Clearing the cobwebs to make everything sparkle - Flylady style

Welcome to this long running thread, we may seem clicky, but all are welcome to join in!

Do NOT sign up for the Flylady emails - it's an excessive amount sent every day.
There is an app that you can customise to suit your schedule and home that I highly recommend.

There are Baby Steps for starting out, add one thing at a time to start good habits and routines.
There are 5 zones that we will rotate through, don't worry about finishing it all this month, it'll come around again next month! Flylady is NOT about perfectionism!

Daily missions: each day of the week has a different mission.

  • Monday: Home Blessing (or as we call it, home bleugh)
  • Tuesday: plan & play
  • Wednesday: anti-procrastination
  • Thursday: errand day
  • Friday: clean car & purse out a week. It's also date night (with your significant other, or friends, or yourself!)
  • Saturday: family fun day
  • Sunday: renew your spirit

Common acronyms we use:

  • LOL: load of laundry (washing is certainly NOT funny!)
  • DW: dishwasher, we are not rotating wives by any means, although an extra pair of hands could come in handy sometimes 😆
  • LMS: lose/lost my shit
  • DNLMS: did not lose my shit

I'm sure there's more, feel free to ask us to explain something. I'll try to update links every day, although if you can, it's worth downloading the app, you can even have it send you notification.

Links are below 👇 if I happen to not add links in time, they do update at midnight for you.

pompoms I hope things got better for you after your row 💐 I also enjoy drinking a glass of wine while cooking dinner 🍷

Ditzy shopping went well, only a couple of extras put into the cart by DH 😆. Well done on keeping up with the routines

Elf I'm also doing low carb, I just love eating that way, definitely do not need the carbs, other than lovely vegetables!
For Thanksgiving we're going to ILs. I'm cooking a few things; ham, rolls, yams, veggies roasted with bacon (butternut squash, onion, Brussels sprouts & cabbage),a pumpkin pie & my own recipe: creamy butter pecan pie (low carb).

We're also going to have another Thanksgiving dinner with DD & her BF, I'll be smoking a turkey as well that day! But I will have DD help me also.

We're also getting flooring replaced this week, so that'll be interesting. We have planned that we will need to eat out at least one night for dinner.

I worked my 2nd job today, although it may have been so long I'm actually no longer employed - even though my log in worked and I could ring up purchases. I couldn't actually clock in! Hopefully that will get resolved soon, I didn't want to work for nothing, I need to get paid!
After work and shipping we watched the 6th Harry Potter movie. Just 2 more to go..

New week means new zone. We are moving into zone 4, the master bedroom.
Monday's mission is to spend 15 minutes under your bed. Clear out anything that doesn't belong. Try and get the vacuum or broom under there to banish the dust bunnies.
Monday is also the day for home bleugh (home blessing), an hour to vacuum, empty bins, change bedding.

Hello everyone, hope you all had a good weekend. I fell off posting a bit towards the end of last week, was plodding on with it all though. Haven’t caught up with the thread yet so apologies if I’ve missed anything.

Im so pleased the zone is the master bedroom this week as mine is a disaster. My wardrobe is an utter mess and so is my bedside drawer. My wardrobe is a big double one which is great, but does also mean it serves too many purposes. As well as my clothes it contains my jewellery, my perfumes, the medicine box, a box of emergency gifts and party bag fillers, some birthday cards, wrapping paper, scissors and tape, some Christmas presents, the Christmas chocolates, a box of spare toiletries, my yoga kit, a box of household bits (command hooks, curtain hooks, drawer dividers, photo frames…). Just far too much stuff. Needs at the least a good tidy if not a good clear out.

Oh and also we dry the laundry in our room in winter as it gets the most sun but it means I’m forever moving airers out of the way to get to the wardrobe which is one reason stuff just gets dumped. Dd1’s room also gets a lot of sun (if she ever opens the blind) so when she goes to uni next year I have big plans to turn her room into the laundry drying room! (Obviously keeping it available for her when she comes back too)

Right, on to it…

CreationNat1on · 20/11/2023 10:18

Of course @CreationNat1on all is welcome! 👋 just jump in where we are this week, the master bedroom, as you are never behind with flylady!

character that's a lot of different uses for one space! I can see why you are planning to turn your DDs room into a drying room

ta da
run errands in 4 different towns for a total of 100miles round trip Hmm

post the letter that should have been posted weeks ago
re-jig schedules for the 4th time for this week.
Screw up the new meds routine because it is not habit yet.
feed people tea.

I am going to ignore the huge amount that needs to be done right not and try to finish the life admin. I might consider the kitchen afterwards. If i have energy.

DomesticElf · 20/11/2023 21:41

Hazel yum that menu sounds lovely 🤤 how long does it take to smoke a turkey?
Hills that's a one looong day
Creation hi 👋
Character I feel you re airers. I hate mine with passion, the look of wet laundry, how long it takes to dry, the extra labour.. the whole lot. We are moving house in two weeks, so I will have a dryer and a utility room again. Bliss!

Ta das:
☕Bins out, then antibac bins
☕Kitchen cleaned, including degreasing oven door, properly cleaning the back splash and the extractor fan.
☕Usual DW rotation.
☕Dusted everything. I tried that Flash dust magnet duster thingy for the first time (it was on sale and I am a sucker for impulse buying cleaning products). I love it! It actually traps the dust, rather than just moving it around like feather duster does.
☕Antibac-ed surfaces in bedroom, including light switches and door knobs.
☕Lol X1, then out to dry
☕Folded and put away a small mountain of clean laundry.
☕Hoovered everything, including gazillion of stairs.
☕Mopped floors
☕Bleached both bathrooms and all bathroom paraphernalia like potties and a baby bath.

I am tired, but al least the house is back to looking presentable.
I need to finish decluttering clothes this week.

DitzyDaffodils · 21/11/2023 01:35

Hope you get paid Hazel

Flash duster sounds interesting Elf I'll have to check that out

Hope you managed to finish the admin Hills I hate admin and procrastinate it terribly

I agree airers are a PITA Character

Welcome Nation hope day one went well for you. The system can seem a bit confusing but you'll soon pick it up. Ask if you've any questions

Fourecks · 21/11/2023 01:44

I've just started Flylady and am curious about the instruction to dress to 'lace-up shoes'. It seems oddly specific.

Froggiehop23 · 21/11/2023 02:30

👋🏻 saying hi, as new to this thread!
Looking forward to having some structure and focus for sorting my home after having had my second baby. 🩵

HungryHazelEyes · 21/11/2023 04:16

@Fourecks 👋 "dress to shoes" is a little controversial. We all have our own version of what that means. She literally means get dressed, including lace up shoes, like trainers, to get yourself going for the day. We do not wear shoes in our house, so for me it means I'm dressed & not in my pajamas anymore 😆

Welcome @Froggiehop23 👋 I hope flylady helps. Congratulations on your new baby 😍

Ditzy I should get paid. My manager is looking until it. DH got a text meant for me 🤔 from that employer with a link to an exit interview 😱
Yet my manager didn't get any notification whatsoever! She's not happy.
It looks like you had a productive day.

Elf honestly I don't know how long it will take, it will depend on the size, but I do know it will take a few hours. I'll have to do more research. I know it has to sit in brine overnight though.
2 weeks till you move 🥳 eeek, how exciting!

character well done for sorting out your wardrobe

hills are you feeling any better?

Ta Das:
🦃 work all day, including some scanning done for my boss, there's a lot more to do tomorrow, it's a slow week
🦃 handwashed dishes
🦃 put out a hotspot in the living room, mainly paperwork
🦃 put a new comforter/ blanket on the bed, I'm excited to try it out tonight
🦃 bought 2 expensive gifts tonight from Amazon, one for DH, one for DS as they went on sale for black Friday
🦃 got my lunch ready for tomorrow since I'll be working (so I don't have to use vacation time for Friday)

I'm currently relaxing on the couch, waiting for my turn in the shower before bed.
I'll get my clothes out ready for the morning as well. I'm going to miss my day off this week, but with things happening at the house I have to say I'm glad I won't be home!

OP posts:
HungryHazelEyes · 21/11/2023 04:29

Tuesday is plan & play day.
Tuesday's mission is to attack the clothes pile. You know what I'm talking about, the chair, the dresser, the exercise bike. Clear the surface, put clean clothes away, put the dirty ones out for wash. If you don't love something, get rid of it, donate it, pass it on to someone else (just make sure it's clean first!). Only spend 15 minutes doing this.

Getting there. We found the missing piece for finding out why my chronic illnesses are flaring really badly and have adjusted the meds/suppliment routine. Which is helping to down regulate the pain so I don't have to take pain killers. I got antibiotics for a nasty sinus infection that was manefesting as earache so feeling better from that. No longer being chronically exposed to black mold spores so that is helping. Now if I could learn to sleep and sort my sleep schedule out ... I'd be dangerous with the amount of energy I had. not really but I might get done in a day half of what I need to get done

Today is horrific with back to back meetings, with quick turnabouts between locality of meetings. So there will be no flying.

@Fourecks if you get into the detail (no idea if still on the new website my antivirus software will no longer let me access the website) she did say the point was that you are dressed with hair and whatever makeup you would were should you be expecting guests/leaving the house. So that if anything comes up unexpectedly you are ready for it. Personally I find the shoes a misnoma. But i guess she had to give the baby step a name. And Americans are often shoes on in the house culturally so that makes more sense. We are a no shoes indoors household WHEN I do this it is everything but. It helps me to make the time to do things like put on makeup/fancy ass hair. Which normally I am too lazy to be arsed with but feel better when I do.

Right I better fly. I need to be seated ready for the first meeting by 9am and have prepped tea before that, because i am not here to cook and no time later. My poor brain is going to be fried by the end of the day.

TheMainCharacter · 21/11/2023 13:31

That sounds promising @HillsBesideTheSea. hope your day goes ok.

Dones so far

DitzyDaffodils · 21/11/2023 19:30

Exit interview Hazel? I guess they've had to wipe you from the system and reinstate you. Totally incompetent to send it to DH phone not yours and not to keep your manager in the loop. A text like that could cause some people distress, not to mention the lack of confidentiality by sending it to the wrong number

Fourecks I don't do it either being a no-shoes household. But, I'm happy to slip outdoor shoes on and off as and when. It doesn't bother me at all or stop me from going outside several times in 5min. Digging into one of the archive articles a while ago, I discovered Flylady's shoe theory is to help those who find themselves not taking out the trash or running their errands and procrastinating instead, because they find it hassle to keep changing slippers/shoes for going outside. That's why she's specifying sensible shoes you can do most things in, as opposed to fancy but uncomfortable shoes you won't want to put on or slippers you won't want to go outside in. She insists everyone do it because some people will lack awareness of their own procrastinating habits so it's no use expecting people to police themselves. A lot of people aren't not wearing outdoor shoes indoors because they're a no-shoes household but because slippers are more comfortable or because they CBA to go find their shoes. All I can suggest is you try it FlyLady style and see if that works better for you than what you were previously doing. She can seem a bit bossy but that's really all she wants, in the hope it will make your life easier

Welcome to the thread Froggie. FlyLady is perfect for adding order to chaos

@DomesticElf that's incredible weight loss well done! It's fantastic and I bet you feel great. I've been enjoying listening to podcasts on Spotify about it all. This one is great open.spotify.com/episode/2ZdOl4cO0F2fsPjssJagbj?si=BxwzbX4-Qqe28ZPinEEvnw

cosypompoms · 21/11/2023 20:53

Hi to everyone new. I did post everyday but I've fallen out of the habit recently and today was my whole house clean up day but I fell top to bottom down the stairs at 9am so I knocked the housework on the head. I even watched bake off on the sofa all afternoon. I'm absolutely fine but my bum and tail is agony.

I've got a big playgroup event in two weeks so I planned and packed a bit for that. Lots of tuff trays and craft stuff.

HouseorHome · 22/11/2023 12:10

Day off again for me today. Unfortunately, I haven't been keeping up with the basics and I have several hours of work to do so there will be no zone work going on today.

I will be happy if I can get the tidying/dishes/laundry/basic swishing and swiping done. Plan is to alternate between housework and work work today. Haven't done much other than take the dog to the vets for a routine vaccination so far...argh!

HouseorHome · 22/11/2023 14:02

Ta da (round 1):
Emptied DW, Reloaded and set off
Hand washed some bigger dishes
Washed throw from sofa
Stripped bed and put in wash
Tidied bedroom
Tided kitchen/dining room
25 mins work

Bornlazy · 22/11/2023 16:44

Pompoms hope you are ok, that sounds scary.

I have been unwell with a flu like bug so haven't been keeping on top of much more than the basics. I've ordered a few Christmas presents and sorted a few admin tasks I'd been putting off but that's about it. Hopefully I'll be back on track soon 🤞

TheMainCharacter · 22/11/2023 16:53

I’ve been a little bit lazy today. Often happens as Monday and Tuesday are relatively busy so then I take Wednesday as more of a rest day.

This morning I achieved:
morning routine
lol x 2
school run
supermarket for bread etc
vacuum hall and stairs
vacuum through downstairs
clean shower room
buy last bits for dc stockings and hide
clean dryer filter
dinner into slow cooker
Then sat on the sofa reading my book for 1.5 hours before picking up a parcel and doing the school run 😃

HungryHazelEyes · 22/11/2023 19:41

Sorry for lack of links for today, last night was crazy with moving rooms around and building the wardrobe in the master bedroom! It ended up being a late night and I fell asleep as soon I got in bed! I should be able to post links tonight ready for tomorrow though.

pompoms I hope you are okay! That must have been scary to fall all the way down 😱💐

Ditzy thankfully DH & I don't keep secrets, but I can see your point of it being unnerving that it got sent to the wrong number.

Sorry for lack of other personals, I'll try to do better tonight when I'm home from work
