Civil unrest, what's really going on?

My DH keeps chirping up with, there's riots here, protests there, immigrants have done assaults in xxx etc. He sees me as a bit of a do-gooder..

All UK places, but when I look at my regular news, there's very little reporting of it.

My DH has some MH issues currently and to confront him with 'what the heck are you reading?' isn't worth it right now.
I make comments such as, ooh that sounds grim and doesn't sound good, and that's very worrying, but I'd really like to know if it's really happening and where he's getting this info.

It’s pretty scarey how incompetently our government is dealing with this. They really don’t have a clue about the increasing strength of feeling about what’s currently happening. Or they really just don’t care. Starmer needs to get a grip. And fast. Otherwise he’s going to have a big problem on his hands.

I do agree with you that it needs to be taken in hand and it should have been years ago.
We have to take some immigrants but Britain needs to quash the idea that the UK is the land of milk and honey.

abracadabra1980 · 03/08/2025 23:57

@LivelovebehappyI totally agree with you. I live in a professional area up north, and have a business dealing with people who are probably a mainly ABC1 demographic - and they have had enough. Regardless of past political allegiances, they are sick and tired of woke; sick and tired of lying by both main parties, fed up of the UK’s own citizens not coming first. ‘S these are people who CAN put bread on the table.

there were several peaceful protests in my area over the last few days at hotels that are being used to house asylum seekers. Nothing on the news at all.

a local to me young lady was stabbed to death by a resident outside the asylum seekers hotel that she worked at. She was stabbed multiple times and left to die, wasn’t found for hours. Nothing on the news. Local news did report on it but scantily.

there’s a lot of unrest where I live. I think the press etc are trying not to fan the flames.

Did that happen in Walsall?

We’re not far away and there was a protest outside the hotel being used in our town yesterday.

@Spookyspaghetti This is possibly what is being talked about.

The BBC website had a story about the Nuneaton kidnap/attempted murder case then pulled it. I find that incredibly worrying as it's clear that someone in govt is exerting pressure on the national broadcaster. It's so stupidly counterproductive and just stokes people's fury. Nothing even on the local news page that I can see.

Bloody hell. Was it archived?

UYN · 04/08/2025 00:02

I'd say it was more of a safety ruling in the interest of national security, for everyone's safety.

Riots damage people, livelihoods and communities.

Now why on earth would the media risk reporting and instigating the ridiculously violent rioting that happened this time last year?? Don't you remember the absolute bellends that came out onto the streets?

I think they are being cautious. For all your sakes.

X is a sewer that explicitly, intentionally promotes far right twaddle and that's owned by a man who wants civil war in the UK.

Immigrants are less, not more likely to commit crimes.

How i wish that was the case

WaryCrow · 04/08/2025 00:03

It’s a statement of fact that journalism no longer has the capacity to report in half of what goes on. Politicians have been expressing concern over the state of regional news for some years and that was before covid. Computers are being used to kill employment and there simply are not the numbers of people there were in the sector. Much news is recycled press releases, in other words, what they’re told to print.

It’s not that long ago that there were street battles being fought by gangs in little India, aka Leicester, that took 3 weeks to come to headlines. There’s a lot goes on that no one hears about.

TheWalkingDead81 · 04/08/2025 00:03

All these crimes which are going unreported, how are you finding out about them?

@Showerflowers from your post, I assumed you were taking about a recent stabbing that was not widely reported. I remember reading in the news about the case that @MadisonAvenue links to here though. It was very sad and shocking, but it’s not recent and was widely reported - as it should be.

Yes, why tell the public the truth when they might get angry about small children being kidnapped, raped and murdered? That’s the real ‘national security’ dilemma.

abracadabra1980 · 04/08/2025 00:03

@LivelovebehappyI totally agree with you. I live in a ‘nice’ area and have a business in an ABC1 area and believe me people are absolutely sick of both parties lying, wokeness in general and not looking after their own citizens first. And open borders are REALLY bothering people. I have men who are my customers who say they feel as a white British gentleman, they feel demonized in this country. It’s not good.

TheWalkingDead81 · 04/08/2025 00:03

They are being reported but selectively and in smaller news outlets. You need to be careful to fact check (ie, don’t believe something posted on X unless a news source backs it up).

There's plenty of UK citizens killing, raping and murdering babies and children, every couple of months another story.

Why does no-one get angry and protest about that?

From where is the evidence that you are basing that statement on please? (Immigrants are less, not more, likely to commit crimes).

Because the decision to allow them access to their victims wasn’t one actively taken by our government?

Rosybud88 · 04/08/2025 00:08

If you want to know what is actually going on in this country - head to X. There were large protests on Saturday in London, Manchester, Newcastle and Waterlooville. There may have been others but that is just what I saw. There were issues in London today where dispersal orders were supposedly given.

General view = other countries view the UK as a laughing stock. General belief that we are living in a 1984esque era and the government is overstepping their mandates re free speech and our right to protest. A lot of anger towards censorship and lack of safety for women and children.

I can't even find the evidence that I was reading about earlier @JamesMacGill Unless I am going cuckoo I did read this morning that the BBC had reported it then it had disappeared. Very odd.

Can you link to the local news story?

I live in a fairly diverse and big city and haven’t seen any protests or unrest. The majority of crime round here tends to be caused by British born people with substance addiction problems or board teens.

The key thing that jumps out of the Op is that the DH is suffering with mental health problems. There are some legitimate concerns over asylum seekers and lack of resources and crime etc but, unfortunately, the types of groups who post about immigration online and put videos on YouTube rely on targeting the most vulnerable. There is a lot of misinformation and a lot of conspiracy which will be especially bad for someone with mental health issues who is trying to decipher reality.

People say ‘why is it not reported in the press.’ There is a framework for checking sources and making sure reporting is accurate. A professional, legitimate news source has to run stories past lawyers etc and false stories could result in legal action. If there was loads of stuff genuinely going on it would be reported on, even if it was predominantly a local issue. There has been plenty in the press over the past week about what has gone on with the asylum hotel in London and Newcastle.

In the case of a murder, if the suspect is awaiting trial, there won’t be anything else in the press until the verdict otherwise they risk prejudicing the case and the case possibly collapsing. That would not be in the best interest of the victims family.

Op, if it is safe to do so and won’t put you in physical danger, I personally would be gently challenging him on what he says. Ask for his source of information and suggest he looks at the situation from different perspectives. It’s ok to not be pro immigration but it’s not ever ok to be a bigot. Conspiracy theories won’t be helping his state of mind. Make sure he is taking any medication he needs to be taking to.

You seem nice, but also fantastically naïve. I wish I could join you in your little bubble.
