Has Biden just lost the election?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/10/2020 09:22

I've just watched the news and seen Biden forget Trumps name. Not just a quick slip of the tongue and corrected, but calling him George and not knowing how to correct himself.

I absolutely don't blame him - I often struggle to remember something, or call ds1 by ds2s name. We all do it. And Biden is presumably very tired in the run up to next week.

But Trump is of course making huge capital out of this and I'm worried that voters who are wavering will swing back to Trump.

Please tell me I'm wrong!

I think the democrats did the wrong thing in putting such an elderly man forward. It's not a job for an old man I'm afraid.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 27/10/2020 09:25

Could he style it out and tweet about running against George Cofveve?

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 27/10/2020 09:25

This is an election where neither candidate should be president

WanderingMilly · 27/10/2020 09:26

Many people are voting Biden to get rid of Trump. I have seen interviews on Sky News where citizens are saying, Biden isn't the best candidate but anything to get rid of Trump. If that's the case, I doubt Biden has just lost.....

converseandjeans · 27/10/2020 09:27

Biden is 78 in a few weeks. I think someone younger would be better to oppose Trump. Surely by 78 it's time to start winding down?

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 27/10/2020 09:27

I'm still hopeful that they will settle for Biden.

The alternative is something I don't even want to contemplate.

I hope you're right.

I struggle to understand how the Democrats couldn't find a better candidate than Biden.

It's not a job for an old man I'm afraid.

Trump is 74, Biden is 77. Is there a particular cut off when someone becomes an old man?

BrokenBrit · 27/10/2020 09:29

I think a lot of people forget he has a stutter, that he has worked very hard to overcome.
As a fellow stutterer I can tell you that I still get words mixed up more frequently than the average person. I would guess it’s more
related to that rather than senility or whatever the republicans are trying to spin it as.

I should hope after all the absolute racism, nonsense and offensive language that Trump has come out with a word slip from Biden is the least of anyone’s worries.

I think if Biden loses it will be more to do with the fact that Trumps campaign has completely wrongly spun him as a far left socialist lunatic... if anything he is in fact very centrist!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/10/2020 09:29

If I were American I'd vote for anybody who wasn't Trump. In the case of Biden, I'd have major reservations, but from what I know of Kamala Harris I'd be happier with her as president than Biden, and I would have confidence that he would hand over to her if his doctors advised he was no longer up to the job.

Unfortunately, the US seems to be a deeply racist country and there are a lot of sexists out there too (female as well as male) - I felt that was a big factor in why Hillary Clinton lost. There may be a lot of voters actively choosing not to vote for Biden for fear of ending up with another Black president or with their first female president - a Black female president being their worst nightmare.

I haven't seen that clip, but undoubtedly it won't help Biden's campaign. We just have to hope that a lot of the huge number of votes already cast were going his way.

The thought of a person as morally bankrupt as Trump being re-elected sickens me to my stomach.

unmarkedbythat · 27/10/2020 09:29

If anyone seriously votes for Trump or just doesn't vote because Biden forgot his opponent's name one time, they were just desperately seeking an excuse not to vote for Biden in the first place.

AlexaShutUp · 27/10/2020 09:30

Totally agree that he wasn't the right choice. This slip is a real own goal for the democrats. I understand that there has been a lot of early voting, though, so maybe it won't have such a big impact?

ChaChaCha2012 · 27/10/2020 09:30

Biden has a stutter, so if he makes a mistake, it is difficult to get back on track immediately. He does so well to manage it that normally we don't notice it.

Trump is making fun of somebody's disability. It's not the first time he has done so. If you think this is OK, you'd already be a Trump supporter. I can't see this changing the minds of many undecideds.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/10/2020 09:34

I'd completely forgotten about Biden's stutter. That explains the difficulty he had in not being able to correct himself.

Hopefully the American public will recognise that.

They are both old men.
mayflowerapplepie · 27/10/2020 09:38

I think Biden will take a lot of advice from others. He knows he is just a stable, safe ish caretaker for 4 years after the trauma of the last 4
Considering what trump has done, I am not sure that the negatives of Biden could ever outweigh that

dreamingbohemian · 27/10/2020 09:41

No I don't think it will matter. There are not many true undecideds left at this point. Most people voting for Biden are mostly voting against Trump, we all know Biden is old and Kamala will probably take over sometime during his term. So what! Anything to get that monster out.

Biden is the candidate because he got the most votes in an incredibly gruelling process. He was not picked by the party or a small number of members, millions of people voted for him, over quite a lot of much younger candidates. He was seen as the safest choice. And I think ultimately it will work, he is bland enough that you see an incredible coalition uniting behind him to get Trump out.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/10/2020 09:41

I agree @Mayflowerapplepie but I'm.worried about the floating voters.

My PiL live in rural Pennsylvania. Its supposedly a swing state but my MiL says she doesnt know anyone who is voting for Biden apart from her.

blueangel19 · 27/10/2020 09:42

You are not wrong if I were voting and see that video. That would be it for me. Tbh I was sad when I saw it. It is a disgrace that people think Biden is fit to be the US president. The democrats can only blame themselves if Trump gets re-elected.

Quartz2208 · 27/10/2020 09:43

I think the Democratics made a tactical move (to be seen if it is the right one) to pitch Trump against a fellow older white man. To get those inbetween voters who didnt vote for Hillary last time.

He wont get a second time - not even sure he will complete the first if he gets in.

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 27/10/2020 09:44

Much like the UK’s last general election.

dreamingbohemian · 27/10/2020 09:47

Pennsylvania is swingy because it's really two states in one, the urban areas are lefty and diverse, and rural Pennsylvania is extremely conservative and white. I would never expect Biden to do well in rural Pennsylvania but that doesn't mean he will lose the state.

Friendsoftheearth · 27/10/2020 09:47

My heart sank on seeing that too.

He is 77 and very frail, he has what I believe to be early onset dementia. He is not able to talk without an auto cue, and still can not remember what the name of the current president is. This is extremely damaging and alarming. He is sadly unfit for office.

I am not sure what the democrats were thinking to allow him to run in the first place. Biden is a charming, elegant man with a good moral compass, but he is much too old and not able to keep up with even the election much less the job of running the country.

Anyone watching his mistake, and seemingly not even aware of his mistake will be thinking twice about voting for him, no matter how committed they are to removing Trump.

SunbathingDragon · 27/10/2020 09:49

I don’t think Biden is a strong candidate but hopefully it’s enough to beat Trump. I forget people’s names at times and am roughly half Biden’s age so I can see past that but I agree it doesn’t look good.

Wnikat · 27/10/2020 09:49

The guy interviewing him is called George so it’s not that weird a mistake
