Civil unrest, what's really going on?

Sadworld23 · 03/08/2025 17:02

My DH keeps chirping up with, there's riots here, protests there, immigrants have done assaults in xxx etc. He sees me as a bit of a do-gooder..

All UK places, but when I look at my regular news, there's very little reporting of it.

My DH has some MH issues currently and to confront him with 'what the heck are you reading?' isn't worth it right now.
I make comments such as, ooh that sounds grim and doesn't sound good, and that's very worrying, but I'd really like to know if it's really happening and where he's getting this info.

No but it's got to be handled properly.
Violence is never going to solve it .
The Nf , BNP,C18 boot boys accomplished nothing by terrorising for the most part vulnerable/weak targets.

But doesn’t it tell you something when people are now resorting to increasing volatile protesting? Because they’re not being listened to by the government. Violence never solves anything, but neither does asking for action either it seems….

But it’s no longer the ‘extreme right’. It’s your normal average person who are now finding their voice, where once upon a time, they would be quietly nodding their head in the background.

Where's the protests when violence, rape , murder is perpetrated by white males.

what’s the point of protesting about this? The perpetrators are arrested and face the justice system. Nothing else we can do.

People are protesting about the immigrant rapists, because we don’t want to import rapists and murderers when we already have to sort out our own home grown ones…..simple as that really.

And you think that none of the protesters have never lifted a hand to a woman or child.
Male violence is an issue in this country.

There was a huge protest in Manchester, and canary warf

Where and when in Canary Warf? I have not seen anything

Ikkikikki · 03/08/2025 23:37

local to me a young man was arrested a few weeks ago for carrying a knife, wandering around local shops at 8.30am, locals caught on video & pictures. Truly terrifying.
week or so later two men fighting & one injured, with a machete, new tenets housed in a well established area. Both incidents happened near schools.
if you google the area, the images come up. Both incidents made the local paper and that’s it. Residents are terrified.
i believe there is a fear in reporting, and totally understand why due to fear of rioting on the scale of this time last year. The amount of racism, bigotry, homophobia etc, absolutely fuelled by the media was terrifying.
what’s happening in my area is also terrifying.
fleeing from war I can’t even begin to imagine how terrifying.
don’t know what the answer is is .

Midnightlove · 03/08/2025 23:39

Well I'm sorry but paying for thousands upon thousands of young undocumented migrants, most from countries that have little to no respect for women isn't something I agree with. What happened to the country being broke? No money for the NHS, oh we'll just cut from pensioners/disabled or tax people more to pay for these individuals that the majority of people dont want here. On top of it, hearing about young girls getting harassed/raped and the government trying to hide it, nevermind actually deal with the problem is pretty much the final straw for lots of people. That doesn't make me far right.

That’s irrelevant because it’s all whataboutery. On a scale of likelihood of some of the protestors being women or child abusers, it’s probably highly unlikely just because people who are protesting against rape, molestation and murder, are hardly going to be doing it themselves.

Midnightlove · 03/08/2025 23:42

I appreciate people being in fear when incidents you describe happening and they shouldn't and have to be dealt with.
It's certain sections of the media etc whipping things up.
Yes it most definitely should be reported but in a responsible manner and not in the style of a BNP newspaper when it was on the go.

So if male violence is already a problem in this country, what are your views on shipping thousands of undocumented young men uk wide , with derogatory views of women, to live within our communities?

And who do you think will manage it properly?

What is a ‘responsible manner’? Size 6 font on page 32? Newspapers aren’t actually allowed to print outright falsehoods, and in crime articles the facts speak for themselves. No amount of ‘responsible reporting’ will make a small boat arrival wandering around the supermarket with a bladed article unalarming.

@Sadworld23 , it’s really happening. If you want to know the truth don’t rely on Sky and the BBC.

Itstwelveoclocksomewhere · 03/08/2025 23:45

There have been numerous incidents in my nearest city.

The reporting has been very low key. People tend to post videos on FB and that is how I know about it. I rarely go into the city now and know many others who are the same. Perhaps its businesses nearby who ask for it not to be reported although its in various parts, not any one part in particular.

There are loads of protests in the city which I only know about because I know someone who attends some of them. . I don't go and wouldn't go and because the media don't report them, unless you are there, or subscribed to groups who organise them, you wouldn't know about them.

The britannia international apparently had coach loads of migrants bussed in the other night at half 1 in the morning. There was a protest today and I think yesterday too

Spookyspaghetti · 03/08/2025 23:46

Showerflowers · 03/08/2025 17:33

there were several peaceful protests in my area over the last few days at hotels that are being used to house asylum seekers. Nothing on the news at all.

a local to me young lady was stabbed to death by a resident outside the asylum seekers hotel that she worked at. She was stabbed multiple times and left to die, wasn’t found for hours. Nothing on the news. Local news did report on it but scantily.

there’s a lot of unrest where I live. I think the press etc are trying not to fan the flames.

Can you link to the local news story?

I live in a fairly diverse and big city and haven’t seen any protests or unrest. The majority of crime round here tends to be caused by British born people with substance addiction problems or board teens.

The key thing that jumps out of the Op is that the DH is suffering with mental health problems. There are some legitimate concerns over asylum seekers and lack of resources and crime etc but, unfortunately, the types of groups who post about immigration online and put videos on YouTube rely on targeting the most vulnerable. There is a lot of misinformation and a lot of conspiracy which will be especially bad for someone with mental health issues who is trying to decipher reality.

People say ‘why is it not reported in the press.’ There is a framework for checking sources and making sure reporting is accurate. A professional, legitimate news source has to run stories past lawyers etc and false stories could result in legal action. If there was loads of stuff genuinely going on it would be reported on, even if it was predominantly a local issue. There has been plenty in the press over the past week about what has gone on with the asylum hotel in London and Newcastle.

In the case of a murder, if the suspect is awaiting trial, there won’t be anything else in the press until the verdict otherwise they risk prejudicing the case and the case possibly collapsing. That would not be in the best interest of the victims family.

Op, if it is safe to do so and won’t put you in physical danger, I personally would be gently challenging him on what he says. Ask for his source of information and suggest he looks at the situation from different perspectives. It’s ok to not be pro immigration but it’s not ever ok to be a bigot. Conspiracy theories won’t be helping his state of mind. Make sure he is taking any medication he needs to be taking to.

dizzydizzydizzy · 03/08/2025 18:52

There are obviously going to be some crimes committed by asylum seekers , partly because some people are criminals and partly because they are living wirh a vast amount of stress, they are vulnerable and desperate. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I didn't have a permanent home and didn't know if I would be allowed to stay in the country. My mental health would probably be terrible.

On the other hand, I would imagine that asylum seekers are often the victims of crime - racist hate, abuse from traffickers, gang masters and dodgy landlords.

@dizzydizzydizzy , FFS! 😡

Process and deport if they don't qualify.

Why do you feel the media is ‘whipping’ things up? Surely, they’re just presenting facts. Or are you suggesting the facts should be buried so as to keep us all obliviously going about our day, not being kept informed of this going on, on a regular unreported basis it seems….

1diamondearing · 03/08/2025 23:47

I don't know that it is deliberate or coordinated. Only a very tiny number of rapes or knife attacks are ever reported.

abracadabra1980 · 03/08/2025 23:47

MyDeftHedgehog · 03/08/2025 23:28

Its not being reported in MSM because Starmer doesn't want us to know what's really going on. They didnt initially report the ethnicity of the perpetrators of the 12 year old girl raped, because they didnt want to things to kick off. It will kick off big time soon I'm pretty sure

Agree. The lying by Governments these days is appalling. That’s both Conservative AND Labour.

The language used in one online paper is straight out of The BNP handbook and do you really think that helps.
Who got the juicy contracts to supply the hotel's because this was happening long before Labour.

It’s pretty scarey how incompetently our government is dealing with this. They really don’t have a clue about the increasing strength of feeling about what’s currently happening. Or they really just don’t care. Starmer needs to get a grip. And fast. Otherwise he’s going to have a big problem on his hands.

SadSadTimes · 03/08/2025 23:54

Someone upthread said this was the far right pushing their agenda. This is not just a far right problem. Wes Streeting's offices were attacked by a far left group. What happens in this country should be reported, fairly, whatever the political leanings of the perpetrators.

This isn't happening and I worry about WHY.

Who is it supposed to be ‘helping’ in your view? Not the perpetrator surely?
