Yvette Cooper’s husband was given Taylor Swift tickets worth hundreds of pounds and he invited his wife. Following this Ms Swift was given security she worth millions she might not have necessarily expected to receive. The Labour sleaze just does not let up!

@Icanthinkformyselfthanks the police work with the Home Secretary and the mayor. What about this is hard for you to understand

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 10/10/2024 15:14

itwasnevermine · 10/10/2024 13:10

@Icanthinkformyselfthanks the pressure placed on the met for extra security because it came so soon after a legitimate terror threat.

@itwasnevermine emphatically not! Because Ms Swift wanted motorcycle outriders and traffic stopped for her. There is in any case absolutely no excuse for pressure coming from Khan and Cooper because as they will be very well aware the police are meant to be independent and not influenced by politicians.
Im sure you’re able to understand the issue, I know it’s inconvenient that so many left wing politicians have been behaving in rather grubby ways when the electorate were promised a different kind of politics.

@Icanthinkformyselfthanks do you have a source for this?

It has been common for her to have police escorts. It happened in Cardiff, Edinburgh, and various other cities. It was absolutely valid for her to get one in London after an active terror threat.

itwasnevermine · 10/10/2024 15:20

Of course they're not.

Farage's £32k in tickets to the USA to cosy up to Trump have been ignored for the absolute outrage of the Home Secretary and mayor of London doing their job!

Trixiefirecracker · 10/10/2024 15:21

Yes but what about the Taylor Swift tickets?!!!!

Notonthestairs · 10/10/2024 15:39

Cancellation of any of the tour would have been a financial blow for a number of businesses. I am very glad it was able to go ahead. I went to the last show and there was an extraordinary police presence.
I assumed we would have offered a police escort given the threats in Austria and the attack in Southport.

She certainly had a police escort in Edinburgh - why wouldnt she have one in London?

Fairslice · 10/10/2024 15:43

itwasnevermine · 10/10/2024 14:50

@Fairslice then stop saying it was her? I'm sorry but all of you who are so offended by this but didn't care when the tories stole billions of public money are hilarious

What a patronising and ridiculous comment.

I voted Labour because I was totally sick of the Tories.

Labour's first 3 months has been shocking and the budget looks like it's going to be an omnishambles

Rummly · 10/10/2024 15:43

I can’t get worked up about an ex-MP second-rate TV presenter blagging some tickets to see Taylor Swift and taking his politician wife along, while Tay got some fat coppers on motorbikes to help her to the concert.

But it’s pretty obvious that had this happened under the Tories it would have been screamed about by Labour as ‘sleaze’. It’s Labour’s rank hypocrisy that’s so revealing.

You don't seem to understand how counter-terrorist policing works in London - it's entirely normal and part of the role of the Home Secretary and the Mayor of London - no matter what party they belong to

In the light of the terrorist threat in Vienna a few days before it would be re-miss of any HS or mayor whatever their party not to be involved in the issues of security in London

Also you keep ignoring the security arrangements in other UK cities which several posters have mentioned - even before the Vienna threat

ThePoshUns · 10/10/2024 15:48

I don't care!!! This is just the right wing press trying to make us all think that the labour government is a bad thing. They are still better than what we had before!

PandoraSox · 10/10/2024 15:51

ThreeFeetTall · 10/10/2024 14:21

Presumably this has been known about for a while so I guess the question is why is guido Fawkes releasing this today?

To distract from the fact that the Tory leadership contest has descended into an omnishambles?

Imagine if security for Taylor Swift hadn't been high and there had been an incident. People would have wanted heads on sticks.

Theonewhogotaway · 10/10/2024 15:52

JanglingJack · 10/10/2024 14:04

@1990s was correct in asking whether you really understand the issue.

Credible terrorist threat.
3 little girls murdered at TS themed party
Manchester Arena.

Looks like you picked the wrong theme to bash Labour.

Quit glue whilst you're at it.

So your opinion is the met is not capable of assessing security risks and making decisions on what is required in the capital. They need Yvette cooper and sadiq khan to over see it, and do it for them. And that accepting hundreds and hundreds of pounds oc free hospitality after it are all ok.

i get more and more distant dyed in the wool Labour fanatics ever day. If that’s your politics then we will never align.

Notonthestairs · 10/10/2024 15:54

So who ordered the police escort in Edinburgh?

BobLemon · 10/10/2024 15:57

Just me that’s cringing at all the “Ms Swift”s? WTFDYTYA

A politician accepted a freebie? Bahahahahahhaahhahahahahahhahahahh

PandoraSox · 10/10/2024 15:58

Honestly, there are plenty of reasons to bash Labour, but this isn't one of them.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 10/10/2024 15:58

So your opinion is the met is not capable of assessing security risks and making decisions on what is required in the capital. They need Yvette cooper and sadiq khan to over see it, and do it for them.

I don't think anyone has said that.

I think people think that it's very possible that since just a few days before, Swift's tour had what was clearly a very credible and serious terrorist threat (the CIA said that the perpetrators planned to kills tens of thousands and were advanced in that plan), it is unsurprising that the mayor of London and the Home Secretary (who has counter terrorism responsibilities) were involved in those conversations.

The stuff about them pressuring the police is rumour, denied by the government. Maybe it's true, maybe it isn't. But defending Cooper doesn't mean you think the police must be incompetent.

Fullrecoveryispossible · 10/10/2024 15:58

Blimey, I’m a Labour supporter and even I’m embarrassed with the greed of our MPs so early into our leadership.
There is no other reason why Ed would be given the tickets instead of his wife, other than to avoid the need for transparency over this gift.
For me, it’s this, in combination with all the other freebies of a so-called for-the-people leadership that I’m ashamed of.

PandoraSox · 10/10/2024 15:59

Theonewhogotaway · 10/10/2024 15:53

What a well thought out and reasoned reply.

AutumnCrow · 10/10/2024 16:01

OnlyWhenILaugh · 10/10/2024 13:32

Khan both applied pressure on the Met to grant Ms Swift the level of security normally reserved for the King on State business. The sort of security which has been previously denied to Prince Harry. The police are supposed to be independent

If you're going to try and make a political point, it's important to demonstrate you understand what what you are talking about @Icanthinkformyselfthanks .

You have completely misunderstood the legal issues

Prince Harry has never been denied protection. He has been denied IPP status which King Charles (and other Heads of State etc.) have. 🙄

Edited

Quite, @OnlyWhenILaugh. The OP has repeatedly mentioned 'Prince Harry' being denied security, which is an absurd position to take. RAVEC review his security continuously and supply it on a case-by-case basis via the Met accordingly. That's why RAVEC asks for advance notice of visits from him.

The Met also supply security for major performers like Taylor Swift on a case-by-case basis, on the basis of risk to life (re: performer, entourage and many thousands of young fans) and infrasructure.

As for politicians supplying pressure on the Met - what a crock. If anything happened to Swift in London, after the credible threats against her in Vienna, it could result in a horrific atrocity and would mean a major diplomatic incident; and irrespective of the independence of the police, the buck would stop with the politicians. Damn right they asked to be given assurances by the Met over the security situation. That's literally their political responsibility.

pointythings · 10/10/2024 16:02

Let's imagine that the Met had not been encouraged to enhance security for the concert. Let's imagine there had been an attack, with Taylor Swift getting injured or killed along with a lot of fans. Massive damage to human life, the reputation of the UK and the income generated by concerts like this one, with huge economic fallout.

Who would be having a go at Yvette Cooper and Sadiq Khan for failing in their duty of care? Yep, that's right - OP and all the Labour bashers of Mumsnet.

This is the most pathetic effort yet.

Sesma · 10/10/2024 16:04

I'm more surprised that so many of them are wanting to see Taylor Swift anyway, the whole thing is bizarre

Normallynumb · 10/10/2024 16:04

So bloody what!
Taylor brought millions to our economy and was the subject of a terror threat in Vienna.
I'm glad this was agreed so she wasn't forced to cancel
Honestly the lengths people are going to recently to pick holes in everything is ridiculous.

PandoraSox · 10/10/2024 16:06

The Met is accountable to the Mayor of London and the Home Secretary.

The Home Secretary also has a specific role regarding the functions of the Met that go beyond policing London – for example, counter-terrorism policing and the national policing functions that the Met carries out.
