Jewish Orthodox Mum Part II AMA

1000 replies

mirah2 · 27/04/2023 17:10

I'm probably letting myself in for it, but here goes...

New AMA to mop up any questions that didn't get answered on the first (full) thread. If you're sure (after reading all of that thread) that your question wasn't answered, or have a new question, please post.

I probably won't have time to reply until after dinner and kids' bedtime.

I am NOT the OP of the original thread. My frame of reference - Modern Orthodox, British (living in UK), convert, mixed race heritage.

Fellow Orthodox Jews of Mumsnet - feel free to crowd share answers, but please remember:

  • this is not the shul kiddush. This is a public internet forum anyone can read
  • please be sensitive and think about how others (Jewish and not Jewish) might interpret what you say. We sometimes have different working definitions of words within our bubbles so be mindful of that.

Go forth and post!

AliceOlive · 28/04/2023 16:35

If anyone happens to have a moment and pops back in, can you tell us what you are cooking?

sadienurse2 · 28/04/2023 16:38

Good shabbos everyone 💐

ashleysilver · 28/04/2023 16:40

Shabbat shalom, good shabbos to all!

Bergmum · 28/04/2023 16:41

I'm sitting waiting to be called in to an appointment having left my husband to finish the clean up and supervise bathtime for the kids.
I've made matzoh balls and cooked noodles for the chicken soup (soup came out of the freezer this week) made challos, cooked farfel and cholent and done some baking as well (cake n cookies) hub did the fish n salad this week

Maireas · 28/04/2023 16:46

Home-made chicken soup! Mmmm....
Shabbat shalom!

Bergmum · 28/04/2023 16:53

Always homemade. Has to be 😉 along with the challos

Bergmum · 28/04/2023 16:54

Have a wonderful shabbos! Gut shabbos or shabbat shalom.

Your cookies would go well with my bagels.

You just reminded me about the stewed liver I made as well. I put my eggs into the cholent cos that's how my family like them.
I made kugel yesterday and bought some dips as well.
Got pear compote for desert and ice cream for the kids for tomorrow but parev ice cream isn't worth the calories.

samG76 · 28/04/2023 17:12

Ben & Jerry's parev phish food is pretty good. Better than Swedish glace!

AliceOlive · 28/04/2023 17:21

It all sounds so lovely. Thank you for sharing these wonderful details about your lives here with us.

Shabbot Shalom

Maireas · 28/04/2023 17:27

@jewishorthomum - so because you're having chicken, your ice cream dessert must be dairy free, right?
Great menu!

I think that's how Edot Hamizrach have their eggs. Are you or your husband Sfaradim?

Ooh I love Shabbos dinner!! Shabbat Shalom

DorotheaDiamond · 28/04/2023 18:09

Shabbat Shalom and thank you to all the fabulous women on this thread who are doing an amazing job explaining Judaism.

You all remind me of my oldest friend sadly departed. She had a truly beautiful soul, a personal connection to Hashem. She was Charedi but never once made me feel
any less for my lack of observance or my non Jewish husband. A proper demonstration of a good person.

Spudlet · 28/04/2023 18:22

Well, I keep dipping into this and am finding it continually fascinating. I will probably have another question later (would love to know from the ladies on this thread how I might best accommodate them in my business, for example) but for now, have a wonderful, peaceful day, enjoy all the delicious sounding food, and perhaps we can continue this afterwards?

Tygertiger · 28/04/2023 18:44

As a non-Jew, I’m really feeling connected to the women on the thread enjoying their Shabbats tonight. I can picture you all with your families enjoying your delicious food and spending time together. Thank you so much to the women who have shared experiences, I’ve learnt so much and it’s been a privilege to find out about your lives.

sadienurse2 · 28/04/2023 19:20

Obviously this thread will be quiet until after shabbat, if you want to check out any shabbat videos I follow Sonya's Prep, Frum it Up and Jar of Fireflies on YouTube. They are all orthodox sephardi Jews, the third is a convert. Frum it Up does videos on all sorts of issues relating to life as an orthodox jewish woman, she even did a mikveh tour.

TheShellBeach · 28/04/2023 20:38

Respectfully, are you at all interested in Judaism or are you just trying to be rude? And in any case, how is this a woman's issue?

How Jewey, of all people, can have the nerve to ask PP if she's "trying to be rude" is just unbelievable.
Nobody else on this thread is being rude other than Jewey!

The question PP asked was addressed to the women on the thread because that is what this thread is about - women's experiences as Jews.

So sick of men trying to lay down the law on MN threads.

MatchesinEyes23 · 28/04/2023 20:50

Another non-Jew here just dropping in to say what a fascinating thread! My grandfather was Jewish so I’ve always been fascinated by the religion.
So many aspects I wish were more commonplace in my life… observing peace, quiet and family time every Friday sounds so nice. Sadly I just don’t think it will ever be feasible for me, however reading this has made me feel much more mindful as to how I spend my time, and the importance of downtime from work, phones, screens/social media etc.

I’m also at a loss as to why a man would ever be on Mumsnet. Especially a thread specifically about women’s opinions/issues. My husband couldn’t think of anything worse!
No man ever knows how a woman feels, no matter how much talking goes on.
hopefully this thread will continue after Shabbat with more positive, informative discussion.
