions aren't your run-of-the-mill internet shopping / high street ideas - they're quite different, unusual and more personal as a result

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
I'd say you need a few more gift ideas - I soon scrolled to the bottom of the list and wished there were more. Also, could you think about adding a short descriptive line of text below each image of each gift in the list view? As some of them you have no idea what they actually are until you click them - just an idea. Even it if said 'book' or 'CD' that would be a start.

Q4. What features could you not live without?
The gift ideas by age and sex - so simple and so effective. I think especially for people who aren't parents it's so hard to choose presents for family or friends' children at various ages without asking their parents what they'd like, which seems a bit of a shame. The site allows you to do it on your own which is much nicer and you know you're relying on the opinions of people with kids who've made the gift suggestions in the first place.

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
Yes sure

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why
Yes, do I think I would use this - it's a really interesting idea

How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?
Middle Class

What do you like most about Gift Wink?
I think the retailers are interesting, ones I may not have heard of or thought about looking at.

If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?
There isn't really a way to make sure you are getting the best deal, I think I would be more likely to use it for some ideas and then find the best deal on the products elsewhere.

What features impressed you the most?
The range of retailers

Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?
Not really interested. I might be if there were some sort of incentive (vouchers / money off)

Are there any comments or suggestions you’d like to share with Gift Wink
I think the gift suggestions for children are a little too gendered, although the gift suggestions for my son included a few things he had already received as gifts, so on the mark as far as what people (in general) expect to buy for boys.

It has come up as 'obscene' and banned at work ... but when I tried it at home it said 'connection failed'.

Another time it seemed to not work - I was at work - I asked my (highly skilled) IT support for help and they couldn't find the site and asked if I was sure it existed.

Very very strange indeed...

Q1. Clear, clean, quirky, reasonably priced
Q2. The gift ideas. They aren't the usual run-of-the-mill gifts. There are products on there lists which I have actually been trying to source for a while! There are some children (or adults) who you would like to buy something a little different. There is a great selection here.
Q3. Have a budget range too, but still keep it quirky and different (a lot to ask I know!) But there are lots of people who probably have a smaller budget or maybe they have to buy gifts for several people over the same period. If you needed to buy 2 or three gifts there could be a risk of spending a small fortune on here.
Q4. I guess it's not wholly necessary to put the relationship of the person on the form. As you will automatically know that "Jane" is your cousin and its her birthday notification.
Q5. I think this may make it too messy. Also, I don't think I would have the time to do it either.
Q6. Yes, I would. The gift ranges mean you don't have to trawl the internet for gift ideas.
Q7 I think if the recommendations put forward were incorporated I would recommend it (and after I had made my first purchase).
Q8. Try not to put too many examples from Etsy on there. A lot of people might not be familiar with that company so it may put them off.

Q1. How would you describe Gift Wink in a couple of words?

User friendly, birthday reminder and gift search service.

Q2. What do you like most about Gift Wink?

The gift suggestions seem to be nice quality items, things that are a bit different. It’s often tricky to buy presents for people, but the items suggested are a bit more individual and I can see people being pleased to receive them.

Q3.If you could change one thing about Gift Wink what would it be?

It would be great to be able to add a budget/price range for each person. I’m not interested in £75 presents for Uncle x for instance, but might be for DH.

Q4. What features could you not live without?

I think the reminder service will be very useful.

Q5. Would you be interested in posting your own gift ideas to Gift Wink?

Maybe, depending on how easy it is. I keep a list of items I see that I like throughout the year, so that would be useful if it was held on Giftwink too. If I could add gift ideas, I guess I could do that.

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why

I would probably buy a gift from Gift Wink, I’d be checking the price first and it would depend on P&P.

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would

8

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?

Will you be adding an option for Christmas? Just a couple of check boxes on each person’s record with Birthday and Christmas on them and then a page to view just the Christmas shopping list would be handy.

For people whose date of birth you don’t know, could there be an option for rough age? 20-30 40-50 etc? Otherwise you don’t get any gift options.

It would be nice to have a budget option (as I mentioned above) but failing that could the list of gifts be sortable by £?

Thanks for asking me to look at Gift Wink. I’m overall really impressed with it.

Helpful and fun

The ability to save birthdays in one place and having suggestions.

The suggestions, if they were tailored a little better.

Yes. Good idea.

Q6. Would you buy a gift from Gift Wink? If no, please tell us the main reason why
Yes, after price matching to get the best deal (sorry, but would have to).

Q7 On a scale of 0-10 how likely would you be to recommend Gift Wink to a friend or family member? Please use a scale where 0 is would not at all and 10 is definitely would

  1. Would be higher if the age bands were narrower.

Q8. Are there any comments or suggestions you'd like to share with Gift Wink?
I'd like to be able to reject suggestions per person, so it could learn what they might like/not like and offer more and different suggestions accordingly.

Overall comment - it was a little "clunky" to use on my phone, which is probably the device I'd use it on most. A bit slow to respond etc, so I ended up clicking on things I didn't want to see purely as I'd clicked again as I thought it hadn't registered my click the first time (it had, it was just being v slow).

Thanks for the chance to test it. Keep going with refining it - it'll be great!
