Oh dear. I'm sorry. Has he been sacked, or made redundant? That makes a difference. Did he get any form of pay off?

kazzawazzawoo · 08/06/2014 17:55

He needs to ring the job centre and apply for job seekers allowance. They will deduct your income from what he is entitled to, but he should still get something. You can also apply for free school meals, free bus pass for travel to school, tax credits, and after 6 months you can get part of your mortgage paid (but only interest). Don't assume you will get these things automatically you will need to ask or apply online.

KillmeNow · 08/06/2014 18:00

The turn to us benefit calculator will help you find out . Put into the calculator what your income will be from now on.

Dont include any potential benefits at this point ,the calculator will indicate what your family will be entitled to claim.

KillmeNow · 08/06/2014 18:04

You can only apply for Jobseekers by going online now.

Go to GOV.UK and follow directions.

He can start the claim today if he has not been paid in lieu of notice. Also contact the housing benefit office first thing tomorrow as you might lose out on benefit by delaying.

KillmeNow · 08/06/2014 18:13

Sorry - missed the part about the mortgage.Ignore my advice to contact housing benefit in that case.

felttippens · 08/06/2014 18:25

My wage is very low - less than 4k (part time self employed)

He claimed job seekers on Friday but I think it's contributions based therefore not able to access means tested benefits as I understand it

He was sacked, after 6 months suspension from fairly senior role in nhs - so he can't actually find similar job as he won't be able to work in same field

He's dealing with it by drinking and smoking dope and sticking his head in sand

I'm out of my mind with worry and disappointment in him

He's dealing with it by drinking and smoking dope and sticking his head in sand that's mature Hmm. Do you have savings/assets ? Could you find some salaried work as well?

notapizzaeater · 08/06/2014 18:29

He might be sanctioned depending on what he's been sacked for Sad

felttippens · 08/06/2014 18:33

What does sanctioned mean?

LIZS - tell me about it !

notapizzaeater · 08/06/2014 18:35

Sometimes they stop the benefits depending on reasons for sacking

felttippens · 08/06/2014 18:45

This was being caught in possession of drugs 5 yrs ago but failing to declare it

OP posts:
ssd · 08/06/2014 18:48

hell mend him then

felttippens · 08/06/2014 18:48

Sorry?

OP posts:
ssd · 08/06/2014 18:51

were the drugs for his use?

SandorClegane · 08/06/2014 18:52

Massively unsympathetic ssd. He doesn't sound like much of a husband though, does he have a drug and alcohol problem? If he's not willing to do anything about that you might be better off as a single parent financially and well, generally. Poor you op and your poor kids.

ssd · 08/06/2014 18:54

I know, but I have little time for drug users

I'll save my sympathy for his wife and kids

SandorClegane · 08/06/2014 18:54

Yeah and they're the ones that are suffering and it's his wife that's posting.

ssd · 08/06/2014 18:57

and?

I wrote hell mend him, in case you didn't notice.

Waltermittythesequel · 08/06/2014 18:58

LTB.

And I'm not being flippant. He sounds like a total wanker.

SandorClegane · 08/06/2014 18:58

It's not a particularly helpful or sympathetic response, in case you didn't notice.

slartybartfast · 08/06/2014 19:04

oh dear, one of you or both of you will ahve to work full time.

ssd · 08/06/2014 19:05

whatever sandor.

op, I'd get myself down to citizens advice first thing if I was you.

felttippens · 08/06/2014 19:05

My head is completely mashed with it all - I struggle with depression and I'm struggling to keep my head clear

He has always been prone to 'smoking' it's landed us in relate before and he successfully stopped, this previous caution came back to haunt us when he applied for promotion (which he got) in his field in the nhs
Since the suspension he's fallen back into it and I just hate it

I am very sad for him as he has always been hardworker has two degrees and 10 years exemplory service to the nhs and now he has blown it all and has no other experience or skills (it's very specific what he does/did)

slartybartfast · 08/06/2014 19:06

unemployment benefit lasts for 6 months, is contributions based, so i imagine unless he has claimed unemployment benefit a lot, he shoudl be entitled to it, and then after 6 months it is means tested.
as far as your mortgage goes,I have no idea.

felttippens · 08/06/2014 19:06

I am working pretty much full time in my business but profits have been v low recently
