Absolutely not. But I think saying 'for all I care' means 'i don't mind if you do' rather than 'go and do it now'.

I have never argued she shouldn't be punished, just that this is not on the level of the sentence.

Where I was staying after October 7th people were openly celebrating, waving flags from cars. I know it's complicated but celebrating deaths was deeply unpleasant to witness (and that was before everything that has followed). And yet I've seen no arrests.

My argument is not that she shouldn't be punished but that by giving such a sentence when it is not applied universally creates division and a narrative the far right will exploit.

You’re genuinely saying there were no arrests made? Have the rest of us imagined all the people who were arrested, and many either found guilty or entered a guilty plea.

You think people who don’t mind non-white people being burned alive are just typing silly little rants?

What she did was wrong and she should be punished in some way. I think the sentence is far too severe though.

How should people who encourage others to burn people alive be sentenced in your view?

DanielaDressen · 17/10/2024 18:23

Delighted. They found multiple racist messages in her social media going back years. Even after that last awful one she was laughing saying she’d get off as she’d claim mental health issues, etc. no remorse and I agree people were potentially put at risk of being killed because of her messages.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 17/10/2024 18:27

Good.

Lock up the racists.

newnamethanks · 17/10/2024 18:27

Shes an appalling person, a racist, a bigot, an instigator. Apparently she "regrets" her behaviour. I expect she does. Now.

I don't know the sentencing guidelines but there is community service, suspended sentences or a shorter prison sentence than what she received.

Comedycook · 17/10/2024 18:34

But I'm not going to defend what she did. She needs to be punished...just seems like such a long sentence

I'd say two and a half years for calling for the murder of a hotel full of people is pretty low

hattie43 · 17/10/2024 18:39

I think she had a visceral reaction to the little girls being murdered and lost her mind . Especially as a mother . What she wrote was disgusting but she hadn't done it before and people who assault others don't get custody , what irks is that Huw Edward's gets no sentence for being a paedo yes a tweet gets 31 months .

lolly792 · 17/10/2024 18:41

Anyone trying to minimize or excuse her vile racist behaviour is unbelievable!

As for using her dead child as some sort of mitigating factor - words fail me. But I suppose that's what defence lawyers do. And saying she'd play the mental health card. Not just vile but clearly very scheming about it too

I was very upset by it, I managed to not be racist though

I had a visceral reaction to her calls to burn innocent people alive in a hotel.

It’s a fucking appalling thing to call for. You understand the reality of this don’t you? That people set fire to a building in which people were trapped by hoards of violent thugs? That’s what she called for. The woman needs punishing severely.

HowYouSpellingThat10 · 17/10/2024 18:48

I don't think anyone here has defended what she has said.

But I think you are being naive if you think every bloody awful tweet has been punished to this degree.

And that is where my issue lies, with what that whips up in it's wake.

Redebs · 17/10/2024 18:49

I do wish more of these anti-immigrant hate mongers were convicted, actually. There's been a real explosion of racist comments on social media and it's stoking hate and terrorist violence.

SweetSakura · 17/10/2024 18:54

Lots of us had a visceral reaction to the Southport murders.

It's no excuse for stirring up racial hatred.

It seems a proportionate sentence.

StaunchMomma · 17/10/2024 18:55

GOOD!

This behaviour is ramping and will only worsen if not treated seriously.

You can't incite violence like that and expect to get away with it.

Absolutely. It's the same with the current explosion of Starmer hate, even on sites like this.

These people have zero tolerance for anything but their own.

Menopausalsourpuss · 17/10/2024 19:04

I think it will be interesting to see what sentence that councilor who called for peoples throats to be cut gets (cheered on by "anti fascists") as to me that was very similar.

AgnesX · 17/10/2024 19:05

Oh good. She should have known better. She wnt do anywhere near it though 🙄

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 17/10/2024 19:05

after calling for hotels housing asylum seekers to be set on fire.

Somebody with a reasonably high profile in the community and married to an MP inciting arson and murder is pretty serious, more so than the average Jo with no influence doing the same. Her other posts about “deport asylum seekers” etc I agree fall into the “free speech even if you don’t like what’s being said” category - but not that.

Not married to an MP.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 17/10/2024 19:11

Pleased with the sentence. Unimpressed with those who are suggesting that she didn't deserve it.

newnamethanks · 17/10/2024 19:16

And here are the apologists: she didn't mean it, she hadn't done it before, she's a mother, sentence too long, etc. She did mean it. She has a long history of meaning it. She had done it before, she is, shamefully, a mother herself, so I ask you, those who think she's been treated unfairly, what's your preference? Choose, would you prefer to be burned to death with your family while nutters cackle and laugh as you go up in smoke or would you rather just sit in the nick for a short period? She's got off lightly.
