What would you think if you walked into someone’s house and saw this?

Wait for the pics to load.
saw these on Reddit. Thinking of doing something similar but not sure if I’ll look mad!

Horrendous- drug den

user1476613140 · 09/05/2025 06:55

Too dark.

MadamePeriwinkle · 09/05/2025 06:55

I think it's pretty cool, but I have a similarly tiny/boring hallway and mine is decked out with colour changing led strip and mirror ball light shades so...🤷🏼‍♀️😁

ColinOfficeTrolley · 09/05/2025 07:04

It's giving me sex dungeon vibes

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 09/05/2025 07:06

The house that taste forgot.

A fire hazard.

An unnecessary drain on resources.

Sorry, but you did ask!

MaySea · 09/05/2025 07:10

I'd think you are an aging stoner

AthWat · 09/05/2025 07:27

UName38 · 08/05/2025 20:41

Not my taste - I’m not keen on the fluorescent colours). Will the rest of the house be like that? If some “normal” light rooms for people like me go for it.

When are you planning on going?

Gremlins101 · 09/05/2025 07:37

Go for it! It's fun, and who cares whether other people like it if you do

Alwayswonderedwhy · 09/05/2025 07:38

Honestly? I'd think it was a waste of time in a hallway. They take ages to heat up and too dark. Plus hall lights tend to be on very briefly unless you leave yours on?
Maybe a couple in a living room would work better.

pastaandpesto · 09/05/2025 08:07

I would think

A) that you don't have the same taste as me
B) that it is awesome that you've done something that clearly brings you joy, and that you are probably quite a joyful person in general

RawBloomers · 09/05/2025 08:08

I do get the whole brothel vibes thing, but like it all the same. I would love a friend who I visited frequently to have this, but wouldn’t do it myself, I need brighter light most of the time!

Sofasloth · 08/05/2025 20:21

Have you owned a lava lamp? They get VERY hot. You'd end up burning your face on one, reeling from that into the next one, burning your face on that one and so on down then corridor.

I can picture that so clearly, but also as a Simpsons episode 🤣

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/05/2025 08:14

I think they look cute but I'd never have them myself. My eyesight isn't great and I need airport levels of lighting in public rooms so that I can see. But the light these throw would be great for when you invite the MIL round of an evening - the dirt down the walls and the bits on the carpet won't show.

mumda · 09/05/2025 08:41

I would assume you were never moving ng anything big through the hall again.

ShowOfHands · 08/05/2025 20:40

I bloody love a lava lamp but it's a bit 'Madam June will see you in the back bedroom now'.

This was my thinking 🤣

TeeBee · 09/05/2025 08:49

I’d think it was styled by a student.

EndlesslyDecluttering · 09/05/2025 08:52

The plug thing is a good point, they look quite creative on the mathmos website but the plugs and sockets aren’t showing. You’d need a socket below each one and then have to turn them all on and off one at a time. You’d need normal lights for those times when you come in and need instant full light to see to lock the front door, put your shoes away, whatever and also for cleaning, looking in the mirror. If I did this I suspect I’d use them for about a month and then leave them gathering dust.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 09/05/2025 05:04

I love a lava lamp - but I believe these are plug in rather than mains wired... Have a look at the Mathmos website - I wouldn't fancy the wires running down the walls below them.

Ah these are actually the same ones I believe! In one of the pictures, you can see the mathmos logo.

For everyone asking, I do actually already own a Mathmos lava lamp. Excellent quality and doesn’t get too hot. I can always touch it even if it’s been on for a good few hours.

These comments are sticking out to me more than the sex dungeon comments 😂 because it’s just very ‘me’ and it would make me happy.

I think the people I invite over also have the added context of they actually do know me, and I’m very much not a sex person or a stoner, quite the opposite actually. Just a pretty normal person who really likes lava lamps and somewhat unusual interior design.

The rest of my house is quite normal-ish, we have some bright colours in all rooms but nothing else student-y or remotely sexy☺️

Im really enjoying the honest opinions though.

I’d think there might be students living there

American students, specifically.

juicylipbalm · 09/05/2025 09:32

And also, I do have a big dimmable ceiling light in the hallway which I would leave there. I think the house in the pictures has coloured spotlights too

haven't read a single response.... What I would think is...

It's kind of pretty

Someone likes pink & a dimly lit hallway. Hides the dirt on the floor.

If it was more purple I'd find it soothing but red is invigorating. LIke having caffeine in an alcoholic drink. Sort of ruins both effects. Maybe the decorator works shifts and the low light helps them sleep better.

My main objection would have been heat but that would be based on 30 year old experience of lava lamps. If that's not a problem any more, then just do whatever you like. If after a while you don't like it, it's not like it's hard to change.

penelopemoneypenny · 09/05/2025 09:38

It’s mad and I love it
