Wait for the pics to load.
saw these on Reddit. Thinking of doing something similar but not sure if I’ll look mad!

Just not practical. Have you had a lava lamp?

  • they are heavy
  • the base is separate to the jar which is separate to the top so they would be very unstable like that.
  • they take hours to properly get going.
  • the emit practically no useful light.
  • they can be a bit smelly.
  • they get HOT! Like proper burn hot.

You could probably find wall lamps that look like it.

Mine is in three sections that lift apart but about 10 years ago I bought a child safe one for my DC that is held together by a screw and is shatterproof and cooler. I just looked at the wall mounted ones and they are that type and secured together in the same way. All Mathmos (the original) brand.

I thought it looked like a brothel.

Shopassistant · 08/05/2025 23:17

I’d think… Ooooof, migraines! 🤷‍♀️

Your house should be your happy place. This idea obviously makes you really excited, so go for it! Easy enough to switch out for “normal”
lights (maybe with those colour change bulbs) if you want to later.

Would I want it in my home? No. Would I think you were bonkers if I saw it in your home - yes, maybe a bit… But I’d also think you were confident, fun and a bit out of the box. I definitely think I’d have more fun at your house than at an ever-so-tasteful all-beige playing it safe Pinterest box.

Changeissmall · 09/05/2025 03:15

Hallway is an odd place to put them (I think that’s a hallway). The lights in the corridors just get clicked on and off quickly and you wouldn’t be hanging around staring at the fun blobbiness - even if you kept them on for long enough to heat up.

Maybe a couple wall mounted in a dining room would work

ZepherinDrouhin · 09/05/2025 03:24

It gives brothel vibes which I suspect isn't the look you're going for.

MermaidMummy06 · 09/05/2025 04:08

Hmmm. My first thought was brothel or house of horrors or imagine trying to find my towels in the linen closet in that low light.

Practically, it takes time for lava lamps to heat up & our hallway lights are on then off. Electricity is too expensive here.

I would just think 'how odd', though, and nothing more. It's not offensive & easy to change out. It's the structural modifications that completely change a house that make me concerned! I saw a heritage house in a heritage area, on tv last week, they'd put a Spanish patio on the front!

FairPlayer274 · 09/05/2025 04:09

Oh I love that! But I’m somewhat of an eccentric decorator myself 😂

Cognacsoft · 09/05/2025 04:17

Well you can’t leave the lamp on for more than 4 to 6 hours and then you’re supposed to let it cool for 30 minutes before turning on again.
Not really a practical hall light.
If you decide to go ahead then you should probably check your house insurance policy first.

DreamTheMoors · 09/05/2025 04:36

I would think your mum finally let you make a choice.
And you are under 12.
And a boy.

Kindly meant , Star Trek meets Brothel...sorry not my taste at all. Is it to lighten a narrow space like the first photo?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 09/05/2025 05:04

I love a lava lamp - but I believe these are plug in rather than mains wired... Have a look at the Mathmos website - I wouldn't fancy the wires running down the walls below them.

What of you need to see something? I would think you were batty as a fruit cake if I saw this in real life.

Tbrh · 09/05/2025 05:10

Very cool!

Feelingmuchbetter · 09/05/2025 05:25

I am thinking lady of the night, student flat or a rave involving lots of illegal drugs. If that is the vibe you are seeking, go for it! I wouldn’t actually let my children stay there unsupervised for any amount of time alone though...

Feelingmuchbetter · 09/05/2025 05:27

Red light Amsterdam vibes

MyDeftDuck · 09/05/2025 06:12

Not to my taste but ‘horses for courses’. I just hope they are low energy bulbs.

ShowOfHands · 08/05/2025 20:40

I bloody love a lava lamp but it's a bit 'Madam June will see you in the back bedroom now'.

Exactly what I was thinking

Cailin66 · 09/05/2025 06:36

Brothel
sex club
student abode
mystic Meg house
spaced out on weed people

And of course you can’t see a thing so it is dangerous lighting for a hall. Give it 48 hours and you’ll start to hallucinate, in a week you’ll wonder what on earth you were thinking of.

I'd think - I'm back in the 1970s!!

Find geometric wallpaper to accompany the lamps.
White, orange, lime and brown.
